This time they have found that sectarian prayer by &quot;Christians&quot; only in government meetings does not violate the First Amendment ban on establishing a state religion. The four Justices of SCOTUS all opposed them.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SCROTUS.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"SCROTUS\" style=\"display: inline\" alt=\"SCROTUS\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SCROTUS_thumb.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a potentially far-reaching case, the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday ruled that an upstate New York town&#8217;s practice of opening government meetings with sectarian prayers does not violate the constitutional protection that separates church and state.<\/p>\n<p>The court&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/13pdf\/12-696_4f57.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">decision (pdf)<\/a> prompted immediate criticism among civil liberty groups and advocates of religious freedom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe constitutional requirement that church and state must be separated rests, in part, on the understanding that when government supports one religion over others, people who are not members of the favored religion are made to feel like outsiders by their government,&quot; said Arthur Eisenberg, legal director of the New York Civil Liberties Union.<\/p>\n<p>Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United, which sponsored the lawsuit, said, \u201cThe Supreme Court just relegated millions of Americans\u2014both believers and nonbelievers\u2014to second-class citizenship.&quot;\u2026 <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/headline\/2014\/05\/05-1\" target=\"_blank\">Common Dreams<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">For the record, I find nothing offensive about prayer. I do it every day. I do, however, object to anyone&#8217;s sectarian prayers receiving government sanction on any level.
