{"id":11592,"date":"2013-11-05T00:08:48","date_gmt":"2013-11-05T08:08:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=11592"},"modified":"2013-11-05T00:08:48","modified_gmt":"2013-11-05T08:08:48","slug":"merkley-leads-on-enda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2013\/11\/05\/merkley-leads-on-enda\/","title":{"rendered":"Merkley Leads on ENDA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">As the time grows near for the senate vote to break the Republican filibuster against ENDA (Employment Non-Discrimination Act), it appears likely that just enough Republicans will join the Democrats to clear the 60 vote cloture hurdle.&#160; Now that passage in the Senate appears likely, Republicans are trying to water it down.&#160; Fortunately, my Senator, Jeff Merkley is leading the fight to keep ENDA whole.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"1105JEFF-MERKLEY\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: left; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"1105JEFF-MERKLEY\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/1105JEFF-MERKLEY.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"263\" \/>As backers of the Employment Non-Discrimation Act hustle to round up extra support before an expected vote Monday evening, there are murmurs that the bill would be more palatable to Republican senators if it didn&#8217;t include protections for transgender individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), for example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonblade.com\/2013\/10\/30\/enda-heats\/\" target=\"_blank\">stated last week<\/a> that he would <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/10\/29\/bill-nelson-enda_n_4173328.html\" target=\"_blank\">only consider supporting<\/a> a bill that was not fully inclusive.<\/p>\n<p>But Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), the <strong>leader of the effort to pass ENDA<\/strong> in the Senate and the man who introduced the legislation in the current Congress, said that&#8217;s not happening.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I have fought for fully inclusive legislation in Oregon. I knew that fully inclusive legislation had worked very well in the states that had adopted it, and I thought it would just be wrong to leave any particular group behind on this,&quot; he told The Huffington Post in an interview.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ENDA would make it illegal to discriminate against someone on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity<\/strong>.
