Buried in the wall to wall coverage of the latest NRA massacre, another story almost escaped attention.  The attempt in the Senate to secure the DREAMers by Democrats and far too few Republicans failed.  It failed almost completely because of the vehemence of opposition to it by one avowed racist, the Grand Imperial Wizard of the Republican Reich.  We know the who.  Lets move on to the how and the why.

This past week was meant to be dedicated to a rare open debate on immigration in the Senate, and once again, centrist Democrats and Republicans proposed a pair of similar and reasonable compromises on what has arguably become the most charged issue of the day. Alas, they both fell before the anti-immigration furor of the Trump administration. But then President Trump’s own hard-line immigration bill fell much harder, leaving the fate of the so-called Dreamers in limbo.

The compromise measures would have resolved the fate of the Dreamers, the 1.8 million immigrants who were brought to the United States illegally as children and whose plight has generated broad sympathy. One bill written by a bipartisan group of senators calling itself the Common Sense Coalition would also have given Mr. Trump money for his much-ballyhooed wall along the Mexican border, though over a 10-year period, while putting off more contentious questions about immigration.

Unfortunately, Mr. Trump is not interested in resolving a difficult problem if he can exploit it for political gain. After threatening to veto any measure that didn’t include his tough demands, and getting Department of Homeland Security officials to bad-mouth the compromise measures, the president succeeded in getting most Republicans to vote against them, leaving both short of the 60 votes they needed, one by eight votes and one by six.

Minutes later, the Senate even more decisively beat the White House’s own proposal, which would have provided a path to citizenship for the Dreamers while also severely limiting family-based immigration and ending the diversity visa lottery program. The bill fell 21 votes short of the needed 60…

DINOs Donnelly and Manchin do NOT deserve to have their names in blue.

If anyone on either list is your Senator, please call their office and respectfully tear them a new asshole.

Now, let’s move on to the why.  Chris Hayes nailed it!

Republicans wanted securing Dreamers to fail, but they want to blame Democrats.  Trump has already tweeted that we abandoned the DREAMers. “Cannot believe how BADLY DACA recipients have been treated by the Democrats,” Trump partially wrote in a tweet Friday. “[T]otally abandoned.”  It was Trump that suspended DACA, and he could reinstate it with the stroke of a pen.  He and his Republican Reich abandoned them.

Most Dreamers are Latino.  Most Latinos vote for Democrats.  The more Latino citizens we have, the harder it becomes for Republicans and their Russian sidekicks to steal elections.  That’s the why.  Having no power sucks!

RESIST THE REPUBLICAN REICH!!

  1. My senators here are on the list, who voted against the Common Sense Proposal. They will be getting a box of brillo pads instead of toilet paper too come Monday!! over the phone too.

  2. The failure of the DREAM act is just one of a myriad reasons why we need to get more Progressives in Congress. Not just Democrats – genuine Progressives. Make sure you are registered to vote, get all your progressive kith and kin registered, support Democrats who are real Progressives and not just GOP Lite, and above all, VOTE!

  3. TC: I think there is something wrong with your two list…

    .

  4. I predicted that it would happen in the House – but I predicted this would happen – that we would be allowed to formulate it in the Senate, but that it would never be allowed to pass. Chris’s analysis did nail it … but I am not sure that people will be confused as much as Republicans hope they will be. We shall see.

  5. The president, “and his advisors,” like hell!  How about the president and his sycophants. As far as I’m concerned, the “and his advisors,” is there only to take some of the heat away from the resident psycho!  So, now the issue may go to the courts, which may be the best option.
Mueller:  He has indicted 13 people in regard to the Russian hacking situation, apparently citing their activities as going back to 2015.  As a response the truth twisting psycho-in-chief claims, again, that this vindicates him, because the hacking program pre-dates the primaries.  DUH!  NOT! That the program may have started before the primaries proves nothing of the sort.  2015 may well have been the testing grounds for the hackers, getting up to speed, for example.  The tDump logic, as usual, takes something that may have had a factual basis, and twists it all around until it comes out his ass!

    • The fact that money has been coined for centuries and printed for generations does not mean that you are innocent if you accept a cash bribe.  (I rejected calling him a snake the other day because snakes are slender, but I am re-thinking that.)

  6. It really is beyond words and impossible to understand for anyone living in a “old-school” democracy: a president and his sycophants (yes, the better word, Mitch) at war with Congress, influencing their voting behavior on a bipartisan bill by threatening with vetoes and throwing in their own scaremongering fake news to boot (“911 will be repeated”). Making them say no to a bill that had many flaws, but at least did what the majority of the American people want it to do: protect DREAMers.

And here I was, thinking I could no longer be shocked by how little is left of democracy in the USA.

  7. One of the best things we could do is rid the White House of white-nationalist Stephen Miller because he is often the last one to whisper in the ear of the serial-liar-in-chief.

  8. Drumpf cannot be trusted at the best of times.  This rabid racist and xenophobe will do whatever is in his best interests, regardless of what he says or pledges.  And Republicans are right behind him!  As you say Puddy Tat, “It was Trump that suspended DACA, and he could reinstate it with the stroke of a pen.  He and his Republican Reich abandoned them.”  Wouldn’t it be nice if the US could deport Drumpf and the Republicans! . . . how about to prison!

Freya has the correct idea — fill Congress with progressives that will put an end to this Drumpfian and Republican nightmare.

Dreamers have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness too!

  9. Thanks all.  Running out of gas hugs!
