Aug 042017

Compared to June, results are mixed.  Visits and Bandwidth are up.  Uniques, Page Views, and Hits are down.  It could still be a lot worse, given all my medical mayhem last month.

Here is our ClustrMap for 2017 Year to Date.

ClustRMap07-2017

ClustrMap misses a lot of visits, because many visits can’t be easily traced to a location..

Here are our top five articles:

Friday Fun: For Chris Christie, Life Can Be a “Beach” 7/7/2017 854
Obstruction of Justice 6/21/2017 730
And the Word of the Lord Came to Limbaugh 4/18/2010 724
Occupy Portland had the runs 10/11/2011 722
|
Jane Smiley: Capitalist Pigs 1/17/2010 532

The count represents only the people who followed an external link to that specific article.  Three were from April.  Congrats to Nameless, who  wrote not only the top article, but also, the only article from July to make the list.

Here are our top non-blog/news referrers (100 referral minimum):

Care2 2,240
Google 1,696
Stumbleupon 286
Baidu 127

Care2 and Google are up from June.  Stumbleupon and Baidu are down.

We had 7 sites  with 2 or more referrals, down 3 from June.  Putting blogs’ links here increases the ratings of their sites, so this “linkey love” is our thank you for their referral support.

As of midnight August 1, we had 7,546 articles and 91,021 comments.

Congrats to SoINeedAName (Nameless) for posting the 91,000th comment.

I recommend using your own avatar. Go to Gravatar.  Sign up using the email address you use to post comments here and upload the image you want to use as your avatar.  Whenever you comment under that email address here or on any WordPress blog (several others too), that image will become your avatar.

Your Administrators are Lynn Squance, aka Sasquatch or Squatch, SoINeedAName, aka Nameless, and I, aka TomCat, the Founder.  Your Editors are Joanne Dixon, aka JD the Erynator and Lona Goudswaard, aka Lona the Napster.  I  promoted them from Author in August to give them the ability to add graphics to comments and the ability to correct my innumerable typos.

This is our policy on links.  We do not embed links to extreme Republican websites, like Faux Noise, Breitfart or World Nut Daily.  However I leave notes in square brackets when I delete such links, (example: [faux noise delinked]) so readers, who wish to follow them can click through to the source article.  I also remove topical links.  Finally, I blank the target on all links, so they open in a new tab or window.

I expect things to stay relatively slow through the summer as I will be devoting a lot of time to medical mayhem.   We have survived seven months of Putin’s Puppet and his Republican Reich.  During that time he has failed almost across the board.  That’s your fault.  Your efforts to educate others and expose his treacherous dealings to the light of day have frustrated him at every turn.  Kudos to you all!  And special kudos to you for saving the ACA from a Republican onslaught that almost succeeded! Keep up the fantastic work!  Thank you for all that you do, here and elsewhere!

  1. Thank you, Tom for this intensive, well researched post.

    I certainly do appreciate all that YOU do here, and your insight and comments.

    btw…coming here is the highlight of my day! This also applies to your wonderful Administrators as well!!

    Kudos, and Thanks again!

  2. An insignificant lower number of visits is nothing to worry about in the (very hot) summer month of July, and the number of unique visitors is actually up from June, so that’s good! Given all your medical mayhem and heat-stress/exhaustion, and with the help of your support team (especially Joanne, Lynn and Nameless), PP has done really well, I’d say. If Drumpf manages to keep his fingers off the Twitter keyboard during his 17 days of so called “working holiday”, August may slow things down before it picks up in September again. And I don’t think that would be such a bad thing as it is no reflection on PP at all.

    Thanks for all the hard work and keep it up, TomCat. 14

  3. It is summertime and even older, well educated, mostly poor progressives need to take a break to get away from the Orange Ogre and his minions. That could account for some of the mixed results. After all, who is going to take a laptop to the beach!

    Thanks for all the excellent articles and the commentary. Like Pat, PP is the highlight of my day.

    Thanks everybody for all you do!

    Resist, Persist and Remove!!!

  4. Like everyone else, I kind of doubt any of the small fluctuations are statistically significant  Keep on keeping on!

    P. S. I don’t think anyone not at least an author can successfully blank the target on links. Also, an editor (and presumably an author) who goes into edit on a comment from a non-author cannot blank the target for them. It LOOKS like you can – the correct code shows up – but, after saving, it still doesn’t open in a new window or tab. I just tried again and re-checked – no luck, Possibly an administrator could, but again, maybe not.

    • JD, I was able to alter links in a Pat B comment in Open Thread – 8/1/2017 so that they would open in new windows.  Nameless and TC will be able to do that too.

    • Editors can. Using the Open Thread Squatch used, type the text to display, highlight it, and click the link button.  Put the URL on the URL field snf New Window in the Target field.  I think anyone can blank their targets while commenting. 19

      • And that is exactly what I did on Mitch’s comment on the August 3 Open Thread.  Click on the link before you open it – and then back up to get back to the page.  THEN open the comment for edit, and you will see that “target=blank” IS in the code – I put it there, I saved, it stayed in the code, but it isn’t working.  Of course if you open it and save I expect it to work even if you don’t change anything, because you have the power.

        I can do it in my own comments, and I can do it in yours, Nameless’s, Lynn’s, and Lona’s.  But I can’t do it in anyone else’s, and I don’t think they can do it themselves.

        • I Thought you meant while commenting yourself.  When editing a comment you have to use the correct HTML code.  (right after href) (spaces before and after)

           target=”_blank” 01

        • JD. when I did it on Pat’s comment, I

          1 copied the url in her comment;

          2 clicked edit;

          3 highlighted the link zone (the url);

          4 when the box came up, I added url to appropriate space;

          5 clicked target box;

          6 updated.

          I’m not sure if that is the same as what TC is saying, but that is what I did.

  5. Unique visitors is up in July, which gives me a good feeling.

  6. Thanks all.  I’m not at all bothered by minor fluctuations.  I only worry when we get a downward trend.  Hugs!  17

  7. Good report for the hottest time of the year. And vacations are going on now, also.
