{"id":11601,"date":"2013-11-06T01:08:55","date_gmt":"2013-11-06T09:08:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=11601"},"modified":"2013-11-06T01:08:55","modified_gmt":"2013-11-06T09:08:55","slug":"labeling-gmos-in-wa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2013\/11\/06\/labeling-gmos-in-wa\/","title":{"rendered":"Labeling GMOs in WA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Washington TEAbuggery has kept the focus away from&#160; several local races and measures that are worthy of note by the nation as a whole.&#160; One is in neighboring Washington State, where I-522 will require labeling on all food containing GMO\u2019s.&#160; I am for it, because we have a right to know what we\u2019re eating.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"1105gmono\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto\" border=\"0\" alt=\"1105gmono\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/1105gmono.jpg\" width=\"540\" height=\"305\" \/>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Washington State\u2019s I-522 would require foods that have been genetically modified, or GMOs, to be labeled as such for retail purposes in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Following legal pressure from anti-GMO campaign groups such as <a href=\"http:\/\/momsforlabeling.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Moms for Labeling<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/yeson522.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yes on 1-522<\/a> and the Washington State Attorney General&#8217;s office, the pro-GMO trade group Grocery Manufacturers Association <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/headline\/2013\/10\/23-4\" target=\"_blank\">was forced to release<\/a> a list of its high rolling donors who have financed the NO on I- 522 drive.<\/p>\n<p>As was expected, <strong>major food corporations and GMO users such as PepsiCo, Nestle USA, The Coca-Cola Co. and General Mills, among many others, had secretly donated millions of dollars to the GMA campaign.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GMA spending made up $7 million of the $17 million dollar No on I-522 push.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A similar initiative in California, Proposition 37, lost on last year&#8217;s ballot due to a similar flood of campaign money from pro-GMO food companies.<\/p>\n<p>The following is the ballot text:<\/p>\n<p>Initiative Measure No. 522 concerns labeling of genetically-engineered foods.<\/p>\n<p>This measure would require most raw agricultural commodities, processed foods, and seeds and seed stocks, if produced using genetic engineering as defined, to be labeled as genetically engineered when offered for retail sale\u2026.
