From Nation of Change: Hundreds of thousands of Americans drive for Uber. And the company is looking for many more. It runs ads on Facebook that say, for example: “Driving toward something? Make extra money when it works for you and get there faster.” Another touts: “Earn $1,100 in Nashville for your first 200 Trips. Limited time guarantee! Terms apply.”
There’s just one catch: Many of those ads are not visible to women.
A ProPublica review of Facebook ads found that many purchased by Drive with Uber [Facebook delinked], the company’s recruiting arm, targeted only men in more than a dozen cities across the U.S. Our survey of 91 Uber ads found just one targeting only women; three did not target a specific sex.

Liberal Redneck – Yes. He’s right. And that’s why, in the Democatic primary for governor, I supported the candidate who had the Sierra Club endorsement (he won) and am continuing to support him. The other two may have been a little better on a couple of other things, but if we don’t have a world to live and gave a government in, none of that will matter. I love it that Trae made this with Al Gore (and that Al Gore made it with Trae).
The down side is that, while more people are beginning to notice, as Al said, “it’s like a trip through the Book of Revelation,” and the people who are noticeing THAT don’t CARE whether the planet survives. They don’t intend to be here.
Chris – I think her attorneys are taking the right tack: yes, she’ll testify IF her reasonable requests are accommodated. (They won’t be, unfortunately.)
Nation of Change – Interesting you should run this right after the previous story. Personally I think a woman who would want to drive for Uber would be either desperate or insane. Uber and Lyft both have dirty little secrets of sexual abuse happening.
Cartoon – Upper middle class at that.
So – does Uber subscribe to that hoary and long-debunked myth about women drivers? Another problem with many (not all) gig-economy companies such as Uber is most of the money goes to the upper-ups.
That cartoon is just plain sad, all the sadder because it is all too true.

Cartoon: A lot of our homeless are veterans. We have several that live in the woods here where I live. It’s so sad and most unfortunate!! I worry about them with Winter around the corner too.

Libberal Redneck: I can really understand where Trae is coming from, wanting to hit people over the head with a globe to finally get them to see reason. I may have been inclined to do so once or twice, but of course I’ve never yielded to such Republican urges. Reasoning, more reasoning, and then some more reasoning; that is the only way to go about is, as Al Gore surely must know. I just wish I had his patience sometimes.
MSNBC: Good to see so many intelligent, well -educated women are supporting Dr. Ford, though I expect it’ll do little more than polarize the issue further. But if it supports her when she takes the stand some day soon, that is all that really matters, isn’t it?
NoC: Facebook has so much data on its users it’ll know that targeting women with Uber ads is a waste of money and resources for their clients. To them it is the same business practicality of not targeting men with brassiere ads (unless just before Valentine’s Day). And they may be spot on, because I don’t think many women would want to work for Uber. so, I don’t think they do it because they’re sexist, it is their data model that makes them appear to be sexist. Then again Uber may well be, if it distinctly asks Facebook to target men only.
Cartoon: Hate to think of what your classes below working class look like now. Or have they all turned into one big poor and desperate class?

Trae Crowder — I try to do my part, but not as successfully as I’d like. But like Lona, I become impatient with those who just will not see or don’t care. This earth might be millions of years old, but at the current pace, it won’t make it another million years. Obviously, I am not talking about the Republican evangelical Christian earth that is only 6,000 years old by their estimates. Great to see Al Gore again! Can you imagine where the country might be at had SCOTUS not stolen the election from him in 2000?
MSNBC — It beggars disbelief that people would harass and threaten Christine Ford to the extent that she fears for her life and that of her family. And then to hack her e-mail? Obviously, they are soulless Republicans! There are truly sick people out there! Ford is correct . . . the FBI should be investigating and should include the harassment etc in their investigation. I applaud Ford for her intestinal fortitude to stand up against this onslaught, and I back her 1,000%!!!
Nation of Change — Discrimination is illegal although some will try to wiggle around it. I have been discriminated against based on race, body type and gender — I’m a heavyset white female. It is no fun. One instance was by a bank VP and based on body type. When I have heard or seen discrimination perpetrated by others, even my mother, I have spoken up . . . and fortunately have been successful changing some behaviour. We must challenge those instances of discrimination that we see, and that includes on FB. IMO, it is incumbent upon FB to ensure that any employment ad is not discriminatory. FB needs to feel the pain of penalties.

Well it is confirmed, my Winnie is diabetic so now I have to give him insulin shots twice daily once we figure out the dosing. This is going to be interesting, but at least I have experience giving needles to myself and to a previous cat. Big changes in store on the horizon. You could come up here where it has been cooler and much wetter of late.
