To people who are flat on their back, unemployed or disabled and in need of help, they do not care if the help comes from the private sector or the government \u2014 they just want help.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Republicans in Congress <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/12\/29\/opinion\/sunday\/no-cheer-for-the-jobless.html?ref=us\" target=\"_blank\">rejected<\/a> an extension of unemployment benefits, which will not only hurt approximately 1.3 million Americans <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/11\/30\/business\/economy\/for-long-term-jobless-a-stubborn-trend.html\" target=\"_blank\">during a period when long-term joblessness is still high<\/a>, but will also result in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2013\/dec\/23\/us-unemployment-benefits-expiration-economy\">serious harm to economic growth<\/a>. If Republicans do not waver from their position, up to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/cms\/index.cfm?fa=view&amp;id=4060\" target=\"_blank\">5 million people<\/a> could be affected by the cuts. The party also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2013\/09\/19\/house-gop-food-stamp-cuts\/2839343\/\" target=\"_blank\">passed enormous cuts<\/a> to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/cms\/?fa=view&amp;id=3239\" target=\"_blank\">food stamp program<\/a> under the auspices of preventing the <a href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/blog\/2013\/08\/19\/fox-misleadingly-hypes-13-percent-fraud-in-food\/195462\" target=\"_blank\">tremendously low rate of fraud<\/a> in an effort to kick <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2013\/07\/31\/2390101\/5-million-kicked-off-food-stamps\/\" target=\"_blank\">5 million people<\/a> off of food assistance.<\/p>\n<p>But the GOP continues to give special benefits to millionaires, as earlier this year Republicans <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/rs\/2013\/02\/15\/buffett-rule-included-in-senate-democrats-plan-to-avert-looming-sequester\/\" target=\"_blank\">once again rebuffed<\/a> the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/issues\/tax-reform\/news\/2012\/04\/13\/11431\/what-the-buffett-rule-will-and-wont-do\/\" target=\"_blank\">Buffet Rule<\/a>,\u201d which would have ensured that millionaires don\u2019t end up having a lower tax rate than average Americans.<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">This is just one of five ways that, according to the author, the Republican Party got even worse in 2013.
