{"id":11065,"date":"2013-09-07T01:50:40","date_gmt":"2013-09-07T08:50:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=11065"},"modified":"2013-09-07T01:50:40","modified_gmt":"2013-09-07T08:50:40","slug":"reinventing-st-ronnie-ray-gun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2013\/09\/07\/reinventing-st-ronnie-ray-gun\/","title":{"rendered":"Reinventing St. Ronnie Ray Gun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">When Republicans want support for their travesty de jour, they attribute it to the patron saint of the Republican Party, St. Ronnie Ray Gun.&#160; St Ronnie wore a white hat, rode a white horse, and could do no wrong.&#160; That St. Ronnie may have been or done the exact opposite, matters not, because they have the Republican Reichsministry of Propaganda, <em>Faux Noise<\/em>, to parrot their lies.&#160; Now they are claiming how St. Ronnie would NEVER gave allowed chemical weapons use.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"7rumsfeld-hussein\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: left; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"7rumsfeld-hussein\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/7rumsfeld-hussein.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"225\" \/>A top Republican lawmaker on Thursday invoked Ronald Reagan to say that Obama was weak for not acting more directly in response to Syria\u2019s alleged use of chemical weapons, ignoring the fact that Reagan\u2019s White House looked the other way when chemical weapons were used in the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>Former House Foreign Affairs Committee chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) appeared on Fox News arguing for a military response to the Syrian government\u2019s alleged use of chemical weapons on civilians. While pushing the same limited strikes plan that the <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/security\/2013\/08\/31\/2560331\/obama-military-syria-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\">Obama administration wants<\/a>, Ros-Leithein attacked the president for not moving more forcefully against Damascus. In doing so, she told Fox that <strong>Reagan never would have stood for the sort of attack<\/strong> that killed an <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/security\/2013\/08\/30\/2558151\/intel-syria-chemical-weapons\/\" target=\"_blank\">estimated 1,400 civilians<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;What Ros-Lehtinen seems oddly unaware of, however, is that Ronald Reagan did exactly the opposite. For the majority of the 1980s, Iraq under Sadaam Hussein was locked in combat with the Islamic Republic of Iran in a war that killed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2010\/sep\/23\/iran-iraq-war-anniversary\" target=\"_blank\">more than 1,000,000 people<\/a> on both sides. The United States <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iranchamber.com\/history\/articles\/arming_iraq.php\" target=\"_blank\">explicitly backed<\/a> the secular Hussein over the Ayatollah Khomeini\u2019s government in Tehran, still smarting from the embassy hostage crisis that had only ended when Reagan took office. <strong>That backing not only included the shipment of tons of weapons to support Baghdad, but also looking the other way when Iraq unleashed its chemical weapons stockpiles \u2014 including sarin and mustard gas \u2014 against Iranian civilians and soldiers alike<\/strong>&#8230;
