{"id":12170,"date":"2014-02-11T00:44:33","date_gmt":"2014-02-11T08:44:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=12170"},"modified":"2014-02-11T00:44:33","modified_gmt":"2014-02-11T08:44:33","slug":"would-republicans-deny-the-sixth-amendment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2014\/02\/11\/would-republicans-deny-the-sixth-amendment\/","title":{"rendered":"Would Republicans deny the Sixth Amendment?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">When Republican here, Gary Zimmerman was on trial for murdering Trayvon Martin, Republicans were quick to point out how Zimmerman had the right to an aggressive defense, as they promised support for his appeals, if Zimmerman had been justly convicted.&#160; Although I remain firm in my opinion that Zimmerman is guilty, I certainly agree that he has a right to representation, because it is guaranteed in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/constitution\/sixth_amendment\" target=\"_blank\">Sixth Amendment<\/a>.&#160; It appears that Republicans and I agree, but we do not.&#160; I believe the right is absolute.&#160; Republicans believe it is conditional.&#160; Consider this:<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"0211Adegbile\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: left; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"0211Adegbile\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/0211Adegbile.jpg\" width=\"360\" align=\"left\" height=\"441\" \/>Senate Republicans are vowing to continue their vocal opposition to President Obama\u2019s nomination of Debo Adegbile to head the Department of Justice\u2019s Civil Rights Division, expressing outrage over the fact that he once served as a legal representative for an internationally known convicted cop-killer.<\/p>\n<p>Adegbile, 47, spent more than a decade working for the NAACP\u2019s Legal Defense Fund and served as the group\u2019s in-house voting rights expert. In was in that role that <strong>Adegbile contributed to appeals filed on behalf of Mumia Abu-Jamal<\/strong>, who was convicted of the 1981 murder of&#160; Philadelphia police Sgt. Daniel Faulkner.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about his participation in Abu-Jamal&#8217;s appeals during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on his nomination in January, Adegbile <a href=\"http:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/hearings\/hearing.cfm?id=32caee8082f9297f0e7df6280b1e343b\" target=\"_blank\">insisted<\/a> that, despite Abu-Jamal&#8217;s conviction, he deserved legal representation during his appeals\u2026 [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/post-politics\/wp\/2014\/02\/10\/republicans-vow-continued-opposition-to-obamas-civil-rights-nominee\/\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Post<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">What hypocrisy!&#160; Whatever you believe about Mumia\u2019s conviction, he has a right to representation.&#160; Providing that representation was Adegbile\u2019s job.&#160; From this, the answer is clear.
