Other People’s Money

If I had a nickel for every time media has covered duplicitous Republican assertions about the Clinton foundation, I could invest the money and we could all join the 1% and commit TEAbuggery. Trump, on the other hand, not only brags about using other people’s money to enrich himself, but uses his Trump Foundation illegally to do do. Thanks to the Squatch for pointing me to the following article.

Donald Trump spent more than a quarter-million dollars from his charitable foundation to settle lawsuits that involved the billionaire’s for-profit businesses, according to interviews and a review of legal documents.

Those cases, which together used $258,000 from Trump’s charity, were among four newly documented expenditures in which Trump may have violated laws against “self-dealing” — which prohibit nonprofit leaders from using charity money to benefit themselves or their businesses.

In one case, from 2007, Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club faced $120,000 in unpaid fines from the town of Palm Beach, Fla., resulting from a dispute over the size of a flagpole.

In a settlement, Palm Beach agreed to waive those fines — if Trump’s club made a $100,000 donation to a specific charity for veterans. Instead, Trump sent a check from the Donald J. Trump Foundation, a charity funded almost entirely by other people’s money, according to tax records.

In another case, court papers say one of Trump’s golf courses in New York agreed to settle a lawsuit by making a donation to the plaintiff’s chosen charity. A $158,000 donation was made by the Trump Foundation, according to tax records… [emphasis added]

Both Tim Hayes and Lawrence O’Donnell covered this story on MSNBC. First Tim:

Then Lawrence:

You know, this is such a prima facie case, that the only way Rump Dump Trump can save himself from jail, is to win the Presidency and appoint all the people with power to punish him.

  1. t's sickening, isn't it??
This should be a BBA, imho.
I totally agree with your comment Tom.

    Thanks!

  2. As Daily Kos points out, Chris has been on fire lately, and Lawrence not far, if at all, behind. (Keep an eye on David A Farenthold too.) But I suspect it's naive to believe that Trump will ever spend so much as an hour in jail (let alone in prison.) Not with his privilege. I am actually surprised to see Cliven Bundy standing trial, and compared to Trump, Bundy is very small potatoes indeed.

Also, unfortunately, very few will regard his concept of the brilliance of "doing things with other people's money" as being in the least unethical. Look how many people trash rental properties, for instance, or damage library books, or borrow a car and drive carelessly. That's not how I was brought up. But it is all too common.

  3. And Drumpf is always referring to Clinton as "Crooked Hillary!" Ha!!! I say Crooked Drumpfmeister! Clinton is not perfect. Nobody is! I don't know if you'd call this projection by Drumpf, or if this is Drumpf fooling himself as outlined in the Alternet article http://www.alternet.org/election-2016/where-was-donald-trump-born-he-even-lies-about. Whichever, Drumpf needs to be investigated and charged and convicted of fraud or selfdealing. He is a certified ass who belongs in prison.

  4. Don't confuse this comment as any sort of statement from saying I ever liked or respected George W. Bush or Mitt Romney but there is this five pound lead weight in my stomach when I think that Trump makes both those men seem honest and trustworthy.

  5. Any of us who did this would go to jail, he will probably not get any punishment. When I think I cannot get any more disgusted with Trump, I find I am wrong.

  6. Not really surprising, none of it, including the fact that Drumpf hasn't been prosecuted for it yet. And probably never will, certainly not when he makes it to the White House. He's counting that all his crony Republican friends will let him off the hook then because the profit from that the same way he does: all their shady and crimial dealings will be whiped from the slate too.

  7. This man makes me incredibly crabby…he is such a blatantly obnoxious USER and abuser and should be in prison. Instead he walks around like King Tut – arrrgggh

  8. Thanks, amen, and exhausted hugs to all!
