{"id":12476,"date":"2014-04-01T00:46:25","date_gmt":"2014-04-01T07:46:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=12476"},"modified":"2014-04-01T00:46:25","modified_gmt":"2014-04-01T07:46:25","slug":"good-news-for-whales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2014\/04\/01\/good-news-for-whales\/","title":{"rendered":"Good News for Whales!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Although I am not the impassioned animal advocate that many of my friends are, I have been a long term fan and supporter of the Sea Shepherds and an opponent of brutal Japanese commercial whaling in the Antarctic under the guise if scientific research.&#160; Therefore, I am very happy to share this news.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"0401Whales\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: left; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"0401Whales\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/0401Whales.jpg\" width=\"360\" align=\"left\" height=\"202\" \/>The United Nations\u2019 top court on Monday ordered Japan to end its annual Antarctic whale hunt, saying in a landmark ruling that the programme was a commercial activity disguised as science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJapan shall revoke any existent authorisation, permit or licence granted in relation to JARPA II (research programme) and refrain from granting any further permits,\u201d said the International Court of Justice\u2019s Judge Peter Tomka.<\/p>\n<p>Agreeing with Australia, which in 2010 hauled Japan before the Hague-based ICJ in a bid to end whale hunting in the Southern Ocean, Tomka said that \u201cspecial permissions granted by Japan are not for purposes of scientific research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe evidence does not establish that the programme\u2019s design and implementation are reasonable in relation to its stated (scientific) objectives,\u201d Tomka said.<\/p>\n<p>While Norway and Iceland have commercial whaling programmes in spite of a 1986 International Whaling Commission (IWC) moratorium, Japan insisted its programme was scientific, while admitting that the resulting meat ended up on plates back home.<\/p>\n<p>Tokyo was accused of exploiting a legal loophole in the 1986 ban on commercial whaling that allowed the practice to collect scientific data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conservation groups hailed the ruling, which Japan said it would respect<\/strong> despite \u201cdeep disappointment\u201d\u2026 [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/rs\/2014\/03\/31\/top-united-nations-court-orders-japan-to-end-antarctic-whale-hunt\/\" target=\"_blank\">Raw Story<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">It just makes no sense to slaughter endangered animals far more intelligent that people who vote Republican.<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although I am not the impassioned animal advocate that many of my friends are, I have been a long term fan and supporter of the Sea Shepherds and an opponent of brutal Japanese commercial whaling in the Antarctic under the guise if scientific research.&#160; Therefore, I am very happy to share this news.
