Nov 302017

The end of November is upon us, and I’m about to get busier than a long-tail TomCat in a rocking chair factory.  Tomorrow, I’ll change the poll.  Then I’ll make all the graphics and collect all the data needed to prepare the Monthly Report for November.  I’ll write the monthly report on Saturday.  I’m a little slow today, because I have a new mouse and keyboard, a Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Combo 2000.  After over five years of very heavy use, keys and buttons on the old one weren’t reliable.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:33 (average 5:13).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From YouTube (Jeff Merkley Channel): Climate Disruption Quiz Episode 8

I missed #3. It surprises me that Trump missed blocking the report. Oregon leads the way. RESIST!!

From YouTube (CSPAN Channel): Point of Order raised in British House of Commons regarding President Trump’s tweets

The tweeting twit that grabs twat has made us an international pariah again! RESIST!!

From NY Times: Gun rights legislation that would allow concealed-carry permit holders from one state to legally carry their guns to any other state passed a key House panel along party lines on Wednesday and appeared to be headed for a vote on the floor of the House.

The measure is the first gun-related legislation to move in Congress since two of the most deadly mass shootings in United States history, in Las Vegas and Sutherland Springs, Texas, and would hand a long-sought victory to gun rights advocates, including the National Rifle Association.

Representative Richard Hudson, Republican of North Carolina and the bill’s original sponsor, called the measure “a simple, common sense solution” and “one of the most important pro-Second Amendment measures in Congress.”

Democrats on the committee, along with gun control advocates and big city law enforcement officials, put up fierce opposition, warning that the bill would have disastrous effects on public safety in states and cities with more restrictive concealed carry laws. The bill, they said, tramples the rights of states to determine their own laws, but a series of amendments offered by Democrats to halt it failed.

We need to keep fighting this one. Republican Ammosexual maniacs ranging the country with concealed weapons is a huge threats to public safety. RESIST!!

  1. 5:34  I can’t even find one with google that has clusters where some blooms get so much bigger than the rest.

Jeff – I got the same score you did, for the same reasons.  If he had given some wrong answers closer to the right ones, I might not have done as well – but I do have a handle on the order of magnitude.  (Before I quit smoking, I had gotten up to more than 50 cigarettes a day – much more, in fact, – but I was also 30 years old and my lungs were developed, so I have recovered better than these poor kids are likely to.)

CSPAN – Oh, that confirmation bias!  Trump believes garbage because his mind is full of garbage.  But none of is immine from the lure of confirmation bias.  And, with so many rumors floating around, it’s hard to stay clear.  (Speaking of rumors, there is one now that Rex Tillerson will be dumped and relace with Mike Pompeo, and a worse one, that Tom Cotton will replace Pompeo at CIA.  How does he do it?  I would not have thought it could even GET worse.)

Cartoon – HE made a few heads explode.  Good quote.  Here’s another:  “If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat.”

  2. Climate Distruption: I got one wrong, #4. Yes, y’all in Oregon should be proud of Mr. Merkley. Can I clone him? to come to Tx.?

C-Span: Gawd, dt tweeting that was downright awful !! I can see why they are rightfully upset. ‘An international pariah’ Indeed!!

NYT: Unfortunately, here in Texas, a lot of folks embrace this, and don’t view this as a threat. I do!! The last time I held a gun was when I did small arms training in boot camp.

Cartoon: Beloved writer and Humorist. My favorite quote from him is: ““Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”

Glad you got a new mouse and keyboard. Hope that you get a chance to rest too. Take care, enjoy your evening, and Thanks, Tom.

  3. YT/CSPAN: Going down the tube…so quickly!  And the dear source of the videos has already been convicted of hate crimes, just his kind of lady!!
    Merkley: He rocks!
NYT: And he, an his GOPIG buddies are taking the rest of us down with them!
‘Toon: Is that Clemens quote dated after, or during the Scope’s “Monkey Trial?”  There was a somewhat bullying game,in my childhood, called “Monkey in the Middle,” but now we have a monkey in the W.H.

  4. Just found a Care2 petition re environmental justice.

I hope to be back later.

    • Are you alright, dear Lynn? Sugar levels that low and twice in a day are very worrying. I hope you consulted your GP on this, as TomCat suggested yesterday. Your insulin dosage may need some tweaking.

      • Thanks Lona, I am fine.  I have quarterly blood tests this weekend and will see my doctor next week anyway for my prescription renewals.  I already tweak my insulin so Wednesday, I took only a half dose in the morning before breakfast and physio.  Then I had soup and a sandwich for lunch.  The 2nd low was 2 .5 hours after lunch while I was tutoring so I had some fruit (good carbs).  The third was just before I left for home so I ate some glucose tablets and then stopped at the grocery store to get more.  I always have glucose with me and I have a bottle in the kitchen, one by my bed and one in the den.  Thanks again for your concern.

  5. Jeff Merkley: Kudos to Jeff yet again.

CSPAN: In addition: British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Thursday that U.S. President Donald Trump was wrong to retweet a video from a far-right British group which she said was “hateful” and spreads division.

NYT: The GOP is at it again. Whenever all attention is drawn to a bill like Trumpcare or the Tax Cut Cut Cut, the GOP quickly tries to pass some bill that is devastating all by itself without anyone noticing. For this NRA bill I’ve only this to say: Are you out of your bloody minds?

Cartoon: I bet Mr. Twain could have expressed the feelings I vented above far more eloquently.

  6. Thanks all.  Hugs! 29

  7. Puzzle — 4:50

Jeff Merkley — Kudos yet again!  Like you, I missed #3.  Being from the Drumpf régime, I thought the report would say ‘natural causes’ because it would not acknowledge ‘human caused’.  This might be the 1st time that the Drumpf régime has told the truth!  I wonder how it felt to them to tell the truth?  I suspect it was a very uncomfortable feeling.

YouTube — “The tweeting twit that grabs twat has made us an international again!” —  I believe that should read “… is still making the US an international pariah!”  It started long before the election as “will make” and changed to “is making” after the election in November!   From the BBC:

“Veteran Tory MP Sir Nicholas Soames said Mr Trump had finally proved he is “wholly unsuited” to the role of president. after the election.”

NY Times — Republican Ammosexual maniacs are making it easier and easier.  Gun control is in the news in Canada as well, and the government has said it will have gun control legislation in early 2018.  Ralph Goodale, the Public Safety Minister, has said that licensing will be tightened up and assault rifles will likely be banned.  As it is, Canada’s gun laws are much tighter than the US.  This became a point after the mass shootings at Dawson College, Montréal in 2006 by Kimveer Gill (1 dead, 19 wounded plus Gill committed suicide), at École Polytechnique, Montreal in 1989 by Marc Lépine (14 women dead, 20 women wounded — no men — they were culled from the classes), and the more recent mass shooting at Grande Mosquée de Québec by Alexandre Bissonnette in January 2017 (6 dead, 19 wounded).  After 3 mass shootings since 1989, Canada is doing something to tighten already strict controls.  The US is doing what after how many mass shootings just in 2017 — 11 shootings, 107 dead, 587 wounded (source: Mother Jones.)? It is time that the US got with the programme and significantly tightened up its gun laws.

Cartoon — Mark Twain — I wonder if he ever envisioned just how big he would become.
