Thou Shalt Not Steal!!

Yesterday evening, I had the misfortune of turning on the TV to MSNBC, who was spending far too much time covering the Rectumite Rampage in Cleveland.  Fortunately, I made it to the trash can in time.  I heard several speakers. Here is the complete list of everything useful and/or honest that they said:

[end of list]

One of the low points of the evening was the speech by Melania Trump, who made it clear that intellect was not the reason Rump Dump bought her.

The centerpiece of the opening night of the Republican Convention was the speech by Melania Trump, the wife of Donald Trump. But her pleasant performance was soon overshadowed by allegations of plagiarism.

Candidate Trump, the ultimate showman, made an unprecedented and dramatic appearance on the first night of the convention to introduce his wife. Mrs. Trump praised her husband, speaking in a Slovenian accent, to an enthusiastic reception from the delegates. But shortly after the convention wrapped up she became the center of a swirling controversy. Two of the passages she read were strikingly similar to the speech Michelle Obama made to the Democratic National Convention in 2008.

“From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life,” a poised Mrs. Trump said, “that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise, that you treat people with respect. They taught and showed me values and morals in their daily life.” In her 2008 speech Mrs. Obama said, “And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: like, you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond, that you do what you say you’re going to do, that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them and even if you don’t agree with them.”

Mrs. Trump then added, “We need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow… Because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.” Back in 2008, Mrs. Obama added, “Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values and to pass them onto the next generation, because we want our children — and all children in this nation — to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work hard for them.”

Earlier in the day Mrs. Trump told NBC News that she had written the speech.

From <Huffington Post>

Rachel Maddow covered this Republican Crime in two segments.

I agree that  Melania did not know she was plagiarizing.  She isn’t that bright, and when Michelle gave that speech the most intellectual thing Melania had ever done was strut her butt with a gun next to a Trump plane.  Trump’s speechwriters put Michelle’s words in Melania’s mouth, because Melania has no story of her own to tell, other that that of a rich old man’s trophy wife.

Instead of owning up and firing a speechwriter, the Trump campaign has decided that they did nothing wrong.  The incident, they say,  is Hillary’s fault.

  1. Did you actually LISTEN to Melania’s speech?  Because I thought it was stellar.

The part where she exhorted us to “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country” struck a resounding chord in us true Americans.

And I was reaching for the tissues when she waxed so eloquent about “I have a dream …”

    😉

  2. *Nameless: Great comment!! 😉

The blame game goes round and round, from the Repugs. To them, they didn't do anything wrong. (of course!!) This is a speech worded by Mrs. Obama and it was plagiarized from a speech writer, to Melania. WOW!

    Thanks, Tom for this.

  3. My instant response was, no, not she, her writer(s).  She doesn't have enough brain to steal from the best.

But – there is a rumor that Trey Gowdy is getting together a committee to investigate Michelle Obama's plagiarism of Melania Trump, no doubt using the same time machine that Barack used to plant his birth certificate in Hawaii.

(And those who had the stomach to listen pointed out thet though they have been married, what? ten years? and have one child, there was NOT ONE personal anecdote.  Hmmmmm.

  4. Lawrence O'Donnell asked:  "The question becomes, as a potential president, what does Donald Trump do about this?  Does he have the ability to look at those 22 out of 26 words and make a logical conclusion about what happens to his wife, about that speechwriter.  What is he going to do about that?"

I tried to find comments specifically from Drumpf about the situation but all I found was that he was pleased with the speech.  However, as noted in Huff Post,

"Later, Manafort accused Hillary Clinton of manufacturing the plagiarism story.

"It's just another example, as far as we're concerned, that when Hillary Clinton is threatened by a female, the first thing she does is try to destroy the person," Manafort said."

Personally, I put absolutely no stock in Drumpf or his campaign to tell the truth about this or anything else for that matter.  He is a known serial liar.  I don't think Melania had anything to do with the plagarism, but the campaign, in some form, did.  And Manafort's accusation of a conspiracy by Clinton is absolute crap.

Seems to me that there was another Republican candidate, Rand Paul, who plagarised entries from Wikipedia into his speeches back in 2013.  It would appear that Republicans don't have any original thoughts or ideas.

  5. LOL The Drumpfs have again got themselves a lot of air time without it costing them a cent, this time all over the world. Our national 8 o'clock news had videos of both ladies running next to each other for every passage that was identical and that seemed longer than 26 words. It was hilarious! If Americans think that there was some esteem left for the way they run their elections, the political process or the candidates in this "show", I'm sorry to disappoint them. But our laughter is getting a bit shrill; our nerves are starting to fray as we realize Drumpf could win the White House despite it all and there's nothing we can do about it.

  6. I agree, TC, Melania probably did not know she was plagiarizing, but Trump's team did.  How did they think they would get a way with this?  Of course, they are all ready blaming it on Hillary!

  7. As I was togling back and forth, between the nightly news, full of the convention garbage, and PBS, last night, I ran across a moment, on the Charlie Rose newspiece, wherein a guest was saying that Romney lost, in part, because he'd alienated the Hispanic vote, and that given Rumpy's statistics, now, he will loose for similar reasons…I will add, "at least!"
