While not completely painless, yesterday’s repairs were successful.  The culprit was CKEditor, which has always given me compatibility issues that I could work around, until now.  In some ways, I prefer ARK, which is an improved front end for either CKEditor or TinyMCE, and I configured it for the latter.  It gives all commenters features that only administrators used to have.  However, we did lose the ability to change fonts and sizes.  I’ll look for a fix when time permits.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:48 (average 5:11).  To do it, click here.  How dod you do?

Short Takes:

From Daily Kos: Republican lawmaker Steve Scalise, who has made a career of “protecting” “traditional” marriage in the House, and the rest of his gay bashing caucus, can thank their lucky stars for the brave actions of same sex married Law Enforcement Officer Crystal Griner and Patrolman David Bailey, two AA Capitol Police Officers who took on the deranged gunman yesterday.

And, in fairness, they did.

But also in fairness, Scalise has been a leading opponent on the Hill of marriage rights for gay couples as a look at his record shows.

Scalise-

  • Authored constitutional amendment to protect marriage. (May 2008)
  • Voted NO on reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act. (Feb 2013)
  • Amend Constitution to define traditional marriage. (Jun 2008)
  • Protect anti-same-sex marriage opinions as free speech. (Sep 2013)
  • State definition of marriage supersedes federal gay marriage. (Feb 2014)

Will Scalise now “evolve” on this issue now that he owes Crystal, and her wife, his life?

In a word… No, Nevertheless, I wish him a complete recovery, followed by a 2018 election loss RESIST!!

From NY Times: The Department of Education is scaling back investigations into civil rights violations at the nation’s public schools and universities, easing off mandates imposed by the Obama administration that the new leadership says have bogged down the agency.

According to an internal memo issued by Candice E. Jackson, the acting head of the department’s office for civil rights, requirements that investigators broaden their inquiries to identify systemic issues and whole classes of victims will be scaled back. Also, regional offices will no longer be required to alert department officials in Washington of all highly sensitive complaints on issues such as the disproportionate disciplining of minority students and the mishandling of sexual assaults on college campuses.

What else would we expect from DeVos, Trump, and the Republican Party? RESIST!!

From Oregon Live: Rainbow flags, drag queens, family ties: A visual history of Portland’s Pride Parade

Click through for some great pics. Here in Portland the annual Pride Parade is tomorrow, and it will pass first four blocks west and then three blocks north of my place. Kudos to the marchers. RESIST!!

  1. 4:43  Is it Easter again already?  Did I oversleep THAT much?

DKos – I fear you are probably right.  And your wish is generous.

NYT – What can I say?  This is why she was nominated.  But if anyone wants to protest visibly, The Young Turks swag shoppe (that’s not what they call it, but it makes the point) now has “Cruella de Vos” T-shirts available.  The likeness is amazing.

Oregon Live – Kudos indeed to all the marchers, including straight supporters.  May all be in harmont.  AND may they all be safe!

Cartoon – I expect the Rethugs now want to send her back.  But making her swim?  Dayum, that’s cold!

  2. DK: Kudos to LEO Crystal Griner and Patrolman David Bailey, for saving his life. Hopefully, he will view his prejudices differently now. I believe he is still in critical condition.
NYT: Very concerning news here. This is not good. At. All.
OL: How wonderful, enjoyed reading this, and viewing the delightful pictures. Everyone is smiling! Liked the story about the two ladies (1993), of how they were both teachers, and feared losing their jobs, and wore paper bags to hide their identities the first time they marched in the parade. Next year, they didn’t. Awesome!
Cartoon: Lady Liberty arrived in 350 pieces. Her arm & torch came a decade before, and went on display at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, and then at Madison Square Park. Her arm and torch came a decade earlier to promote ‘buzz’ and raise money for the construction project. *smithsonianI wouldn’t blame her now, for running away either.
Hope that you get some rest, and enjoy your evening. Take care, and Thanks, Tom.

  3. DK: I read the article earlier today, and do hope for a change of heart!
NYT: Anything DeVose puts out will be an attack, of some sort, on public education, no matter the provided rationalization!
Oregon Live: Hoping for a day unblemished by violence.
Cartoon: If she can’t swim back, she will start wearing mourner’s bunting!

  4. Puzzle — 3:48  My mother would have loved those posies — bright yellow.  Even more remarkable, tiny flowers on an egg!  Very creative!  And no Puddy Tat, you can’t have the egg!

Daily Kos — I will not hold breath for Scalise to change his mind on same sex marriage rights, but it is ironic that an officer that happens to be a same sex married lesbian, is one of the people who helped save Scalise.  I do not condone the violence, but with any luck though, he will be defeated in 2018 mid term elections.

NY Times — DeVos is but one in the cavalcade of clowns in Drumpfenfarten’s limousine, he being the chief clown.  This is just one more example of how the right wing nut jobs are not helping the next generations to succeed.  It is their “I’m OK, screw you” attitude that is pushing the country closer into 3rd world status.  IMO, the US has lost the right to lead.

Oregon Live — A great pride (no pun intended) of diversity.  The crosswalks at Columbia and Church streets in New Westminster are painted with pride colours.  I have to go through that intersection to get to my hairdresser and seeing those pride colours always makes me happy.

Cartoon — 18 June 2017 Macron, le Président de la France, repossesses the Statue of Liberty.

    Resist and Persist!!!!

Thank you for taking the time to add the fonts and sizes TC.  I very much appreciate it.  I think I have figured out how to put a picture in the comment which is very different from what I used to do.  I used to copy paste from the library but now I have to treat it similarly to when I was writing.  In order to do that, I must post my comment then edit it, using “img” to put the picture url in place. It is more complicated, but it works. I was frustrated last night with losing my comment on top of everything else. I apologise for being a bit snippy. I was not sure I’d be able to work this today as I have a really ugly sinus headache. Even my glasses, which are very light, are too much for my face. I am going to have dinner and then go to bed.

    • Boy, do I understand sinus headache.  Totally justifies snippy – not that you were.

I’ve ben putting pictures in comments with the URL for a while now, so I am used to the new way, though it looks a little different.  And I’m pretty sure you can change the size – I haven’t tried yet – most of the newer ones I resized before uploading (though not all, so I’m grateful for the option.)

Do get rested.  It will all look better when you feel better.  The “si” from Resist can wait.

    • Go to the Image Library and copy the image location to your clipboard.  Then click the image button in the comment editor and paste the image location into the Source field.

      • I see you beat me to an explanation, TomCat. I knew that gif would come in handy someday wink.

Sorry if I sound patronizing, Lynn. I think you’re quite computer savvy, but perhaps this could clarify something for you: Select the image you want in the library with a click and then in the new window go to the field after URL on the right hand side, select that (CTRL A, or right mouse click: select all) and the bit I always forget, and then copy it to clipboard. Then continue as TomCat has instructed in the comment editor.

  5. There is a Care2 Causes story that I think you might be interested in.  You probably know about this already.

The United States’s perspectives on gender are evolving, and nowhere is that more clear than in Oregon. State officials just took the unprecedented step of adding a third gender option to driver’s licenses, allowing people who don’t consider themselves either male or female to not have to attach one of those two labels to their government identification.

The change is thanks to the activism of Jamie Shupe, a non-binary Army veteran. After Shupe pursued hormone therapy, they [they being Shupe’s preferred pronoun] decided that they didn’t feel quite like a man or woman. Accordingly, Shupe asked a judge to legally recognize him as non-binary, a request that Judge Amy Holmes Henh granted.

Since that initial court victory, several other people have come forward to receive the same recognition from the state. Rather than requiring that each individual petition the state, the Transportation Commission agreed on Thursday to make a third gender option available to everyone.

Starting July 3, drivers in Oregon will have the option to choose between F (female), M (male) and X. The state selected X as the third letter because it is already recognized internationally and by the United Nations.  …

  6. I see you also got different fonts and sizes to work now, TomCat. Great job, kudos to you.

DK: Of course Scalise will not see the error of his way. As a true Republican he’ll never be able to see past his deeply ingrained biases and bigotry, or, like Officer Crystal Griner did, just do the job at hand as well and fairly as your can, irrespective of who’s at the receiving end. If Scalise is ever informed of the marital status of Griner, he’ll pretend he hasn’t heard and continue his career as anti-librul-gay-rights politicians.

NYT: As if the dumbing down of the general American population by cutting down all educational budgets with the exception of those for elitist schools for those kids whose parent can afford to buy them a place into the system isn’t bad enough. Now students are also left open to abuse of their civil rights by discrimination, physical and mental abuse by other students and teachers, and sexual assault. Yes, Betsy DeVos is certainly doing her level best to make America great again, if only for the affluent white minority.

Oregon Live: The Dutch LGBT community has been celebrating Pink Saturday since 1977 in different cities all over the country, but most people are more familiar with the Gay Parade on boats going through the canals of Amsterdam. That parade was often very over the top, but has toned down a bit since politicians/cabinet members have joined with boats in the parade. The organizers keep trying, but so far haven’t managed to get our King and Queen to join in the fun on the royal boat. They keep insisting because the LGBT community is part of “the king’s people” too. I hope Portland’s Pride Parade this year again will see another great day of harmony, peace and above all, enormous pride in all who are part of it. I’m sure the police force will keep all Republicans safely at bay.

Cartoon: France may give her asylum when persecuted Lady Liberty makes it to her shores again. The vetting may be tough, though: she’s hardly recognizable, having lost all her shine and luster and her reputation has been terribly damaged in recent years. 01
