Yesterday I went into the prison to do volunteer work.  I had had almost no sleep, because the night before was so sticky.  The temperature was in the high 90°s and very humid.  The room in the Activities section, where we met, has no A/C and no ventilation.  It is directly above the prison bakery.  I suffered.  My guys were wonderful and most appreciative, even though my participation was moistly passive.  On the way home, my friend stopped at a branch of my bank for me to withdraw money.  I was so exhausted that I put my credit card in the ATM, when I intended to use my debit card,  I didn’t understand why the PIN for the debit card didn’t work, and when I tried again, the ATM ate and shredded my credit card.  Then I realized what I had done and used my debit card to withdraw funds.  I felt like a total idiot! Without my credit card, I am virtually home bound.  It will take 8 – 10 business days to get it replaced, so I have to reschedule three medical appointments I had set for next week.  I’m completely exhausted.  However, I do have one piece of good news, one of my guys, who is now in his 30s and has been in prison since he was 17, has given me permission to share some of his writing with you.  I consider him a far more talented writer than I am, so you guys are in for a treat.  But today, I just need to recover.

  1. 4:26.  You need some of the energy that contraption generates.  Poor baby.

I was tickled to see in Daiy Kos that Shakespeare MAY have smoked pot (details in USA Today and in the Telegraph) – it's been found in some broken pieces of pipe that were found in his garden.  Of course that doesn't mean he personally was the smoker necessarily, but it's a lovely thought.  http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/08/11/1411021/-Cartoon-Shakespeare

That led me to a link on Shakespeare and the urrent crop of Republican presidential candidates.
    http://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/hell-is-empty-and-all-the-devils-are-here-a-shakespearean-guide-to-the-2016-republican-primary

    Donald Trump
… many a man hath more hair than wit.

    And many more.

    TC, do get some rest!

    • Loved your links, Joanne; especially the second one was a good start of my day. All quotes spot on or very funy indeed:

      George Pataki

      [Enter Ghost]

      • Yes, [Enter Ghost] got a snort from me too.  But I liked them all.  The only one I didn't quite grasp was (as Les Beastiables now calls her) Carly Ferretina.

    • The Shakespearean quotes for the Republicanus/Teabaggerum candidates is quite good.  I like that set forth for Sott Walker

O, what a goodly outside falsehood hath!

    • Ditto what Lona said.  I loved Sweeney's post, clicked on Like on FB. I hope I get their posts now.  Thanks.

    • Shakespear is even funnier, when you undertstand Elizabeathen smut.

    • Thanks for the links – gloriously funny and utterly apt quotes (though it is hard to have one quote per person when I do feel they are all appropriate for them all)….

  2. Oh you poor pussycat. Exhaustion and the slow creeping up of years and a helpful hand by Murphy certainly got the better of you yesterday, TomCat. I think most of us have been there one time or another, due to those advancing years, I mean, so don't feel like an idiot, it happens to the best of us. But the repercussions of the ATM eating your credit card are quite grim for you. It coinciding with three medical appointments next week is a touch of Murphy intended especially for you.

I hope you got your appointments rescheduled satisfactorily and that you'll be able to use the "house arrest" to recover from the exhaustion and treat us to some of the writing of your guy. I'm really looking forward to that.

But for now, resume your cute pose on the couch and have one of my Australian strength naps.

    • Lona, I really don't think I suffer from creeping senility.  I've always been heat sensitive.  Half our CoDA group did not attend because of the heat.  Thanks for the nap.  I REALLY needed it.

  3. It seems to me that your credit card compamy should be able to "issue" you a new number electronically and overnight a card to you.  8 to 10 business days is unacceptable.  Look for a new credit card company.

  4. Going to bookmark this one in case I need a good example of the old aphorism:

    "No good deed goes unpunished"

Take solace in the knowledge that the work you do is important, worthwhile and appreciated.  (But sadly, it won't buy you a burger or a cup of coffee.)

  5. 2:59  Fortunately, I got it in gear!

  6. Here's a petition I received today re Netflix  which was part of an Open Thread earlier in the week.  You've probably seen it, but just incase http://act.weareultraviolet.org/sign/netflix_leave/?t=1&akid=2239.887939.dnTkMa

"Netflix just announced that its employees will get unlimited maternal and paternal leave.

One, big and terrible caveat: Netflix's DVD division, which is made up of lower-wage workers, isn't eligible. Yet this benefit is made available to employees making as much as $300,000–not the lower-paid employees who need parental leave the most."

  7. Well I hope you are taking it easy in this heat Puddy Tat!  Here was a high of 33 C (91+ F) and is 30 C (86 F) right now.

Tonight is supposed to be the height of the Perseid meteor shower.  It hopefully can be seen at http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html

  8. You really had a horrid day, now wonder you are pooped.  I hope you are cooled off and rested by now.

  9. Sorry about your day, TC. Have to tell you about mine. Had to do some shopping and was stopped in one of the parking lots by two gentlemen who had to tell us they liked our 'Go Bernie' bumper sticker. So wonderful to see him gaining in poularity everywhere!

Will try to rest up tomorrow for my big day Friday! Whoo-Hoo ~ am looking forward to being able to see. Even if it's only out of one eye. Aargh!

  10. I'm back!

Shades of Netflix!  I was cruising through Huff Post and found this piece.  I found it hilarious, especially the last one.  Enjoy!

    • Speaking of hilarious – how long we're you going to hold back on sharing this gem of a political ad for Canadian Parliament by one Wyatt Scott

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DG6fhub9HDQ

Riding a flying goose, single-handedly slaying a dragon, saving a damsel, destroying galactic aliens with his laser eyes … boy, you just don't see ads like THAT down here.

Well, we did have Carly Farina's "Demon Sheep" and Christine O'Donnell's "I'm Not a Witch" ads – but nothing of the breadth of Scott's ad.

      • I saw a still of 'man riding goose' in the Huff Post but did not look further.  At a quick glance, I thought it was an advertisement for a new movie.  That should amuse some of the people in the Mission Matsqui Fraser Canyon riding which is a bit east of me.  I rather doubt that he'll be working in Ottawa come 20/10/15 but good luck to him.

Canada has had some, shall we say, outrageous political aspirants.  Back in the early 90's, magician Doug Henning ran for the Natural Law party aka Yogic Flyers.  Check out Henning doing some yogic flying in this picture https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug_Henning#Political_career  .  He did not do well.

We have some colourful aspirants but we don't necessarily vote them into office.

    • Lynn, that was funny!

  11. We've all had our days of "forgetfullnes" of one kind or another. lol.

  12. Wow! TC, you poor thing! I wish that I could send you some of our cool air up THERE! We have been in the 80’s, which is unheard of in August in Oklahoma! We are usually in the 100’s AND humidity in the 75% range. We call it “Air You Can Wear”! And we usually do “wear” it in sweat and dust!
Sounds like you have a great bunch of guys and they are good for you!
ATM cards are nothing that I will mess with! They always get ate when I try to use them! LOL!

  13. I hope the days to come have fewer headaches

  14. TY TC – sorry about your credit card – but hooray for keeping to your principles!
