Short Takes

The Guardian – Republicans will defend their Caesar but new revelations show Trump’s true threat
Quote – Those who claim that the events of 6 January were something other than a failed coup attempt would do well to come up with a better line. Or a different alternate reality. Ashli Babbitt is no martyr. Trump will not be restored to the presidency, no matter what the MyPillow guy says. Trump’s machinations and protestations convey the desperation that comes with hovering over the abyss. He knows what he has said and done.
Click through for well-written opinion. Yes, it’s an opinion piece, but there are also many facts here, and I certainly hope his opinions about future events are correct.

Reuters – Kosovo honours late son of U.S. President Biden
Quote – Kosovo declared independence in 2008 with Western backing, but Serbia still refuses to recognise it and considers it part of its territory. “What the United States and the American people have done for our country, for our freedom, for our right to exist, goes beyond any partnership currently witnessed in the world. Mr. President, Kosovo is your home too,” said Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani while presenting the award.

The New Yorker – The Big Money Behind the Big Lie
Quote – Chad Campbell, a Democrat who was the minority leader in the Arizona House of Representatives until 2014, when he left to become a consultant in Phoenix, has been shocked by the state’s anti-democratic turn. For several years, he sat next to Karen Fann when she was a member of the House, and in his view she’s gone from being a traditional Republican lawmaker to being a member of “Trump’s cult of personality.” He said, “I don’t know if she believes it or not, or which would be worse.” Arizona, he added, is in the midst of a “nonviolent overthrow in some ways—it’s subtle, and not in people’s face because it’s not happening with weapons. But it’s still a complete overthrow of democracy. They’re trying to disenfranchise everyone who is not older white guys.”

  1. Republicans will defend their Caesar but new revelations show Trump’s true threat

It’s just hard to understand how they find denying reality so easy.

Kosovo honours late son of U.S. President Biden

    Very thoughtful AND appropriate.

The Big Money Behind the Big Lie

We can thank SCOTUS with their misguided Citizens United ruling to enable one of the scariest issues now facing our democracy.

Money is NOT speech!  Democracy is for PEOPLE!

  2. Cartoon: A wonderful day for him, and America!
The Guardian: Excellent article. TOT has never been a president. He’s greedy, a full blown liar and evil. Justice has always been here, and will promptly stomp on TOT and his sycophants (R’s) when she’s ready. I can’t wait.
Reuters: Such a great tribute to Beau!
    FFT: Why…YES they are!!

You sound busy.  Glad that you are getting your projects in order. Have a great day, and Thank you, Joanne.

This just in: “Giuliani allies are looking at the Trump $ – even if it isn’t $82 million – and are aghast that Trump isn’t helping Giuliani with legal fees. Giuliani’s friends say he is saying he is close to broke, and his interview w/@MelissaRusso4NY makes clear he knows he’s in legal jeopardy.” ~ Maggie Haberman ~
    2. (2 quotes from Mr. Swalwell)
“Answer me this: if @GOP Leader McCarthy thinks anyone but Trump was responsible for January 6, why is Trump the ONLY person McCarthy contacted to call off the attack? McCarthy didn’t call @Speaker Pelosi or Antifa, etc to stop it. He knew then and he knows now.” ~ Rep. Eric Swalwell ~
    3. Kevin McCarthy jokes “it will be hard not to hit” Nancy Pelosi with gavel if he becomes House speaker.” – “It’s been over 24 hours since GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy threatened violence against Nancy Pelosi. RT if he should apologize or resign.” ~ Rep. Eric Swalwell ~

    4. “I probably am representative of most of my democrat colleagues, and even some of the Republican colleagues in that I just can’t take the lying anymore. I don’t want to be part to propaganda and disinformation  and the suppression of truth.” ~ Rep. Jamie Raskin ~

    • TJI #1 – Giuliani’s allies are delusional if they expected him to get as much as a penny from Trump**.
TJI #2 annd 3 – Swallwell makes the obvious even more obvious, which raises the question, why can’t everyne see it?
TJI #4 – I saw a video clip in which he said that, or something close to it to Andy Biggs, I believe it was – the one who said the insurrection looked like normal tourist behavior. What struck me was that Raskin sounded like s genuine human being ans Biggs sounded like a talking Fer-de-Lance – monotone with an undertone of fury, saying the same thing over and over (complaining he was’t being quoted correctly), and talking over Raskin.  Ir was nearly unbearable.

    • TJI#1: Poor rUdy. Hate to tell him that tRump doesn’t give a hoot about him or his financial hardships.
TJI#2: I can’t wait till mCcarthy is under oath and has to answer these questions.
TJI#3: He definitely should be forced to resign!
TJI#4: I hope they get to the bottom of the whole ordeal. That all that were involved are prosecuted.

    • TJI #1: Giuliani has allies?

TJI #2: Personally, I can’t wait for McCarthy will incriminate himself by lying under oath, but like so many have done before him, he’ll plead a case of complete amnesia for what happened that day.

TJI #3: He actually said that, i.e. joked about that, and is still minority leader? Next thing, he’ll get away with murder.

  3. “Toon: Way to go!
    Guardian: Way to go!
    Reuters: So cool!
New Yorker: Next, we will hear of their governor claiming that the ghosts of deceased 1960’s Hippies were seen messing with the ballots!
    FFT: You bet!

  4. TJI#1: “Ain’t that a shame, my tears feel like rain….” NOT!
TJI#2: Oh, that’s because he did not have a phone number for the Antifa central command office!  Apologize?  Resign? GQP people?  HA!
TJI#4: It’s about time someone in congress came out and openly said this kind of thing!

  5. Cartoon: A day to remember. Bravo to Jesse.
The Guardian: Speaks true words of the fake president. A title he should of never held. He’s worthless, done nothing for our country than to destroy it in so many ways.
Reuters: Wonderful and well deserved honor for Beau.
New Yorker: Crazy turn of events.
Food for Thought: Yes they are.
Glad it has been cooler for you so you could finish your sweater.
It’s hotter today, high 90’s but suppose to go down a degree or two tomorrow.
Hope you have a nice rest of your day/evening.
    Take care.  Thanks Joanne

  6. Cartoon: That picture is both memorable and scary. Of course, hindsight is easy but how could people not have seen the sign. This picture really says more than a thousand words.

TG: Well-written opinion indeed; hope-giving too. Have the subpoenas been served yet?

Reuters: It may have meant more to the Bidens if Beau had been honoured before Joe Biden became president. Now it has become too closely entangled with politics and the kiss-ass diplomacy the former guy was so fond of. Trump offered his goodwill up for any gold-covered trinket; Biden doesn’t so I hope he gets to savour the gesture in a more private moment.

TNY: Anecdotal for many states, I should think. Turn the tide before it’s too late!

FFT: The first line of this meme looks very familiar, Joanne 2745 I’m not sure if I’m fully in agreement; remembering “Mein Kampf” on the banned lists for many years after WWII.

    • They had already honored Beau earlier by namig a street after him.  And that makes your point even stronger.  But you may also notice neither he nor Dr Jill was present -just our ambassador.  I think that sends a signal of no funny business.

I do try to keep my promises.  Even with your counterexample, even that should (1) be available for study but (b) not be made more attractive by being forbidden.
