Most of the time, when we talk about NJ, my birthplace, we’re talking about one of the most corrupt politicians in the country.  I’m speaking of Chris Cristy, aka PIGnocchio, of course.  Fortunately, PIGnocchio isn’t all NY has to offer.  Cory Booker appears to be a rare and endangered species in US politics: an authentic Christian.

0813CoreyEvery day we see and hear lawmakers and people of ‘faith’ using the word of God to hurt others. These hypocrites spew hatred and pass laws against women, blacks, Muslims, LGBT, Hispanics, the mentally ill, the disadvantaged, and the homeless. Yet, if we look at religions, we find most originate in love. Over time, the positive messages of those religions have been twisted and interpreted to fit the selfish and extremist agendas of those who use religion to hate, bully, abuse, and kill others.

In his quote, self-proclaimed Christian and Democrat Cory Booker sums up religious extremists and hypocrisy in a way that’s hard for anyone to deny.

Don’t speak to me about your religion; first show it to me in how you treat other people.Don’t tell me how much you love your God; show me in how much you love all His children.

Don’t preach to me your passion for your faith; teach me through your compassion for your neighbors.

In the end, I’m not as interested in what you have to tell or sell as in how you choose to live and give.

Cory Anthony Booker is a U.S. Junior Senator from New Jersey. He attended Stanford University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in political science and a Master of Arts in sociology. Later, Booker earned a Rhodes Scholarship to attend the University of Oxford. Upon returning home, he received his Juris Doctorate from Yale Law School.

The Senator from New Jersey is a pro-choice, pro-LGBT advocate who actively supports education, saving the environment, voting rights, and the disadvantaged. Now a vegan, Booker is also an animal rights advocate. You can follow Booker via Cory Booker on Facebook and/or @Cory Booker on Twitter…. [emphasis original]

Compared to Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christians (the polar opposite of authentic Christians), his love shines brightly.  Their faith is defined through the vehemence of their hate, the corruption of their greed, and the dishonesty of their dealings.  Booker is certainly a refreshing change!

  1. If I recall, Cory was not the most liberal candidate in the primary, but when he won that, I supported him for the general, and have kept being pleasantly surprised by what he is into.  And, yes, this is a splendid article about a splendid and, as you say, all-too-rare position.

  2. I read this article just before the phone rang and had said to myself that TC can't miss this one and then I came here and found it again!

  3. Wow! I didn’t know that there was any of those, um, Christians left! He is absolutely one-of-a-kind! We better clone him while he is still able to talk! Someone will be trying to “convert” him to their “kind” of Christianity!
Kudos to Corey Booker for being an original Christian!

  4. The important thing about Cory Booker saying this is that he practices what he preaches. These are not empty words. Remember the snowstorms in Jersey and how he would be out shovelling wwalks for people?

  5. A refreshing sound indeed. Of course Cory Booker is not a Republican, he couldn't possibly be with "enlightened" views like that, so sadly the Republicans will have all his excellent and true critique slide off them like water from a duck's back. You know I'm not a great fan of religious politicians – in any country – but for this man I'm willing to make an exception as long as he tries and use his knowledge and understanding of Christianity to teach the GOP-Christians a lesson.

  6. Cory Booker is a surprise for me. I did not realize of his deeply held beliefs. Booker certainly does not go-round espousing his viewpoints as do the fake pseudo- christians. While Booker is not an outright liberal, he is progressive in his viewpoints. I have signed many of his petitions via emails.

Another surprise was learning of his educational background. He attended Stanford University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in political science and a Master of Arts in sociology. Later, Booker earned a Rhodes Scholarship to attend the University of Oxford. Upon returning home, he received his Juris Doctorate from Yale Law School.

Cory is so much better than "PIGnocchio"! By Far!

  7. I very much appreciate Cory Booker's words.  They describe how I try to live, and I learned that from my paternal grandfather.  I wrote a fairly long poem about him with theses lines

“His faith does not jingle jangle

like loose silver in a pocket,

    but rather enwraps another

    as a comforting hug.”

I don't always succeed, but I keep trying.  I venture to say I succeed more often than not.  Cory Booker would probably say the same.  And these words aptly fit Jimmy Carter too!

As to the Republicanus/Teabaggerum, they jingle jangle!

  8. I really enjoyed reading this about Sen. Booker.  He lives by example, does not bluster about religion as the pseudos do, there are few like him in politics.  Wish he were my senator.

  9. I saw this too and was delighted to see it here too on PP, thanks TC.  God bless and protect Cory Booker, it is about time that Christians (and others) the world over who care for others stood up and told the insane Right Wing that what they are howling on about is not Christianity – just as all the other extremists in the world pretending to have religion should be told by their faith members to shut up and start living their faith by helping others.
