Wendy is due to arrive in about ten minutes, and am I ever ready for a shower! I have been since five minutes after I got out of the shower on Wednesday evening. I have a light week coming up, and I don’t need to go out, except for a trip to the bank, which I’ll probably take tomorrow morning. Yesterday was only 93°. Humidity is 88%. My AC filters the air in my room, but in the hallways and outside, the smoke from wildfires is bad enough to irritate my eyes. I hope you are enjoying your weekend. Later: Wendy arrived, before I added the third Short Take. We got a lot done, and she is still a national treasure, but she just left, and I already need a shower. ARGH!!

From TPM: House Speaker Paul Ryan on Thursday emphasized that congressional Republicans must pass major legislation or they will risk their majority in the 2018 elections.
“If we don’t do our job we will depress turnout,” Ryan told the Wisconsin State Journal. “I am frustrated as well.”
Ryan blamed inaction on the Senate, which recently failed to pass a bill to repeal Obamacare.
“We’re pretty frustrated with the slow pace of things (in the Senate), but in the House, we’ve actually done most of our agenda except for welfare reform and tax reform,” he said.
The speaker also lamented the distractions from the White House, though he did not mention President Donald Trump by name.

DKos – though the circumstances are very different, I am reminded of a story about a Colonel I once served under, who was very, very hard of hearing. At an “Office Hours” (think in terms of a hearing) he somehow decided that the NCO who was bringing the change against a junior enlisted man was the one who was being charged. He launched into a tirade (come to think of it, rather like Trump) about how shameful it was for a Non-Commissioned Offcer to be charged with whatever-it-was – the NCO was openmouthed with shocked disbelief, the defendant was snickering, and the Sergeant Major was frantically trying to get the Colonel’s attention to tell him the actual state of affairs, and the Colonel wasn’t hearing. Finally the Sergeant Major got through. The Colonel’s explanation: “Oh. Well, he looked guilty to me.”

DK: Wintrich must have a severe case of blinding Racism if he can’t even tell his “races” apart. And it must be contagious because the numbskull got at least 2,500 likes on this tweet.
TPM: I’m waiting for the other shoe to fall and have Ryan and McConnell go for each other’s jugulars. Ryan wrote the first abysmal version of Drumpfcare and although it passed the House, everyone knew it had to be rewritten completely to get anywhere in the Senate. McConnell had a go at it, but failed miserably in uniting all Republicans behind it, and now Ryan is blaming the Senate, i.e. McConnell for the frustratingly slow pace of things. That sure is the right way to “unite” Republicans, eh? And then we’re not even talking about Drumpf’s divisive role in the equation. Perhaps soon the only thing Republicans may unite on is Drumpf’s impeachment. But then McConnel’s and Ryan’s head may also roll…

Well the smoke in the air has continued, unabated, and is definitely creating health problems here in the Lower Mainland. If our air quality is an 8 and a problem, I can’t even imagine Kamloops at 45! A teen yesterday showed me a picture he took at 700 hours a few days ago on the highway in North Vancouver. Where there should be trees, there was only smoke. The sun was a red ball in the sky. We need some offshore winds to clean the air, much cooler temps, and a lot of rain to put out the fires!!! That is not going to happen this week or likely next. And climate change deniers think there is no such thing as climate change??? Think again assholes!
