SLAPP? Until today I had no idea what that meant. Now that I do know, I’m very concerned about the way the Republican Reich’s corporate masters use SLAPP lawsuits to stifle dissent. Fortunately, we have the Reich on the left, Robert Reich to explain it to us.
Have you heard of SLAPP lawsuits? You soon will.
SLAPP stands for “Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation.” It is a lawsuit brought by big corporations intended to censor, intimidate, and silence critics by burdening them with the overwhelming costs of a legal defense until they’re forced to abandon their criticism or opposition. And it may be the biggest threat to the resistance you’ve never heard of.
Here’s an example: Resolute Forest Products, one of Canada’s largest logging and paper companies, has sued, in a U.S. court, environmental groups that have been campaigning to save Canada’s boreal forest…

Oh, yeah, I’ve heard of it – although not lately. I don’t think the technique died down, but the outrage did – possibly because there were so many other outrageous things going on. Definitely, if you see something, SAY something (or SCREAM something!)

The next book that I will read, already in my hands, is “Democracy In Chains, The Deep History of The Radical Right’s Stealth Plan For America,” by Nancy MacLean. It is about Charles Koch and his use of the tactics of James McGill Buchanan, of the Jim Crow south. It seems that this SLAPP issue fits right in with the tactics of the Right. SLAPP, also, is so very much of a kind with hoe tRump has operated for decades! “I’ll sue you!!”

SLAPP is well-named because it is a SLAP in the face of liberty, of patriotism, of every activist, of every genuine American who believes in what this country truly represents – the right to dissent, the right to disagree, and to agree to disagree. It must be fought with all the fury and might that We The People can muster. Those evil suits are strictly to stifle opposition to the <1% Fat Cats and render “common” folk hapless, oppressed peasants.

Just when you thought the plutocrats couldn’t sink any lower, they come up with something like SLAPP. The lawsuits they bring against anyone resisting them are pure confabulation and so ridiculous that they get thrown out in any sane court. Until Drumpf has replaced enough judges with his minions, that is. But by the time it gets thrown out, the Resistance has spent hundreds of thousand dollars on lawyering up and getting the ludicrous case dismissed. Just one such lawsuit could mean the end of an organization like Greenpeace if we don’t donate enough, or rather more, and chances are many Americans soon won’t be able to afford that, right?
It’s sickening to think that plutocrats have enough money to waste and are willing to “invest” it in SLAPP cases, which undoubtedly will cost them a bundle too (Mr. Powe and his little helpers won’t come cheap, I bet) because they are certain it’ll pay off in the end. With the Resistance and their donors both bled dry they’ll rule the world.
I had not heard of SLAPP before, but when there is no defensible position for the actions of a corporation, it makes “cents”, which is really what SLAPP is about. Interrupt their money stream and they will SLAPP you silly!
The oligarchs are trying to take complete control and manipulating the RICO laws to do so. I wonder how much Drumpf knows about the actions of one of his personal lawyers, Michael Bowe. To be sure, the current Republican dominated Congress will do nothing to plug the hole, a large sinkhole to be sure, in the law. Any SLAPP suit that gets to the current SCOTUS will come out smelling like roses.
SLAPP makes a mockery out of the 1st amendment and must be fought against. Corporations are not people, and money is not free speech!
