Dec 112018

It’s raining, it’s pouring, the old broad is snoring!  Y-a-w-n!  I just woke up, fed the kids and now it is time to eat some breakfast myself as I work on tomorrow’s OT.  I won’t be posting it until mid afternoon between physio and teaching.  Tomorrow is bound to be noisy as the landscapers will be here with their damn leaf blowers, the garbage collection is tomorrow, and the city recycling pick up is tomorrow.  My unit is right by the garbage and recycling shed so it gets loud.  Even the kids dive under the bed because of all the noise.  Perhaps we’ll hear from TomCat sometime today.

Short Takes

Huffington Post — What will President Donald Trump do when it’s time to leave office?

Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin said she doesn’t believe Trump can pardon himself, and if he tried he could face prosecution after leaving office in connection with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Rather than take a chance, he could make a last-minute move to protect himself if he is replaced by a Democrat after the next election.

“I would predict here on MSNBC that when Trump leaves office he will resign the presidency 10 minutes before Mike Pence leaves office, allowing Pence to pardon him if there is not a Republican president to follow him,” Rubin said on “AM Joy” on Sunday.

Please click through to view a 10 minute video of AM Joy with Jonathan Capeheart as he and his panel explore this question.  (unfortunately I could not imbed) If impeachment is the Democrat strategy, this is one more reason why Pence must be impeached at the same time.

Vox — Americans are more civically engaged than they have been in more than 100 years.

The two years between President Donald Trump’s win in 2016 and the 2018 midterms ushered in a new era of political engagement in America, not seen since the early 1900s and the 1960s civil rights and anti-war movements.

That culminated in November’s midterm elections. While House Democrats picked up 40 seats in a wave election (they didn’t fare nearly as well in the Senate), an important number to focus on is the sheer number of people who voted in 2018, compared to past midterms.

50.1 percent of the voting-eligible population in the US turned out to cast their ballots in this year’s midterms, according to the United States Elections Project, a database about the United States electoral system run by University of Florida political science professor Michael McDonald. In raw numbers, that means 118,044,470 votes were cast.  …

Voter turnout numbers are the easiest way to measure just how politically engaged Americans were in 2018. But all of the work that went into the final result is political engagement — political organizing, phone banking, canvassing, protesting, contacting elected officials, or donating money to a campaign.

Americans also participated in these activities in high numbers in 2018, according to an April survey by Pew Research Center.

Pew found that 67 percent of the people surveyed said they engaged with politics in at least one of these ways since 2013. And 46 percent reported political engagement in some form during the past year.

Click through for the rest of this interesting article.  2018 had the highest turnout rate in 100 years!  What will the Congress look like if the turnout in 2020 is at 70% or higher?  And how do we raise participation rates?  One way of which I have heard is making voting day a national holiday.  Our very own Freya was heavily involved in Georgia for the 2018 mid terms.  She posted the following petition:

Stand with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Make Election Day a National Holiday! which you can also see at Care2.

I am Canadian so I cannot vote in the US but I try to do my part here at PP.  In Canada, there are early voting opportunities and each voter must be accorded 4 consecutive hours to vote by their employer.  As a manager, I sent my staff home 4 hours prior to the polls closing.

YouTubeThis is Part 1 of an ABC (Australian Broadcast Company) programme examining the Trump Russia relationship published in .  Some of this is ‘old hat’ while other parts may be new information.  Sarah Ferguson, the interviewer, talks with various people involved with Trump.  Tomorrow Part 2.

  1. Koala 4:59 [8:06} You do find the sweetie-pies!

The 44 former Senators who wrote the letter to the Washington Post are
Max Baucus (D-Mont.), Evan Bayh (D-Ind.), Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.), Bill Bradley (D-N.J.), Richard Bryan (D-Nev.), Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.), Max Cleland (D-Ga.), William Cohen (R-Maine), Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), Al D’Amato (R-N.Y.), John C. Danforth (R-Mo.), Tom Daschle (D-S.D.), Dennis DeConcini (D-Ariz.), Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.), David Durenberger (R-Minn.), Russ Feingold (D-Wis.), Wyche Fowler (D-Ga.), Bob Graham (D-Fla.), Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.), Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Gary Hart (D-Colo.), Bennett Johnston (D-La.), Bob Kerrey (D-Neb.), John Kerry (D-Mass.), Paul Kirk (D-Mass.), Mary Landrieu (D-La.), Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.), Richard Lugar (R-Ind.), Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), Sam Nunn (D-Ga.), Larry Pressler (R-S.D.), David Pryor (D-Ark.), Don Riegle (D-Mich.), Chuck Robb (D-Va.), Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), Jim Sasser (D-Tenn.), Alan Simpson (R-Wyo.), Mark Udall (D-Colo.), John W. Warner (R-Va.), Lowell Weicker (I-Conn.), Tim Wirth (D-Colo.)

I am proud beyond reason of all of them. But, really, the only currently serving Senator who matters (at least before January) is McConnell, and he’s complicit.

I trust everyone remembers Heather Heyer, who was murdered at Charlottesville.

When you click through and see WHO voted not to hear appeals (and therefore in favor of Planned Parenthood), be sure you are sitting down and don’t have liquid in your mouth.

Huffo – Definitely a possibility, but not a certainty. One factor – and despite it having been extensively discussed, he still may not “get it” – is that a Federal pardon will do nothing about States’ charges.

Vox – In 1914, of course, it was Woodrow Wilson running on a slogan of “He kept us out of war.” The thing that fascinates me about the chart is how closely the percentage of midterm voters follows the percentage of Presidential voters, the exceptions being in the period 1990-2010. That has to mean something but I don’t know quite what.

ABC – Will watch eventually. Later:

    Universe – Excellent advice – unless they don’t have a dog. 12

    • I picked up on that striking similarity between presidential and midterm elections too.  It begs the question “Why?”  Is it a reflection of truly committed voters and so-so voters?  I don’t really know.

Trump is too stupid to get it!

  2.  I was here just long enough to do updates to the site.  The move has been a nightmare.  You may not see me again for a couple days.  Hugs! 26

  3. HP: I hope that dt gets his just desserts, and quickly. He has no business being in the WH, making horrible decisions based on his moods, or lack of understanding/skills in the political arena. Yes, Pence/dt need to go at the same time, as Pence has been complacent towards him. (good riddance too!) when/if it happens!

Vox: Good news!! All the way around for us Dems!! Already had signed petition. WTG, Freya!!

    YT: W/watch later, thx!!

MU: Now that’s the same exact picture I get from my Russian Blue to the dog when I’m questioning both . LOL.

Congratulations to the FF folks!! Thanks, Lynn for posting.

    • Oops!…… *This just in: “Do bone spurs keep you out of jail?? Asking for a friend.” ~ Claudia K. ~

  4. Twitler doing chicanery like resigning minutes before his term ends so Pence can pardon him is not without merit.

Pence agreeing to it?  Only if “Mother” tells him it’s OK.

  5. Rubbish collection here today too, both babies have dived under the nearest piece of furniture!!!

    Thanx Lynn ?

  6. So Americans (US residents) are more civically engaged than they’ve been in a century? That’s one positive thing that the tRump regime has done – encouraged people to get off their asses and not just vote, but bone up on candidates, as well as demonstrate and contact their Government reps. We still need to raise more hell, though – and make sure that we have an even bigger Blue Wave in 2020!

  7. Good luck with all the noise, Lynn. Perhaps some ear-muffins will keep it down a bit.

Thank you, 3:29 (average 8:06). Well, it is familiar to me.
TomCat’s : 5:09 (average 12:14) If three of us are taking less than half of the average, or just a bit more than half, why isn’t the average going down? I just don’t think there are thousands and thousands of people playing (badly).

HP: Why are all these smart people coming up with ways for Drumpf to escape prosecution? Sure, there’s little chance that he will watch MSNBC, but Pence might. But then again Pence is one of those slippery Talibangelists, those who pinch kittens in the dark (Dutch proverb), and might “dislike” Drumpf as much as we do. Imagine him keeping up the appearance of pardon until the very last and then walking out, blowing Drumpf a raspberry.

Vox: Finally some silver lining to the Drumpf era. Kudos to you, Lynn, for stimulating your staff to vote when you were a manager.

ABC: Four Corners is one of my favourite programs on the ABC; investigative journalism at its best. Their programs often lead to further (police) inquiries and investigation. It’s right up there with Rachel Maddow.

    MU: Don’t they always?

    • Good question on the puzzles.  There also can’t be a lot (or even a few) people upping the average by getting interrupted and leaving it fir an hour, because I’ve had that happen, and after only a small number of seconds it stops counting until you make another move.  At one time we had a bunch in a row where the average in the morning was not the same as it was at noon, and then it was different again later (that’s really why I keep track of the average, though now it helps me make sure I’m describing each one correctly also).  My theory then was that they were new, and so there wasn’t a big enough sample for the first part of the first day.  But that won’t work for the door decoration.  So, I really don’t know what it is … just a few things it isn’t.

Mike Pence – That’s a very amusing scenario for me, but ycan you imagine what Trump’s base would do if he didn’t grant an expected pardon?  On the other hand, if he does pardon Trump.  Trumps base will be fine with it, but his political career is over with the rest of the nation.  Another example of everything Trump touches dies.

  8. Good post. HP: Agree with Joanne ad Lona. No need to be making excuses for him or how he should be able to get out of it. He needs to pay for all of his sins now.
YT: I like others will watch later on.
    MU: Yeah..they always do.
Finally got the heater repaired this afternoon.A whole week of nice cool air at nice. Had to happen when it was a cold storm passing through. Oh well, when it rains it pours. At least we got lots of rain.
Good luck with the noise level there. My trash pickup was today and they seem to be coming here way earlier in the morning around 6:00 AM now that it gets dark by 4:30 PM.
