{"id":10933,"date":"2013-08-23T00:26:17","date_gmt":"2013-08-23T07:26:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=10933"},"modified":"2013-08-23T00:26:17","modified_gmt":"2013-08-23T07:26:17","slug":"crappy-birthday-alec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2013\/08\/23\/crappy-birthday-alec\/","title":{"rendered":"Crappy Birthday ALEC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">I\u2019m sad to report that ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council) is celebrating their 40th birthday.&#160; Every year ALEC survives is a sad year for America, because ALEC is the place Koch suckers go to scheme and draft cookie cutter, plugin legislation to deprive African, Latino, Asian, Gay, Lesbian, Transgender, female, working, senior, studying, poor, middle class, other and especially voting Americans of their Constitutional rights.&#160; The news from their birthday party is most foul.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in; line-height: normal\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"23ALEC\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: left; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"23ALEC\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/23ALEC.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"239\" \/>The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) annual meeting in Chicago earlier this month was marked by massive protests outside, but inside the walls of the Palmer House Hotel, the business of this notoriously secretive organization went forward as usual. The few quotes that have trickled out from inside the ALEC meeting are revealing&#8230;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in; line-height: normal\"><span><font style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><strong>&#8230;Who Needs Voters When We Have Money and the John Birch Society?<\/strong><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in; line-height: normal\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">At a workshop titled &quot;Calling a Convention of the States: The Constitutional Check on the Abuses of Federal Power,&quot; Mark Meckler, founder of the Tea Party Patriots and now head of a group called Citizens for Self Governance &#8212; a top sponsor of the ALEC meeting &#8212; announced the launch of a new project to encourage state legislatures to call an Article V Convention of the States <a href=\"http:\/\/conventionofstates.com\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\">to stop what they call<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font> &quot;the runaway train of the federal government.&quot; One state representative from Arizona reportedly stood up and asked:<\/font><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; unicode-bidi: embed; direction: ltr; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: 0.375in; margin-top: 0in; line-height: normal\" type=\"disc\">\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; vertical-align: middle; margin-top: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: \"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>&quot;How do we utilize the John Birch Society for this effort?&quot; <\/strong><\/font><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in; line-height: normal\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Wisconsin Rep. Chris Taylor, a Democrat who infiltrated the ALEC meeting, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/rs\/2013\/08\/16\/wisconsin-democrat-who-infiltrated-alec-they-dont-want-people-involved-in-the-political-process\/\" target=\"_blank\">recounted a conversation<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font> with a private sector ALEC member who also was advocating a constitutional amendment to rein-in the federal government. He told her:<\/font><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; unicode-bidi: embed; direction: ltr; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: 0.375in; margin-top: 0in; line-height: normal\" type=\"disc\">\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; vertical-align: middle; margin-top: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: \"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201c<\/font><\/span><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-family: \"><strong>You really don\u2019t need people to do this.
