For Ogling Only

Now, if I were to tell you that I have never, or do never, enjoy the delights of gazing upon the female form, I’d either have to admit I was lying or turn in my TomCat ID card.  However, even I realize that breasts have a primary purpose, and for that purpose, nothing is better.  However, it appears that the Republican Reich wants to make them for ogling only!

A resolution to encourage breast-feeding was expected to be approved quickly and easily by the hundreds of government delegates who gathered this spring in Geneva for the United Nations-affiliated World Health Assembly.

Based on decades of research, the resolution says that mother’s milk is healthiest for children and countries should strive to limit the inaccurate or misleading marketing of breast milk substitutes.

Then the United States delegation, embracing the interests of infant formula manufacturers, upended the deliberations.

American officials sought to water down the resolution by removing language that called on governments to “protect, promote and support breast-feeding” and another passage that called on policymakers to restrict the promotion of food products that many experts say can have deleterious effects on young children.

When that failed, they turned to threats, according to diplomats and government officials who took part in the discussions. Ecuador, which had planned to introduce the measure, was the first to find itself in the cross hairs.

The Americans were blunt: If Ecuador refused to drop the resolution, Washington would unleash punishing trade measures and withdraw crucial military aid. The Ecuadorean government quickly acquiesced…. [emphasis added]

This shows just how low Republicans will to increase profits for the greedy.

  1. They really do want to take us back to the fifties, or even the forties, don’t they? When I was born, they were (knowingly0 giving new mothers painkillers which made their breast milk taste bad. I was starving – and not shy about letting the world know about it. My Mom had no choice but to go to bottle feeding. No wonder I have a lifelong allergy to soy.

  2. It figures, doesn’t it??
    Back in the day when my children were born, we were pinching pennies every day. Mother’s milk was flowing from me like Niagara Falls, so of course not only did I breast feed them, but also had that wonderful quality/quiet time with them as newborns. Yes, it’s all about the $$, nowadays. Sad.

  3. One of the dumbest things Twitler’s administration has done – and it’s a helluva long list of stupidities to pick from.

    At least AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics), ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) and WIC (Women, Infants and Children) have come out against such stupidity.

    And at least as far as I can tell, this was not instituted by the formula companies themselves.

    But let’s not forget they don’t exactly have clean hands.

    A recent study by the National Bureau of Economic Research estimated that 66,000 infants died in low- and middle-income countries in 1981 alone because of the availability of formula.

    “Malnutrition and poverty are the precise settings where you absolutely do need to breast-feed, because that’s the setting where access to safe and clean water for reconstituting powdered formula is often impossible to find,” said Dr. Michele Barry, senior associate dean for global health and director of the Center for Innovation in Global Health in the Stanford School of Medicine, in response to the president’s tweet.

  4. Mother (literally) F*****G imbecile!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Maybe that was his problem, in those formative months after birth (He was born?), virtually no human contact.  Dad probably fed him vinegar…lying alone in his crib, with the bottle propped up, for parents’ convenience.  But, not until they bought stocks in vinegar producing companies…it’s all about money!

  5. Some of those knuckle-dragging lucre-grubbers belching propaganda that makes infant formula seem better than Nature’s Own probably work for the formula manufacturers.

  6. The US govt bullies disgust me!!!
    Teach your children, BREAST IS BEST!!!

  7. Oh, forgot to mention…

    I had extra milk after feedings, and so as a neighborhood, all the moms got together and formed a breast milk ‘bank’ for those moms who opted breast milk over formula. I used to joke that I had enough to go around to feed more babies, and so the ‘bank’ worked very well in the trailer park where we lived. Simpler times, yes. But helping others was a fulfilling endeavor, and for the little ones too.

    For me, anyways.

  8. This message disturbed me yesterday and today it disturbs me just as much. It’s utterly disgusting that the US actually threatened countries carrying the resolution with punishing trade measures and withdrawal of crucial military aid. This is the World Health Organisation, for frack’s sake! To sell a few dollars more of formula they want poor women, who have little access to clean water, or any water at all, to think that they are doing their best for their babies while they are actually doing them harm or may even kill them, while 40 years of research has shown that with mother milk they both give their babies the most nutritious milk and build up their immune system at the same time. It is beyond ironic that Russia was the one in the end to introduce the measure because the US didn’t dare to threaten them.

    This episode has made me angrier than I ever was before and really destroyed any trust I had left in America as a global player. Instead of winning, Drumpf and his cronies have made the country lose it all.

  9. There’s that ditch again . . . or is it a deep, plunging “ravine”?  I was doing a piece on this using a Newsweek article and this NY Times piece, but you beat me to it.

    I was absolutely astonished by the US’s actions.  But as I thought about it, why should I be astonished?  This is the same government that:

    1. takes babies and children away from their parents when they migrate to the US without the proper documentation;

    2. cuts nutritional programmes for poor kids;

    3. makes healthcare unaffordable for millions of people, many of them kids;

    4. that talks about human rights as if it is the gold standard when it is not;

    5. which has yet to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child which was signed 20/11/89.  Of all UN members, the US is the ONLY country not to have ratified it.

    And then to bully other nations and threaten them with trade sanctions etc if they presented the proposal or voted for it . . . unconscionable!!!  And it wasn’t just Ecuador.

    “The showdown over the issue was recounted by more than a dozen participants from several countries, many of whom requested anonymity because they feared retaliation from the United States.”

    What also made me angry was the US, during NAFTA negotiations,  “…pushing for language that would limit the ability of Canada, Mexico and the United States to put warning labels on junk food and sugary beverages, …”  Childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes are increasing among children partially because of sugar and fast food diets.  So the Drumpf régime is happy to make kids sick while they take away their healthcare, well at least in the US.

    On top of everything else, the US has made overtures to leave the WHO, or at the very least withdraw funding.

    This is Drumpf!  Is this what his 61 million voters were expecting from their candidate?  Oops, I forgot . . . they did not think before they voted!

    There are cases when mother’s cannot breastfeed and need to rely on formula.  My brother was such a case . . . he was allergic to my mother.  But those cases are not sufficient to warrant this kind of bull shit!

    • I go back to a comment I made last week, the US should be suspended from the G7 and the UN Security Council losing its veto in the process.  This is likely to play into his hands unfortunately, the arrogant, narcissistic bastard that he is.  Obama was right — elections have consequences!

  10. Thanks Hugs and Amen to all.  I was bottle fed, and I’ve tried to make up for it ever since. 26
