The excessive heat warning in Portland has been lifted, and we have three days in the 80°s before dropping into the 70°s.  However, it will take a few days for the building to bleed off the heat.  At 6:00 AM the temperature in the hallway right outside my door was 92°, and my A/C has not stopped running full blast trying to get the room temperature down to 76°.  I have completed most of the optimizing here at the site.  This morning, I took a Lona nap, and am ready for several more.  I can’t wait for my shower tomorrow morning.  I exchanged texts with Julie.  She and Killer Dawg send greetings.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 2:25 (average 4:19).  To do it, click here. (Yum?)  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From Daily Kos: Earlier this month Daily Kos endorsed Christina Hartman for Pennsylvania’s open 16th Congressional District, part of our effort to identify strong Democratic candidates targeting GOP-held seats this year who could benefit from your support.

Hartman’s Republican opponent Lloyd Smucker has noticed, and in a new fundraising email his campaign is sounding the alarm bells to supporters. Oh noes! The radical ultra progressives are on the move!

Recently, the Daily Kos, a liberal, left wing but influential website endorsed our opponent. They only support candidates who believe the same ultra progressive agenda that they do. Their agenda is bad for America and bad for the residents of the 16th district. This endorsement will open the floodgates of financial support for her.

And may Christina Hartman boot that Republican mother-Smucker right into the unemployment line!

From The New Yorker: Calling it a “scary moment” and a “close call,” Donald Trump’s campaign officials confirmed that they had recaptured Mike Pence after the Indiana governor attempted to flee the campaign bus in the early hours of Friday morning.

According to the campaign, Pence had asked to stop at a McDonald’s in rural Virginia so that he could use the bathroom, but aides grew concerned when the governor failed to reappear after twenty minutes.

After determining that Pence had given them the slip, Trump staffers fanned out across the Virginia backcountry, where the governor was believed to have fled.

News that Pence had vanished touched off a panic in Indiana, where residents feared that he might return to resume his political career.

LOL Andy! As I see it, Pence crucified himself the minute he became Rump Dump’s running mate.

From NY Times: He led his government to a crushing defeat at the polls last October, then ceded his office to Justin Trudeau and largely vanished from public view. Now, 10 months later, Stephen Harper, the former Conservative prime minister of Canada, says he is giving up his seat in Parliament and quitting politics.

I wish I had a video clip of the Squatch doing her happy dance!!

  1. 5:00  Well, I am not competing.

How nice to hear from Julie and Killer Dawg.  Hope they're doing well.

DKos – The funny thing is, Kossacks are mostly not what I would call "radical ultra-progressives."  For those I would look at Real News or truthout.  Kossacks encompass a range, but my umbrella term would be "solid New Deal progressives."  I suppose to him, though, that is ultra.  Sigh.  Let's make sure he is "preserved" – in a glass jar (he'll need more sugar.)

New Yorker – Funny.  But they would just find someone else just as bad and twice as ugly (Paul LePage leaps to mind.  And that's  funny too.  I doubt if he is fit enough to actually leap to anything.)

NYT – Happy dance with three cats!  Although, alas, they will find someone too.  (Is there a way we could give Drumpf to the Canadian Conservative Party?)

Cartoon – Oh, yeah, they will (I assume) need that Port-a-potty because (I assume) there is a lot of beer.

    • JD, Drumpf would do really badly here (80% hate him) . . . although maybe that is your point.  I suppose he could put the Conservatives into an extended hibernation.  Maybe he'll have success putting Republicans in a state of extended hibernation . . . or better still, a state of suspended animation.

Whatever, we definitely hate him . . . there have been protests about his name on hotels etc here in Vancouver and in Toronto.  We want all traces wiped from the country.

      • Actually, Lynn, that was my point.  With him in the Conservatives, people would run from that party in droves and cement Liberal governance for at least a generation.  And you even might (I say might, but you have a better chance than we do) get him to STFU.

  2. DK: Best to Ms. Hartman, and I wish her a WIN, and the Best!! Like the description of her opponent too!!

    NYer: I wish! LOL, Andy.

NYT: Several politicians on the GOP side here, should follow suit like Harper. Wouldn't that be grand??

    Cartoon: Oh, how funny!!

Oh, how sweet that you heard from Julie and her Killer Dawg! Tell her HI and how is she doing? Hope well.
Do you have a fan that you run with your A/C? Maybe that will help too, with the heat. Enjoy your evening, take care, and Thanks, Tom.

  3. Puzzle — I'm in mourning for the beautiful little bird who will succumb to the rapacious Puddy Tat.  3:07

Daily Kos — Smucker is in a jam and seems spread really thinly.  Go Hartman!

New Yorker — Too bad he didn't take Drumpf along and the two of them stayed "lost"!

NY Times — Many of us knew this was coming, it was just a matter of the timing of the official announcement.  I heard a while back that Harper was either joining or starting a think tank that would be heavily involved in Israel and related issues.  I was piqued when Harper managed to retain his seat, but not surprised as Alberta is notoriously conservative on a national level, even though they have a NDP provincial government which was a total surprise.  I doubt that will last for a second term.  My real happy dance was when the Conservatives were defeated.

"I wish I had a video clip of the Squatch doing her happy dance!!" — You just want to see if I can lift my size 9's aka Sasquatch feet off the ground!

Cartoon — Wouldn't an outhouse or port-a-potty be more appropriate on the back of that truck?

Say hi to Julie and her cute little mutt for me.  They were really good for you!  Temps have really dropped here today with a high of  23 C (73.4 F) and humidity of 53%.  Apparently light showers tomorrow and full out rain on Monday with a high of 19 C (66 F) but my guess it will be a few degrees warmer out by me.  I'll be busy tomorrow with taking a woman to church from a nearby care facility and then off to my mother's for the evening.

  4. DK: May the DK way prevail today!  And tomorrow, and ….

NY T: Hey, Harper, don't let the door kick you in the ass, on your way out, Ta Ta.

Cartoon: No, perhaps the port-a-potty would be most appropriate in the cab of the vehicle.

  5. Temperatures dropping and your building cooling off must be something you're really looking forward to, TomCat. The prospect has also allowed you a koala-nap, I gather. Good to hear from Julie again; I hope she and Killer Dawg are doing well and that she has no regrets about moving to the other side of the country. I can't really tell yet if the website is quicker to respond, because my own connection Down Under is more of a bottleneck than the site has ever been 😉

DK: Using the new (Drumpfian) political lingo:Republican  Lloyd Smucker really is a looser if all he he can think of is attacking Daily Kos' endorsement of Democrat Christina Hartman and not anything that's on Hartman's political agenda. Let's hope this schmuck is right about one thing though: that it "will open the floodgates of financial support for her", because, sadly, winning an election still too often is more a matter of money than of competence and agenda.

TNY: LMAO I don't have a very vivid imagination, but I could really picture Pence hiding behind the outhouse, trying to give Drumpf the slip, and then being dragged back on a leash, being berated for being "a bad boy" by Drumpf and being told that next time the campaign team would sic the 2nd Amendment squad on him.

NYT: Happy days and about time! But keep Harper under taps Canada; evil right-wingers are apt to get themselves invited into some corporation to wreak more havoc on people and then return to politics when the time feels Right.

Cartoon: Looks like the blue privy is the best thing they got on board.

  6. It was 97 degrees here today with a dew point of 80.  Our electricity went off at noon and didn't come back on until 6;30pm.  It made me realize how much I love AC.  I hope Julie and Killer Dawg are doing well.

Daily Kos:  I hope his rant is enough to give her a further boost in the ratings and she wins by a landslide.

The New Yorker:  Andy is so funny!  I agree with you, Pence can kiss his political career bye bye.

NY Times:  Maybe we could get Harper to invite Trump to go on an AMAZING VACATION with him.  They would have a YUGE time.

    Cartoon:  Perfect!

  7. Thanks all.  Exhausted hugs!
