  1. Not the marker headstone I wanted to see when I clicked into Politics Plus… sigh…

    .

  2. In 100% agreement. We need to stop agonizing and start organizing. I am trying to stir up support for a coalition to resist the Trump regime, but so far haven't had much luck. Maybe the reality of what is coming in less than three weeks will get people interested in my second round.

  3. Yes, Rest in Peace. Sad!

  4. There are many demonstrations being organized for the 20th.  I am too old and too mobility limited to take part in person.  Incidentally, there are still petitions for Keith Ellison to become the chair of the DNC; I received two links this morning:

  5. I do fear there are very dark days coming.

It still is just too much to grasp – it boggles the mind.  I hope Hillary – and Bill – are doing OK.  I can't imagine the sorrow they must be dealing with.

  6. Oh, GEEZ! WE MUST!

    RESIST!!!

  7. Is it maybe time to become liberal zombies, rise out of the ground kicking and screaming, and

    RESIST!!!

  8. "Oh, show me the way to the next whiskey bar, oh don't ask why, oh don't ask why? For, if I can't find the next whiskey bar, I tell you I must die, I tell you i must die!" I will resist, but damn, this sucks!  And, there goes Mr. Empty "teasing" about knowing things "…other people don't know…," about the Russian impact on the election.  What a farce!

    • Mahagonny  Great show.  Did you see the version on TV, several years ago now, with Patti Lupone and Audra MacDonald (who sang the song you quote)?  Yes, that is exactly what the new administration will be building – maybe with even less fun.

  9. I've never seen so much gloom and depression in New Year's wishes before, and that's not only in those from my American friends. But, while I'm more of  a 'the glass is half empty' sort of person myself, I also know that things will only get that bad if we let them.

So don't bury America, or the world, before its time. It hasn't kicked the bucket yet and may yet be restored to full health if we unite and put our backs to it. Remember there are more people who want it otherwise, and they are the best of people. So join Freya's coalition of resistance, or join one near you or create one of your own if there isn't one. Get yourself to Washington on the 21st if you can…Get active on PP. But don't accept those who sit on their backsides lamenting, get them to:

    ACTIVELY RESIST!

  10. This is from the Penzey's spice company I like that is also politically involved…. I was not aware of this issue they talk about in Wisconsin –  This reminds me so much of Nazi Germany blaming the Jews for everything….I'm sharing, one for awareness and two, because it shows what can be done… and maybe three,  one of you has a recipe to share!

"What we learned here firsthand was, in order to do away with what was good, they first needed to dehumanize those working on the front lines to protect that goodness. The first time any of us here in Wisconsin heard they were trying to blame the collapse of the economy on "the greed of teachers" we laughed. We thought it was a joke. Trust me, it was anything but. This was all years in the planning. In the coming months, as their well-built echo chamber repeated and amplified, repeated and amplified, even teachers who knew from a lifetime of experience that they had the support and admiration of the entire community began to doubt that very support. That doubt did not get there by chance. That doubt was the key of their plans.

I still kick myself for not acting sooner, but we did act, and for not understanding the depths of what we were up against, we did good. By July, against the right's echo chamber campaign of "the Greed of Teachers," we had big "Support your local Teacher" ads running in the local newspapers. We sent emails. We gave away lots of Teacher Gift Boxes. We knew that those Teacher boxes, coming from a parent of a student or a family member/friend, would do the greatest good. But we also knew ground zero for this "Greed of Teachers" campaign was the Milwaukee Public School system. On the very first August in-service day, we had a Teachers box with its Spices, Teach pin, Teachers Care bumper sticker, and Teach Heart story/recipe booklet waiting on the desk of every teacher and support staff person in the entire MPS system.

Back then, we really didn't know how well planned out this attack on public education was. I really thought this was just politicians being really out of touch with how life works. I thought they had no idea they were playing with fire, that they didn't understand that if you destroy the morale of Public School Teachers you will collapse the very schools the vast majority of our children depend on. Of course that was actually their goal from the start. But, sometimes the best laid plans fail. The morale of MPS teachers did not collapse. Far from it. Teachers, like pretty much everyone who lives their lives to help others, are strong people. By the holidays, the echo chamber of the right had moved on to other targets.

Teachers send thank you notes. Lots came individually through the mail or were personally dropped off in our local stores. One day a really-really big bag of thank you notes arrived from MPS. Reading through these amazing letters I found three from different teachers at different schools, but each told pretty much the same story. Before our box showed up, with all the very loud anger coming from the different pieces of the right's echo machine, these three teachers had all arrived at the point where they dreaded being invited to social events. With how the anger was reverberating, they avoided gatherings for fear of someone asking them what they did for a living.

Each told that, with receiving their Teacher gift box, the power of the right's drummed-up anger ended. And yes, they liked using the Spices to cook, all three had their own use for the bumper sticker, and by the time each first pinned on the Teach pin they knew they were back in the game. But for each of them, what really made an impact was the Teach Heart story/recipe booklet. As much as they may have begun to doubt themselves, it was reading the stories of teachers who may have come from different backgrounds from their own, but who shared their goodness, their decency, their humanity and their desire to live their lives setting better futures in motion for their students that put their doubts to rest.

The stories of cooks, at least the way we see them, super-humanize. If it looks like you, or someone you know, are going to be standing in the way of the new administration, we need your story, and a recipe or two, and this time we can't wait until July. No doubt public school teachers will once again be on the front lines of the right's anger echo chamber, but we're thinking this time it won't be just teachers, and this is why we are asking for your help. This year, the list will be long, and we would like to get a leg up on any direction it could head. Clearly this time around the targets are the environment, immigration, gender equality, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, income inequality, and pretty much anyone who is in any way a minority in any shape or form.

If you, or someone you know, is on the front lines of one of these issues and have a good recipe or two to share, please contact us at editor@penzeys.com, and tell us a little about your background and your concerns. And please, don't think your experience needs to be dramatic, or that you need to have some sort of job title to participate. It's the every day decency of cooks that carries the day, not fame or celebrity."

  11. Thanks all.  I'm still reacting with frustration
