One by one, senior officials from the FBI and the DOJ have been disappearing, victims of the Republican onslaught of attacks designed to obstruct justice and stop the investigation into the Republican conspiracy to enlist Russia’s help to enable Donald Trump to infest the White House.  Rod Rosenstein is the last official needed to maintain the Mueller investigation, and Republicans are taking aim at him.

0130Rosenstein

A secret, highly contentious Republican memo reveals that Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein approved an application to extend surveillance of a former Trump campaign associate shortly after taking office last spring, according to three people familiar with it.

The renewal shows that the Justice Department under President Trump saw reason to believe that the associate, Carter Page, was acting as a Russian agent. But the reference to Mr. Rosenstein’s actions in the memo — a much-disputed document that paints the investigation into Russian election meddling as tainted from the start — indicates that Republicans may be moving to seize on his role as they seek to undermine the inquiry.

The memo’s primary contention is that F.B.I. and Justice Department officials failed to adequately explain to an intelligence court judge in initially seeking a warrant for surveillance of Mr. Page that they were relying in part on research by an investigator, Christopher Steele, that had been financed by the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <NY Times>

The Republican memo, sight unseen, is a bold faced lie.  Carter Page was under FISA surveillance as a Russian agent long before there was any investigation into Trump, and the FISA warrant had been renewed several times at 90 day intervals.  All Rosenstein did was to apply for another pro forma 90 day extension.  Also, the research by Christopher Steele was initially financed by a Republican PAC.

Rachel Maddow broke this down in so much detail, that she spent 28 minutes doing it.

To reiterate, with Rosenstein gone, even if Trump did not fire Mueller, Rosenstein’s Trump appointed replacement could hamstring Mueller’s investigation.  This must not be allowe3d to happen.

  1. And I see McCabe just got pressured into terminal leave while awaiting retirement in March.

  2. Repugs are something else, and this is downright nasty.
Geezh, it’s going to sheet up there now!!! WOW!

  3. If the Rethuglicans are gunning for Rob Rosenstein, it’s probably because they’re afraid of him.

  4. If we are not already in a legitimate constitutional crisis, our toe is right at that line.

It’s gotten so bad that news analyst John Heilemann asked on “Morning Joe”

“Is it possible that we actually have a Russian agent running the House Intel Committee on the Republican side?”

    • Possible?  Absolutely.  Probable?  That too.  Certain?  I would say so.  It’s like something out of The Tamarind Seed (Evelyn Anthony) … which was written, published, and made into a movie long before the colors red and blue switched sides.

  5. It appears that there is virtually no limit to the crap these traitorous s**tholes will go to!

  6. If there was ever any more obvious evidence of obstruction of justice, at the very least, the conduct of Drumpf and Republicans is it.  To continually go after people, now Rosenstein, like Putin goes after his political enemies, is it.  I would say that the US does have a constitutional crisis on its hands.  The rule of law is being subverted for political ends.

  7. Republicans are in full assault mode. After pressuring FBI Director Christofer Wray to shake up his FBI staff FBI and demoting Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, who then stepped down weeks before his retirement as a result, the only one who stands in the way of putting Mueller out of business is Ron Rosenstein. Drumpf and Republicans have been very successful in taking everyone who could be a threat out of the political equation, so we can assume we’ve seen the last of Rosenstein soon. With the help of the GOP Drumpf doesn’t need to put his opponents in front of a firing squad to get rid of them like most dictators do. Politically dead is good enough.

  8. Thanks, hugs and amen to all! 10
