The good news is that I enjoyed the first glimmer of the Holy Ellipsoid Orb.  Viking fans should feel blessed.  The bad news is that a surprise heat wave has hit with temperatures in the 90°s for at least today and tomorrow.  Of course it has come just in time to coincide with  my voluntee3r day in prison.  While discretion might trump valor sufficiently for me to take the day off, my friend has her cancer surgery a week from tomorrow, so this is probably my last chance to work with my guys, until my three day volunteer trip late next month.  Discretion be dammed.  I’m going.  I’m also running late due to prep work for that, and  I got a late start too.  Thanks Lona.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 2:54 (average 5:46).  To do it click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From The New Yorker: Tempers flared in the aftermath of Thursday night’s Republican debate, as rival candidates accused the billionaire Donald Trump of failing to back up his misogynist slurs with concrete and workable anti-woman proposals.

Florida governor Jeb Bush and Wisconsin governor Scott Walker led the charge, as both of them asserted that Trump’s sexist rhetoric paled in comparison with their own strong records of opposition to women’s rights.

Andy is spot on again. Any Republican who would win the Presidency would put all of Hairball’s misogyny into practice, and then some.

From NY Times: A day of peaceful protest commemorating the killing of Michael Brown, an unarmed black 18-year-old, by a white police officer one year ago ended in gunfire late Sunday as multiple shots rang out on West Florissant Avenue, the commercial district hit by rioting last summer.

A St. Louis County police officer was involved in the shooting, which occurred at about 11:15 p.m., after coming under heavy gunfire, the department said in a post on Twitter. Another department post said, “At least 2 unmarked cars took shots.”

First, I condemn this attack on police officers in the strongest possible terms. That said, I’m not at all surprised that it happened.

From Think Progress: After Jake Tapper, host of CNN’s State of the Union, asked Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina about Netflix’s announcement that it will offer a year of unlimited paid family leave, the former Hewlett Packard CEO said she opposes any requirement that employers offer their workers paid leave.

“I don’t think it’s the role of government to dictate to the private sector how to manage their businesses, especially when it’s pretty clear that the private sector, like Netflix…is doing the right thing because they know it helps them attract the right talent,” she said. “I’m not saying I oppose paid maternity leave. What I’m saying is I oppose the federal government mandating paid maternity leave to every company out there. [emphasis added]

First, Netflix does not offer family leave to employees in it’s DVD division. Second, the family leave (up to 12 months) Netflix offers other employees is NOT paid. Having exposed Carly’s Republican lie, let me point out that she stands in the forefront of the Republican War on Women.

  1. CARLY FIORINA: “I don’t think it’s the role of government to dictate to the private sector how to manage their businesses…."

Well, then Carly, I don't think it's the role of the private sector to dictate to the government how to manage its business.

Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander, so let's just BAN all those high-paid lobbyists that the private sector sends to Washington to tell the government how to manage its business.

Oh, and all that money the private sector will save by not having to pay all those Gucci-loafer lobbyists?  "Redistribute" it to the worker-bees who actually produce something.

  2. 3:20  Looks like TomCat took a bite out of the butterfly's wings.

  3. 3:48 (average 5:46)  Probably a little lightweight for lunch.  Looking at the average – yesterday and today – maybe there are some new people playing.  If so, good luck to them, and may they enjoy it as much as we do!  And their times will definitely get better.

    New Yorker – No kidding.

NY Times – While I agree with you in condemning shooting at police – well, I posted this comment this morning on a Daily Kos article:  "There are articles and comments all over the internet and in other media about how black people wouldn't get shot if they didn't put themselves into situations of confrontaion with law enforcement officers, or if they 'didn't get into trouble.'  It appears to me that almost any of such articles and comments could be recast to demonstrate that law enforcement officers wouldn't get shot at if they simply had the sense to stay out of trouble.  If you have been acting like a bully for years, decades, and you know that people know it, why would you put yourself into a situation where the odds are overwhelming you are going to get shot at?  The words "agents provocateurs" come to mind.  Perhaps the protest would have been totally non-violent if the police had just stayed home."  Incidentally, when I went to look it up to quote here, this is what the person just before me had said: "I would really like to be clear about that.  Which is to say: I would really like to live in a world where I don't have reason to react to 'officers say the man fired at them' with 'yeah officers say a lot of things, don't they.'  (I'm not saying I'm convinced they're lying this time, but as has been pointed out, it's early yet.)"

Think Progress. – It used to be called the "queen bee" syndrome.  It goes back at least as far as Queen Victoria, and I wouldn't be surprised to find it traced to the Empress Matilda.  Just another manifestation of privilege.

Cartoon – I must protest your stigmatizing these creatures as Republican when they clearly demonstrate more compassion and cooperation than you will ever see from Republicans.  They look brighter than most if not all Republicans, too.

    • I agree–what I don't know is whether shots were before or after the peaceful crossing of police barricade and sitting on the ground.

  4. Me, I'm just going to mention local sports just now since the construction site of Sacramento's controversial new arena had a fire reported on the radio on my way home a bit ago.

  5. New Yorker: While Donald Trump is all "mouthy", Florida governor Jeb Bush,  Wisconsin governor Scott Walker and Ohio governor John Kasich have put into place, laws and policies, to take away women's rights in their states.

Carly Fiorina: The Glass-Steagall Act needs to be applied to her mouth. "“I don’t think it’s the role of government to dictate to the private sector how to manage their businesses…."

Cartoon: "No wonder you're constipated! You've got all those GOP/TP/Koch heads stuck in there"

  6. Sorry about the heat wave again.  You are right to go with your friend, who probably needs your support.

The New Yorker:  Ain't that the truth! I agree with your assessment.  If the GOP had paid as much attention to the economy as they have female reproductive organs the country would be prosperous again.

NY Times:  Will this never end?   I saw on the news that some changes have been made in Ferguson, but so many years of racial profiling is not going to go away in a day.   I agree, I don't support firing on police officers, either, nor do I support looting and burning, but the people in Ferguson have obviously reached the boiling point after so many years of silence.

Think Progress:  I doubt I could agree with anything Carly Fiorina says.  She almost bankrupted HP, and went after the employees there at every opportunity.   Frankly, I am amazed she has the nerve to even run for the nomination.

Cartoon:  I love this and wish I could share it on Facebook.  I am taking a break from any political posts on there since two of my friends who don't even know each other had a fight on my page.

  7. Puzzle — 2:48  Nah Jerry!  That's just the lingerie look of her wings.  No butterfly fricassée for Puddy Tat tonight!

The New Yorker — WRT misogyny, Trump, as despicable as he is, is a light-weight.  After all, Bush and Walker have been in a position to create misogynistic laws that affect hundreds of thousands of women. Trump is still taking babysteps picking off women one at a time.  May none of them show up at the White House suitcase in hand.  I do think Andy is dangerously close to reporting the news again.

NY Times — It is apparent that Ferguson police have not learned a damn thing in the past year.  By just showing up, they provoke a reaction, the kind of reaction they supposedly don't want.  They should have allowed people to peacefully protest instead of antagonising them.  It would also appear that U.S. Attorney Richard Callahan has not learned anything either.  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/ferguson-protesters-deray-mckesson-and-johnetta-elzie-arrested_55c8f42ee4b0923c12bdb0a2?kvcommref=mostpopular

Think Progress — According to the most recent NBC poll, Fiorina elevated her status at the debate.  There's no accounting for taste.  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/chris-weigant/new-poll-shakes-up-gop-ra_b_7968588.html

"Measured by standings alone, there were two clear winners of the first Republican debates: Ted Cruz and Carly Fiorina. Cruz improved his standings from 6 to 13 percent, a whopping 7-point gain. Fiorina did almost as well, vaulting her way into the top tier with a 6-point improvement, moving from 2 to 8 percent. Fiorina, in one night, moved from eleventh place all the way up to fourth . . ."

Cartoon — The proctologist has just diagnosed a severe case of republicitis in the patient and is attempting to remove the blockage.

  8. You're welcome, TomCat. And good luck with your volunteer day. I'm sure your guys appreciate your decision Don't forget to cool down properly as soon as you get back home.

The New Yorker: Andy found another marvelous way of showing what hypocrites these Republican clowns are when they decry Trump's misogyny. They don't know the meaning of the word and even less how to spell it, but their disdain for women easily tops Trump's. Like Jeb, they only denounce it because 53% of their voters are women and somehow the clowns think that these women are going to vote for them if the call Trump out on the his exist rhetoric. More fool them.

NY Times: From what I've seen here on the news, the situation around the shooting is very murky again. I'll reserve judgment until more becomes clear, But the statements from the police about what happened sure do not impress me and I fear some police officers just couldn't help themselves…

Think Progress: Carly Fiorina is nothing more than the token woman and everything she says about the position of women in American society just makes that more clear. She's up in the polls now, so the GOP can't dismiss her just yet, but if she becomes a threat to some of the popular "guys", the GOP will do everything to boot her as soon as possible. And don't get me started on this Netflix pampering of their "talented" only…

Cartoon: I agree with Joanne, these social monkeys do not be deserved to be called Republicans, they're nothing like them.

  9. Gotta run  Hugs!

  10. Great stuff! Gotta go!
