Fourth of July 2018

4th of July 2017

This article is a repeat of last year’s with minor additions.

Traditionally I have celebrated Independence Day with excerpts from the Declaration of Independence, videos of the local fireworks display, and lessons on the differences between true patriotism and nationalism.  However, then the US was an independent nation.  Now it is under foreign domination. I’m sorry, but as long as Donald Trump, Putin’s Puppet, and his Republican Reich stay in power and keep the US in thrall to Russia, the 4th of July will be a day of mourning.

  1. My classical radio station today is playing pretty much all American music, much of it “patriotic.” I do realize that Victor Herbert (“Babes in Toyland,” “Naughty Marietta,” many others you’ve probably heard) died in 1924, when we were so deep in denial we didn’t know there WAS such a thing as denial. But listening to his “American Fantasy” (or Fantasie or Fantasia – whatever) and hearing “Dixie” included is still extremely jarring.

NPR tweets the Declaration of Independence line by line every Fourth of July. Last year (and apparently this year) they got (are getting) a lot of hate from the right because, apparently, they confuse King George III with Orange Judas (understandable, but not expected from his own.) The Smithsonian also has a tradition of publishing (with updates) the article “Do American Indians celebrate the 4th of July?” An excellent read. Needs a hanky warning.

  2. Amen….Amen!!!

  3. November 6th can’t get here soon enough!

  4. I agree – Not-So-Happy 4th of July this year. Let us hope that next year’s will be happier. It will be, if we progressives get our arses to the polls and cast informed ballots.

  5. I do so know how you feel TC. Never more than where I now live. Very sad state of affairs. Bless you all this July 4th.

  6. “From her beacon-handGlows world-wide welcome”

    • Thanks – this was quite a story.  If anyone missed it, a courageous protester climbed Lady Liberty to protest the separation of families.  Naturally, Trumpers, in the person of one guy who was interviewed, complained that she had “ruined their vacation.”

  7. Thanks and tired hugs. 17

I hope there is more reason to celebrate next year.

  8. The graphic is telling!  Drumpf aka His Orangeness, and Republicans do not provide a celebratory atmosphere.  Fortunately, they cannot destroy 240 years of history and accomplishments, only the past 2 years, and unfortunately, set up the country for future failures!.
