The onset of cooler weather started on a down note.  My Firefox crashed, and I was up most of the night trying without success to repair it.  IE11 is not as bad as earlier versions, and I’m stuck with it for the time being.  I’m bleary eyed, but I have to wait for Store to Door to deliver groceries and put them away.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 4:04 (average 5:10).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From Daily Kos: Oliver Willis dug up a letter Jeb Bush wrote to the men who orchestrated the smear campaign against then-presidential candidate John Kerry. The letter (seen below), from the desk of the Governor of Florida, was a personal thank you for helping to re-elect his brother.

0722letter

This shows what a hypocrite Strike Three is, considering his current condemnation of Hairball’s attacks on McConJob’s service.

From NY Times: Slamming the Obama administration for failing to penalize cities that shield illegal immigrants, congressional Republicans on Tuesday started to pursue legislation that would withhold federal funds from these so-called sanctuary cities.

The House is expected to vote this week on a bill that would bar the Justice Department from giving grants to cities that refuse to comply with federal immigration enforcement officials, a measure that Republicans hope can bridge the reopened chasm within the party over immigration as they try to avoid alienating Hispanic voters.

If this is what Republicans and consider a position that avoids alienating Latinos, they are sure to do so.

From Crooks and Liars: For anyone that missed it, there were competing rallies this past weekend over the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina Statehouse at the state capitol, with members of both the Ku Klux Klan and the New Black Panther Party in attendance.

From this, one thing is clear. SC has no shortage of Republicans.

We need one for Republicans.

  1. 4:11 (average 5:10)  A fishing village – but I'll bet all the bustle has scared them away from the harbor and into the open sea.  Oh, well.  Maybe pasta.

TC, you probably don't look at Care2 "Causes" much, and I have seen others post that they have given up on it, but I still look at the headlines in the newsletter, even if I seldom read further.  I did read this and thought it right up your alley.  http://www.care2.com/causes/open-doors-in-a-maximum-security-prison-why-this-counterintuitive-approach-works.html  Of course you may have already seen it at the original source, but I hadn't.

Daily Kos – And I'll bet he would not realize how hypocritical it is even if you explained it to him in words of one syllable or less.  Bu – "speak volumes about what matters more" – yeah, what matters more is lying, cheating, and stealing.  Business as usual for Republicans.

NY Times – So they think they can avoid alienating Latino voters by systematically targeting their relatives, and not only relatives, but anyone who has a shred of compassion for their relatives.  I have some relatives I am not crazy about, but I would certainly not go this far to hurt them.

Crooks and Liars – Oh, medical science, redirect your research, please!  What this country needs more than anything is attitude transplants!

Cartoon – We HAVE Pied Pipers leading rats, lots of them, Donald Trump is only the latest.  Trouble is, they are not leading them AWAY.  That's what we need.

    • Thanks for the link, JOanne.  If my nephew had been able to continue his GED classes while in jail, he might have been able to attend more college courses.  Instead, he had nothing to do all day but feel sorry for himself.  Thankfully, he got past that, but he did it himself.

    • Thanks for the link Joanne – a wonderful article!  I wrote "God bless Mr McCall and all like him – this idea is superb, and I like the fact that it is based on good behaviour, so accepting all faiths and none (and I write as a Christian).  I also love the fact that those in BLIC resolve disputes rationally and verbally, and also teach each other courses on subjects from beekeeping to guitar playing, to Biblical Greek (far above what I could manage!).  All the corrections officers in the prison must welcome the program for its wonderfully calming effect.  "

It gives people hope that prison can (in the lucky cases of those exposed to a program like McCall's/TC's) come out into the world as a much better person than they went in – someone indeed who can teach us all how we should live!

    • Thanks Joanne.  Excellent article.  They remind me of my guys.

  2. I can empathize–my monitor died yesterday and in the replacement effort, my printer got disconnected…symptoms indicated it might have been even more of a problem, so I'm glad it wasn't worse.

Me thinkst Jeb has a poor memory at best and/or talks out of three sides of his mouth (have to sound like Dad, Bubba and Me)…also may consider truth, with or without a capital T, irrelevant.

Given that we were originally promised that cooperation was optional (and then became forced)–it seems the GOP do not even know much about the program they are up in arms about…and haven't a clue what would attract or repel Latino voters.

We'll see how long the legislative decision holds in SC…wonder how it will play out in their elections?

Wish PP hadn't ended his journey in DC.

  3. glad the cool weather has finally found you.

  4. …but sorry about your computer troubles.

  5. 3:34  Nice day to go boating.

  6. Jon Stewart had President Obama on his show last night! It was EPIC!
The Pied Piper would be welcome to come over here and rid our country of ALL the GOPpers!

  7. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDI-qzGPR_w

Bernie has spoken out on Black Lives Matter…

  8. A good reference to keep handy when someone a hate-mongering, loathsome racist bigoted Rethuglican starts bad-mouthing Sanctuary Cities:

    http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2015/07/sanctuary-cities-public-safety-kate-steinle-san-francisco

  9. Our weather got better too, thankfully, because my AC crashed, and due to the horrible flood last week, I can't get a repairman for several days.  I learned today that I am very spoiled.  I need AC!

Daily Kos:  Of course, he is a hypocrite!   He is Dubya's brother, I didn't expect anything else from Jeb.

NY Times:   The Republicans don't know what to do about Latinos and probably never will.  This is probably good for the Democrats, since we have such a large number of Latino voters now.  I am surprised that one of them has not referred to the "wetback" provision issued years ago.  Going after the sanctuary cities is not going to help them.

Crooks and Liars:  What else is there to say?  Nothing.  I have mentioned before that I grew up in a small town that was multi racial, due to coal miners being brought in to work.  Facebook friends have shocked me with their stance on this issue.  My sister was pummeled this week after she shared a post.   I had no idea so many people that I grew up with were racists.  Guess I was one of the lucky ones, my mother always taught us that all are equal.

Cartoon:  Do you think we could get him to come to D.C.?

  10. Puzzle — 2:44  Fair skies and a breeze to your back! . . . and no Puddy Tat to snatch the fish away!

Daily Kos — "This shows what a hypocrite Strike Three is, considering his current condemnation of Hairball’s attacks on McConJob’s service."  Amen!  But look at the fine print disclaimer on the bottom of the letter "Not paid for by State of Florida funds".  Does this mean that even though the letter bears the state seal, this is JEB's personal stationery?

NY Times — Now unless I am missing something, which is entirely possible today especially, this seems to be a great way to alienate the very voters that the Republicanus/Teabaggerum are trying to lure to their banner.  Such hypocrites.

Crooks and Liars — I am at a loss for words.  These KKK mongrels are a disgrace to the human race! Republicanus/Teabaggerum in deed!

Cartoon — Perhaps Trump is the Pied Piper leading the Republicanus/Teabaggerum off the cliff into oblivion!

  11. Sorry about your Firefox problems TC, thank goodness that you have the brainpower and experience to fix it!

Daily Kos – I feel sick having to see the hypocrite's words.

NYT – yes, that will offend Latinos – unless they are so Far Right that they are beyond hope.

Crooks and Liars – oh give me strength!

  12. Any chance ot doing a "Restore Point" to before Firefox crashed – especially if you did any updates?

I'm not a Firefox fan (Chrome & the much-improved IE11) – so can't really offer much beyond that.

  13. Daily Kos ~ Jebby's and the rest of them have a motto :  "All's fair in politics unless it's an attack on one of our own."

NY Times ~ Great way to win the Latino vote! Hooray, hypocrites!

Crooks & Liars ~ Larry's show was very good that night but my favorite part of the protests was this:  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/black-police-helps-white-supremacist_55ac6160e4b0d2ded39f48c6

    Cartoon ~ We certainly do!

  14. Hope you stayed awake enough to let the Store-to-Door people in and put your groceries away, TomCat. With the temperatures dropping, you'll be enjoying a catnap or two, if you have the time for them, that is.

Daily Kos: Jeb, thy name is hypocrite. I think there isn't one issue that Jeb is talking about in his campaign that he's been saying the exact opposite on earlier on. If he states X now with fervor, you can bet on it Daily Kos or any of the other progressive media in no time will dig up him selling -X with equal fervor some time ago. Jeb turns with more winds than a weathervane with climate change.

NY Times: You must be kidding, the GOP actually thinks they're going to avoid alienating Hispanic voters by withholding federal funds from these so-called sanctuary cities? They do not believe that for one moment, but have to come up with a reason for not being able to resist slamming Obama as often as possible, just to keep their extremist base satisfied.

Crooks and Liars: Some "booking error" in SC. I think there are two ways of looking at it.
1 Either the SC's state capital authorities allowed these two groups to rally at the same time in the same place because they wanted their "KKK buddies" to have a field day by provoking the New Black Panther Party members with their usual racist slurs. The SC media probably put their reporters and camera's on the other side of the square to focus on the Black Panther's angry retorts to show their republican viewers how "uncooth" and dangerous these black young men are.
    2. Or he SC's state capital authorities allowed these two groups to rally at the same time in the same place, knowing that the KKK has no shame and would show themselves for the bigoted and dumb Republicans they are abd that this would be picked up by the more progressive media.
Or just a simple booking error after all, or a bit of both? What do you think?

  15. Thanks all.  Hugs!!

  16. Hi,TC.Love from my puddy cats to yours. Quick comment  Many opposing the Iran deal have NOT read it. BUT Big  oil  would lose as Oil would becom less expensive. THEIR  lobbyist are  working their backsides off to see that this does not happen, and the money must be flowing ito the pockets of "OUR representatives.

We already have gone through a disasterous war and thousands killed.(all because of a lie and the  grab for OIL,

Hold OUR reps feet to the fire, and tell them that they at a "GOT YOU" moment. Their motivation is not peace. It IS MONEY, BLOODY MONEY!
