It has been a long day with medical appointments.  I have finally finished this post.  We can all breathe a little easier now that we know TC is safe at home and someone is looking in on him.  Nameless posted UPDATE on Wednesday 10:30 CST earlier today and we will continue to check him and provide further updates.  There is a saying: Dogs have owners, cats have staff!  Good thing that cats have staff because it makes checking up so much easier.  Knowing TC as I do, he appreciates all your well wishes and I imagine he’ll say so himself when he gets out of the deep end of his cat box.

Short Takes

AlterNet — A Georgia woman has filed a federal lawsuit after she spent nearly four months in jail because a roadside drug test administered by untrained police officers falsely identified a bag of cotton candy as methamphetamine.

Monroe County resident Dasha Fincher filed the lawsuit last week against Monroe County, the two deputies who arrested her, and the company that makes the drug test. The lawsuit argues that the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was reckless and negligent and violated her civil rights.

What the hell Georgia!  Four months in jail for possession of cotton candy?  This is taking the war on drugs a little too far.  There is a significant error rate on this drug test yet the state continues to use it.  What’s more, the manufacturer knows of the error rates and continues to sell it.  There needs to be proper testing of the test kit and proper training for police in its use.  I certainly hope the victims are successful in their law suits!

Think Progress — Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) is doing her best to turn a Senate campaign in a state that President Donald Trump captured by nearly 20 percentage points in 2016 into a close race — and Tuesday’s debate was no exception.

Hyde-Smith, who was appointed to the Senate in April after Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) stepped down over health concerns, made headlines earlier this month when she joked about lynching at a campaign event.  …

At least five businesses, including Walmart and AT&T, have asked Hyde-Smith to return campaign donations in the wake of her comments.

Things didn’t improve from there. Hyde-Smith was subequently caught on video advocating for voter suppression, saying, “Maybe we want to make it just a little more difficult” for Democrats “that maybe we don’t want to vote.” Then, a 2014 Facebook post from Hyde-Smith’s account resurfaced, in which she is pictured standing next to a member of a a Southern Poverty Law Center-designated hate group wearing a Confederate soldier’s hat with the caption “Mississippi history at its best!”  …

It’s unlikely that Republicans are feeling any better about Hyde-Smith after her performance in Tuesday’s debate with Espy.

Over the span of an hour, the GOP senator cited an imaginary Republican colleague, asked for voters’ support on the wrong date, and offered a cringeworthy non-apology for her racist remarks about lynching.

Well isn’t she just the cutest cupcake on the platter . . . NOT!!!   There are a number of videos in the article with them being virtually all the same.  She rambles on, repeats herself, and definitely does not stick to the topic.  There is a chance here for Epsy to take the seat for the Democrats on 27 November 2018,  Go Epsy!!!

Daily Kos — The students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, have been awarded the 2018 International Children’s Peace Prize, for their tireless anti-gun activism in the aftermath of the Valentine’s Day mass shooting that changed their lives.  …

Archbishop Tutu is right: The Parkland students have moved the world, while always keeping young people at the center of their work.  …

They got the NRA screaming loud and spending tons of money, and even pushed new NRA president Oliver North to call them “terrorists.” They waged a civil protest war on companies that donate to the NRA. They spread a message of love at this year’s Tony Awards. They compelled states to change their gun laws, marking the “best year” in recent memory for gun control lobbying. The NRA blamed the Parkland students’ activism for their financial woes, while Barack Obama celebrated them. They wrote a song to honor their fallen classmates and compelled young people to not just register to vote, but actually cast a ballot.

Click through.  These young people clearly have a belief in tomorrow and their place in it.  I am very proud of them for trying to make the world a better place.

My Universe — Toby is four and a half year old cat that was found abandoned in a box, neara shop in Zaslavl, Belarus. He knows perfectly well that he is happy, but he prefers to meow, instead of clapping his ‘hands’.

This is so cute but please click through for this short music video as I can’t imbed it.  I nominate Toby for a CMA trophy! . . . honourable mention to the human.

  1. What can I say?  Just … bless you.

  2. Tomorrow I’m heading to Columbia, MO (home of U of MO) to spend TGD w/ my extended family.

I made a “Pumpkin Pie Cake” this morning from the recipe the host’s late-wife (pancreatic cancer) gave me.  A little too long in the oven I think.  It was a choice between undercooked pumpkin puree and overcooked topping.  I opted for the overcooked topping rather than a runny pumpkin pie filling.

I’m hoping the whipped cream (the real thing – NOT that canned stuff) I’m bringing will absolve me of my doneness.

This will be the my first TGD without my Mom and brother.  We usually had a relatively small gathering – 10 or so.  I know tomorrow will be 20+.  Hope having that many family members will help me through my favorite Holiday without my favorite family people being there.

Dibs on the drumstick!  (Than again – maybe not.  When I was a kid I always got the drumstick because most people like the white meat and hated dealing w/ all the tendons in a turkey drumstick.  But I’m no longer a kid, so I’ll be happy to forgo the honor to a younger drumstick-lover.  But maybe I’ll still be lucky …)

  3. YAY to the The Parkland students!!!

Love & Warm Healing Light to TC!! ? ?

  4. AN: How dumb can the PO-lice be, to do this to Ms. Fincher? I hope that she wins her lawsuit.

TP: She’s not doing the citizens of MS any good, VOTE her OUT!!! NOW!

DK: I couldn’t be prouder of these students, for not only,…who they are, but what they represent!! Kudos for receiving this prestigious Award, they certainly are well deserving of it!! WooHoo!!

    MU: How simply adorable!!

Ah…Thanksgiving day. Thankfully, we have no rambunctious behavior going on at the table, and the little ones get an opportunity to play outside when dinner is over. It’s a good day to be Thankful for many things, with one of them being….is that Tom is doing all right, and will be up on his paws here in no time. For that, I’m very, very grateful. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of folks who comment here. Happy Thanksgiving all. TC, take your time, rest/recuperate. Hugs!

Thank you, Lynn for your post.

*This just in: 1) ‘Lightly raining’, Trump: “Cancel everything!” ‘3 Broken Ribs’, RBG: “Sorry I’m late!”. ~Anon~ 2) The Trump Family sends you well wishes for a ‘Treason’s Greeting’. ~ Donna K. ~

  5. AN: I read the article on AlterNet, and it mentions that the drug testing kits those cops use are of questionable accuracy. Were those cops just looking for someone to drag in? Whatever happened to Protect and Serve?

TP: Anybody who can vote for Hyde-Smith after her lynching quip has a soul stuck in the first half of this century.

DK: More power to those kids! They need to get their campaign back into overdrive after the series of mass shootings we have had. Just a series? It’s been going on for decades!

Glad to know that TomCat is doing a little better. I hope that he is back in shape to start posting on his blog soon.

  6. 7:05 I could quote Goethe’s last words … not that anyone is sure what he meant exactly.

Alternet – If you hadn’t shared that, I would have. STILL shaking my head. Some of the other errors law enforcement made with this test: “In Georgia alone, police using the Nark II to field test drugs have wrongfully arrested at least 30 people, including a man with breath mints (positive for crack), a teacher with Goody’s Headache Powder (positive for cocaine), and a couple with vitamins (positive for ecstasy).”

TP – I wish I could be as confident that open racism and support for the Confederacy will sink her in Mississippi. The businesses cited as asking for money back are national businesses playing to the rest of the country (and may be grandstanding at that – have they actually gotten a penny back, or even an IOU?) I’m hopefu; – but we’ll have to see. Edit – On the other hand, this may just do it.)

DKos – I would take Desmond Tutu’s opinion on most things over that of most other people … and this is certainly no exception. (Signed petition, probably again.)

    Universe – Second the nomination!

  7. Thanks all!  I am trying to prepare a post for today.  I slept in so I am running late.

  8. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. Thanks for the information on TomCat. Happy to read that he is be taken care of. He remains in my prayers. Thanks Lynn

  9. Hope on many different levels.

Alternet: There is something very wrong with the “attitude” of the police force, from deputies to prosecutors, in Georrgia towards drug users and dealers. First they stopped Dasha Fincher’s car because of the “illegal” tint of her car windows, which turned out to be the excuse they needed to stop her because they thought she looked suspicious, then they arrest her because some devise can’t tell the difference between cotton candy and meth, leave her in jail to await the definitive test, which took three months(!) and then prosecution leave her to rot another month after the test concluded it wasn’t an illegal substance. Just for the heck of it, (suspected) druggies aren’t human anyway, right?

TP: Let’s hope that Democratic voters in Mississippi come to their senses enough to realize their personal vote is the one that’ll tip the scales and go out to vote for Epsy in the run-off. And for Republicans to be enough disillusioned in their candidate not to bother to go voting as usual. Then Epsy will have a (good) chance of winning.

DK: They couldn’t have made a better choice. Kudos to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students and kudos to their future.

My Universe: Toby is very cute meowing along, but don’t expect a repeat performance, because he’d rather sleep.

Thanks for the Open Thread, Squatch!
