Other than having to haul out three garbage bags full of used barf bags from last night's debate, it's been a light day so far, but that will change.  This afternoon, I have an unusually large order of groceries to be delivered shortly, and I have to put them all away.  Later Wendy is coming to steam clean the TomCat and help with housework.  I think I'll serve her refritos, chips and salsa for supper.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today's took me 4:19 (average 5:53).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From Daily Kos: Being Not Donald Trump is going a long way to making Mike Pence look sane and sober this year, but there’s a reason Trump chose Pence and Pence accepted the offer. He’s an extremist himself, even if he’s better than Trump at difficult things like not attacking a former Miss Universe over what she weighed in 1996 or hinting at the assassination of his political opponents. Pence, as a video from Planned Parenthood (watch below) makes clear, was the early leader of the campaign to defund Planned Parenthood. That’s part of a long, ugly record of trying to pass laws to control women’s bodies:

  • Repeatedly voted for the Federal Abortion Ban, a law that criminalizes some abortion services, with no exception to protect a woman’s health, and carries up to a two-year prison sentence for doctors.
  • Voted in favor of a bill that would criminalize a doctor for the reasons a woman seeks abortion care. […]
  • Repeatedly cosponsored legislation that would, if it went into effect, make abortion illegal nationwide in almost all cases and ban some of the most common forms of contraception, stem-cell research, and in vitro fertilization. […]
  • Repeatedly voted to allow hospitals to refuse to provide emergency abortion care, even when a woman’s life is in danger.

As governor of Indiana, he signed a law that would force women to carry non-viable pregnancies to term.

Pence is as much a poster child for misogyny as Rump Dump Trump.

From The New Yorker:

The Republican Vice-Presidential nominee, Mike Pence, stunned a national television audience on Tuesday night by using his opening statement in the Vice-Presidential debate to beg the nation’s private sector for a job.

Shortly after the moderator, Elaine Quijano, told Pence that he had two minutes to make his statement, the Indiana governor looked directly into the camera and said, “I’m going to get right down to it. If you run a company and you’re watching this right now, I beg you from the bottom of my heart to consider hiring me. I need a job and I need it bad.”

Pence urged employers to consider his many qualifications and to ignore his role in the 2016 Republican campaign. “As God is my witness, I take no responsibility for this dumpster fire,” he said.

Stressing the urgency of his situation, Pence said that his political career was in ruins and pleaded with employers to visit his LinkedIn profile.

Dang, Andy!! He sure should have done just that!!

Somewhere, a Republican watched this and is angry, because everyone got served in the end, and one might actually be gay.

  1. 5:28  Pretty, smells nice, attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, but is toxic.

DKos – I feel like this is preaching to the choir – but it's well reasoned and well said and I hope will make it to the public.

New Yorker – The job he is looking for is President in 2020.  And he did everything but say it openly.  Or so I hear.

KPDF – Boy, that was fast.  You posted at 1:21, it's now 1:30 your time, and it's already removed by the user.

Update – It's now 1:50 and it's gone from HuffPo, it's gone from Advocate, it's gone from Good Food (which may have the best all-around description at https://food.good.is/articles/homophobic-food-truck )

Update – Ah, you found it on CC!  Good for you!

    Cartoon – Indeed.

  2. DK: Pence is a pawn for DT. Passing this on too.

    NYer: Hilarious!!

KPDF: Unreal that this 'law' even exists, at. all. Your comment is spot on too.

    Cartoon: Yep!

Sounds like you are having a busy day there. Hope that you get a chance to relax. Enjoy your dinner, take care, and Thanks, Tom.

  3. Puzzle — 3:41  I can smell the sweet smell of that Jasmine, even from here!

Daily Kos — Ain't that the truth!  I think Drumpf and Pence are both misogynists but of differing focuses.  Drumpf is more about the sex side, the boorish side, and has adopted the Reich's form.  I think Pence is straight Reich form, old biblical form. Loreena Bobbitt would have a field day with these two miscreants.

The New Yorker — Do you really think anyone would hire him? . . . well maybe a Repubkican millionaire might.

KP Daily Funnies — Video has been taken down.  OK, it's back now!  That is funny and sad!  This HB2 in North Carolina is arbitrary and disgusting.  Send McCrory into retirement!

Cartoon — At the rate they are going, they don't have to bring it in.  They're letting it in by ignoring climate change!

"…I’ll serve her refritos, chips and salsa for supper."  The air will be positively blue afterwards and pungent.  I'm going to go use the jackhammer to chip off the stink so I can  go to physio.  I've been in bed for a week with this cold which is turning to bronchitis with a sinus infection chaser.

  4. OH, GEEZ Andy! Had me going for a second there cause I didn't see the first part of the debate! It would have made more sense than what he did for the rest of the debate!

I love that cartoon! It is absolutely CORRECT!

    Excellent post, TC!

  5. Sounds like you had a full day, I hope you had some acid reliever for Wendy after dinner.

Daily Kos:  I have friends who live in Indiana who are conservative, and they detest Pence.  This is one election that any woman with half a brain should know who to elect, and it is neither of the Republican candidates.  He makes Matt Bevins, Ky. governor not look quite so evil.  He made a big reply to the abortion question last night, appealing to his Conservative Christians.  Never mind that  Planned Parenthood servicesshow that only 3% of them are abortion related.

The New Yorker:  Andy does it again!  I read several articles to day that said Pence was auditioning for President in the next election.  I think he bombed if that is the case.

KP Daily Funnies:  That certainly made the point, and some of those people who were refused service might have had a wake up call, now they know how it feels to be discriminated against.  This is a deplorable law and I hope NC over turns it soon.

Cartoon:  They seem to have plenty of mud to sling!

  6. I read Wendy's down to fumigating you now, TomCat. That is perfumigate, I hope. And stop fattening her up with your delicious meals 😉 She's got a big heart already, you don't want it to become even bigger.

DK: As I said yesterday: Drumpf and Pence are two sides of the same ugly Republican coin. They express things differently, but it all comes from the same racist, misogynist, pseudo-Chistian core.

TNY: But Andy, I heard that Pence was really applying for a new job: "Pence for president 2020". But you're right of course, Pence is going to need some employment to tide him over the next four years.

KPDF: The Daily show sure got that one nailed: "Wow, that is so weird, it's as if people don't like arbitrary discrimination." Yet they've voted for a government in North Carolina that loves just doing that and which simply ignores that 70% of the people in NC don't like it. Time to clean out your Congress, people.

Cartoon: Mud? I would have used another word. 😉

  7. Thanks all!  Hugs!!

  8. KPDF: Now we are talkng!

DK/NewYorker: Pence is poison, wrapped in a quieter, quilted, package.  Hopefully, Andy can read the future.
