#Texit!

I have not been able to follow the Brexit news as closely as I wanted to, but felt dismayed to learn that the Brits have surrendered their prerogative to call Americans stupid, as Andy put it so well.  However there are a couple silver linings.  First, the UK Tory government is toast.  More important the secessionist seditious Republicans in Texas want to follow suit.  That’s the one really good thing for the US!

They’re at it again. Sarah Palin was encouraged by the Brexit vote to call for the US to divorce the UN. But in Texas, they aim for something bigger.

Never mind that the United States Constitution forbids it: Inspired by Brexit, the Texas Nationalist Movement [Republican seditionists delinked] wants to #Texit. Just as Donald Trump failed to realize Scotland did not vote to leave the EU, Daniel Miller, president of the TNM, doesn’t seem to realize that not only do most Texans not want to leave the Union, but they couldn’t if they wanted to…

Miller irrelevantly lamented to news.com.au,

“The vast majority of the laws, rules and regulations that affect the people of Texas are created by the political class or unelected bureaucrats in Washington.”…

…Honestly, given how Texas is governed, it’s not surprising that the uneducated and poorly informed would think it’s the Federal Government and not their own Republican Party running their state down…

Republicans love the idea! Here’s a Republican fascist calling for Texit!!

Barf Bag Alert!!

There is one thing about this that boggles the mind.  If Texas secedes, they could make Rump Dump Trump correct about Mexico cooperating with the US in building a wall… a wall to surround Texas!

  1. some say this is a result of US foreign policy:

How Western Military Interventions Shaped the Brexit Vote

Michael Hudson argues that military interventions in the Middle East created refugee streams to Europe that were in turn used by the anti-immigrant right to stir up xenophobia

    • JL, The Real News is so biased that it makes Faux Noise seem Fair and Balanced by comparison.  However I think his points are valid, until he twists them to smear Hillary.  Trump would be far USexit from the planet.

  2. Of course the big stumbling block is that the EU founding document provided for this possibility and has specific procedures in place for any aountry that wishes to leave.  All Britain has to do is follow the rules.  The US has no provision for secession.  I would say that maybe that is something we should look at writing and passing – we certainly can't seem to  pass anything else.  Maybe that would fly.

    • I'm not sure, but I remember vaguely that TX retained the right of secession when it became a state originally, but may also have given up that right in return for readmission to the Union after the Civil war.

  3. There will always be those few Texans who live up to their image of 'redneck idiots'! Lord, save us from them!

    • Yes, there will!  And then there are a few who are dear to my heart.  Sadly, it's the loudest, the most foolish loudest, that get the spotlight!

  4. I made it through 2 minutes of this Texan seditionist's rambling and had my fill by then. If I understand it correctly, the US hasn't left any legal room for Texas to leave the federation, even if a referendum would get enough votes from Texans to leave, which it won't. But what if all the other states voted on booting out Texas? Would that be do the trick and be enough to cut it loose from the rest of the country and push it into the Gulf of Mexico as the graphic indicates? It would be the will of the American people then, wouldn't it. Yes, I know, it would take a bit of sculling to pry it loose and push it past Mexico, but it would save big time on a wall.

No really, Miller's plan for Texas seceding from the US is just as nasty and ridiculous as his linking the Orlando shooting to the conspiracy theory on the persecution of Christians and the murder and torture of thousands of Christian men, women and children in the Middle East and then jumping onto his Texan hobby horse. Just another attention seeker looking to make himself important in front of a half wit audience.

  5. What if we sane people in the other 49 states voted Texas out?  Would that work?

    😉

    • IANAL, so my guess is no better then anyone else's.  But my guess would be that if the Constitution is silent, then MAYBE something could be worked out.  If the Constitution explicitly prohibits leaving, we'd be out of luck.  Even if the Constitution is silent, the very least that would be required would be an Act of Congress.

  6. Well listening to Miller required a Texas 10 gallon hat . . . er… uh, barf bag!

I seem to recall from a discussion a few years ago that Texas receives more in transfer payments rom the fed than it gives to the fed in revenues.  Am I correct?  If so, how does the TNM propose to run its own affairs?  Add on top of that, all the current federal facilities that would close leaving how many thousands of people unemployed.  Sure some would get work through the state but how would they be paid?

To compare this idea of secession to Brexit is ridiculous.  They are quite different in my mind.  The only commonality may be the degree of xenophobia in the Brexit group and the TNM.

This is the most lame ass idea to come out of Texas, even more so than a certain former president with the initials GWB.

“If Trump fails #Texit seems to be our best remedy.”  — Let the Texit group have Drumpt.  They deserve each other.

So right you are in your second para.  Love the hobby horse!

  7. GULP!!
This was mentioned and brought up before, in the legislature, re: seceding. (I think). Abbott…who wanted to rewrite the U.S. Constitution a while back. Lord have mercy, Abbott and Co., are all idiots, imho.

Maybe I'll go move in with my daughter, she lives in CA.  LOL.

    Thanks, Tom for this.

  8. Can we keep Austin?

  9. I like Nameless and LOna's ideas. Let them go!
