It’s already turning into one of those weeks, where I get to put two pounds of you know what in a one pound bag.  I won’t be covering the Butcher Bibi Show until tomorrow, as I have had insufficient time to research it.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 2:39 (average 4:42),  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From NBC: The execution of the only woman on Georgia’s death row was postponed late Monday because of a problem with the lethal-injection drugs. Kelly Gissendaner was waiting to hear if the U.S. Supreme Court would halt her execution when the Georgia Department of Corrections called it off about 11 p.m.

"Prior to the execution, the drugs were sent to an independent lab for testing of potency," the agency said. "The drugs fell within the acceptable testing limits."

But, officials said, in the hours leading up to the execution, the chemicals appeared cloudy.

This only a temporary reprieve from this barbaric state-sponsored murder.

From The New Yorker: On the eve of the Israeli Prime Minister’s address to Congress, House Speaker John Boehner used a joint press conference to praise Benjamin Netanyahu, calling him “our closest and most important ally in the fight against President Obama.”

“Even as the President threatens us with provocative acts, Prime Minister Netanyahu’s support for us has been unwavering,” Boehner said. “He understands what many of us have long known: that peace with this enemy can only be achieved through total victory.”

Netanyahu had equally high praise for Boehner, saying that “no one has been more steadfast and dedicated in the struggle against your President.”

“This foe is not to be trusted or appeased,” Netanyahu said. “Your resolute refusal to find any common ground with him whatsoever has earned my undying respect.”

As the press conference drew to a conclusion, Boehner appeared to fight back tears as he called Netanyahu “a brother in arms” in the ongoing hostilities with Obama.

Of course neither actually said that, but Andy seems to have X-Ray vision to see between their ears.

From Upworthy: When extreme belief systems are allowed to dictate our laws, it’s not difficult to end up in this kind of situation.

Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christians azre fighting to make the US like the Philippines and El Salvador. Kudos to the Center for Reproductive Rights.

  1. 3:34 average still 4:42.  Granted that I am weird in thinking vultures are cute, this has got to be the prettiest one I ever did see.

Before I start, best news I've had all day from WaPo:  "The House passed a bill Tuesday afternoon to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security for the rest of the fiscal year, sending it on President Obama for his expected signature. The measure, which has also cleared the Senate, will not target Obama's executive actions on immigration, giving Democrats what they have long demanded and potentially enraging conservatives bent on fighting the president's directives. The bill passed 257-167, with some Republicans joining Democrats in the vote."

NBC – As fast as those petition signatures built up yesterday, this could be an excuse to save their faces until they can circle the wagons, forgive the mixed metaphor.  I am sure it is temporary but we will see how long temporary gets.

New Yorker – Sorry, Andy, the guy in Utah who claimed if they adopt medical marijuana there wioll be a plague of stoned rabbits was funnier than you yesterday.  (Apparently the guy in Utah also has difficulty telling marijuana plants and okra plants apart LOL)

Upworthy – Can comments be posted on Upworthy?  I'll bet if so this video draws a lot of comments from pseudo-Christans acting like demons.

Cartoon – Isn't that the truth.  If only we could just all get along.

    • With a HUGE "THANK YOU" to Rep. Nancy Pelosi!

With any luck, we'll get her back where she belongs … Wielding the Gavel as Speaker of the House!

    • The latest on Kelly as of 10 pm Mountain:

HOPE IS STILL ALIVE – Kelly is still alive!

Very late last night, because of a problem with the lethal injection drug, Kelly's execution was postponed.

And now, all planned executions in Georgia have been temporarily postponed. [1] This is incredibly important. Brian Terrell was scheduled to be executed in Georgia one week from today.

Wow. You helped make this happen!

The right thing happened today – the question now is if the right thing will happen in the days and weeks to come.

The Department of Corrections has stated that it will resume the execution process once the analysis of drugs is concluded. Kelly, Brian, and others still face execution.

NOW is the time to keep up the pressure. Join us in calling Governor Nathan Deal and Attorney General Sam Olens first thing tomorrow morning when their offices open at 9am.

Call Governor Nathan Deal at 404-656-1776 to say you support a halt to executions. Ask him to take a stand opposing executions.

Call Attorney General Sam Olens at 404-656-3300 and tell him to stop requesting death warrants.

You can also take action right now on social media.

If you're on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, tweet and post @GovernorDeal and @Georgia_AG using the #KellyOnMyMind hashtag. Ask them to make a statement against Kelly's execution, and all executions.

Both Governor Deal and Attorney General Olens are key participants in this process.

Governor Deal has tried to wiggle out of responsibility in Kelly's case, saying last night under pressure that he does not have the authority to grant a pardon or issue executive clemency.

But he DOES have the power of influence. He is the chief executive in the state.

He appoints the Board of Pardons and Paroles, who yesterday denied Kelly's request for reconsideration of clemency. [2]

He can stand against this execution on moral grounds.

Governor Deal and Attorney General Olens can work alongside people of faith and moral courage–like all of us–who are demanding a more just, merciful, and accountable system.

Momentum is shifting in our favor and it's time to keep up the pressure. Demand a response from Governor Deal and Attorney General Olens.

  2. I read that 61 promised to stay away as of early this morning.

Did divine intervention make it cloudy?  She has been providing considerable pastoral care to her fellow inmates.

Rumblings are that someone will now try to oust Boehner…

There have been petitions to Kerry to intervene for the 17 (or is it 19?) serving sentences for miscarriages…will it come to that in the US for the first cases like that having resulted in convictions?

Rodney King led to DOJ civil rights findings against LAPD–like what are about to be released on Ferguson.  Yet things remain with grounds for concern in LA–Obama's task force spoke of independent investigations of police violence–seems critical in addition to the other requirements of DOJ's program.

  3. EXCELLENT Open Thread, TC! Love the little dirty from Andy! And the protests of the people that don’t want Georgia seen as a backwoods hick state by executing a woman are spot on! I don’t know who put up the petition to protest that, but KUDOS to them! I signed and shared it when I saw it, immediately!
Thanks for all you do and also the the people on here also!

  4. 2:53  OK Jerry and Patty, it's up to you 2 to save that vulture from becoming vulture fricassée by the claws of that puddy tat!  I was caught up in the nice colours especially around the eye which remind me of the flesh of fresh figs.

  5. Rodney King was TWENTY-FOUR years ago?  Good lord, I'm getting old!

  6. Puzzle — 2:53  OK Jerry and Patty, it's up to you 2 to save that vulture from becoming vulture fricassée by the claws of that puddy tat!  I was caught up in the nice colours especially around the eye which remind me of the flesh of fresh figs.

NBC — The Groundswell petition that JD shared on Sunday is at 81,842 and moving along much more slowly now.

Danny Porter, Gwinnett County District Attorney said : "The sentence is appropriate for the crime that was committed and the circumstances . . . and what she has done since is not something that needs to be considered. . . "

I disagree with the District Attorney's statement.  The man that actually killed Kelly's husband received a life sentence and the only reason I can see that she received the death penalty is because she masterminded the murder.  Personally, I do not believe in the death penalty and never have.  TC has often said that he knows inmates through his volunteer work who have changed for the better even knowing that they will never get out of prison.  Kelly would appear to have changed for the good and has inmates and former inmates that attest to her positive influence.  Would it not be more beneficial then to have someone like Kelly in prison helping others, perhaps even in ways that positively affect recidivism rates?

The New Yorker — I happened to catch the first few minutes of Netanyahu's speech and thought he was an obsequious little toad.  To me, it was so obvious.  Like my pappy used to say, he lies like a rug!

"…Boehner appeared to fight back tears as he called Netanyahu “a brother in arms” in the ongoing hostilities with Obama."

That wasn't the reason for the tears . . . someone kicked over his Jamesons that he had on the floor by his chair!

Upworthy — The right's fight to limit reproductive rights is nothing more than a power and control grab.  Women world wide are treated as 3rd class citizens.  As in so many other ways, conservatives are dragging humanity backwards.

Thank you Centre for Reproductive Rights.

Cartoon — We know.  That's why so many are fighting to make the Republicanus/Teabaggerum extinct!  No endangered species classification for you.

    • Forgot to mention, my Primo, who looks so much like Uncle TomCat, had to go to the vet's today and is now on anti-biotics and a pain killer.  He has a ruptured anal gland and the infection has eaten a small hole in his skin.  Ouch!  The pain has caused him to stop pooping so hopefully, with some help he'll poop on his own and avoid a rather rude proceedure, an enema.  I had very little sleep last night worrying about him, and then time at the vet's this afternoon.  Even with all that, he was purring at the vet's.  What a little trooper.

      • Hope he gets to feeling better real soon!

My cat poops about every 24-36 hours, and urinates 3-4 times a day.  (Just a year or so ago I switched to the clumping litter – and am REALLY GLAD I did!)

My vet charges ~ $50 for an acute visit.  And that includes the shot of antibiotics and the oral meds to take at home.  (He had FLUTD – Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease, which is not uncommon, especially for male cats.  But he's fine now.)

      • Poor darling Primo!   I'm so sorry for him Lynn, that really sounds painful.  He is such a wonderful chap to purr even at the vets, no wonder everyone loves him!  Prayers for his safe recovery (and NO enema!).

        • Poor little Primo. I agree about the clumping litter. I use litter made of corn and it clumps wonderfully and there is no odor. There are several brands. Avoid clay litters at all costs. Perfumes are also bad.

      • Bless him, what a darling.  I have not had a cat since I started using oxygen, but I would love to hear from anyone who has tried Cat Genie.  Of course the initial investment is high, and apparently it doesn't save that much on continuing expenses, just that you buy cleaner instead of litter, but I would expect it to save labor and stress.  Has anyone tried it or looked into it?

      • Thanks guys!  I've used clumping litter for years and like it for the most part.  He's on wet cat food right now with some mashed pumpkin mixed in which he loves.  And as far as taking his anti-biotics, I put it in my palm and he gobbles it up with no fuss.  Obviously it has an enticing smell. Even the other 2 want some but of course can't.

Have to go and feed him then it is off to physio.

      • I hope and pray Primo recovers quickly.

The one plus for us cats about clay is that we get to laugh at dawgs that it stuck in their teeth eating kitty crunchies.

  7. NBC:  I hope the petition we all signed stops this execution.  Glad to hear there was a delay.

The New Yorker:  Although neither ever said that, it is clearly what Boehner means.  As long as he is in office, another state has as much reason to be embarrassed by their representative in DC as Ky. does.  I wish he could be censured for this whole mess.

Upworthy:  I am grateful for the Center for Reproductive Rights.  I wrote to both my senator and representative in Ky regarding yet another restriction they were voting on, one that has all ready been over ruled by the courts in other states.  This is the first time that neither of them answered my letter.  I was very disappointed in both of them because they have been fair and just about other issues.  These same people who are hammering against women's reproductive rights will scream about Sharia law.  We have many things being put in motion here that reflect the same values as the Sharia.  Alabama comes to mind, since their courts upheld the ban against gay marriage today, based on Biblical reasons.

Cartoon: Yes Indeed.  I was away all day and heard no news other than what I have read here tonight.  The homeless man who was shot five times yesterday is but one example of the current state of affairs here.

  8. TY TC – hope your day improves/improved.

  9. NBC ~ We can continue to crusade to stop all executions. if someone turns their life around, it should be taken into consideration. A like sentence without a possibility of parole is a just punishment.

New Yorker ~ The way they were kissing each other's butts is a good indication that Andy did read their minds.

    Upworthy ~ Pseudo-Christian law = Sharia law.

Cartoon ~ I can't believe it's been so many years.

    • "Pseudo-Christian law = Sharia law"

You know Patty, I never really thought about that before, but I agree with you.  The punishments might be a little different but hey, if it quacks like a duck, and it walks like a duck, then it must be a duck.  If I haven't thought of it before, you can be damned sure that most of those that cry foul about Sharia law and want laws based on the Bible haven't thought of it either.

Either would mess with the separation of church and state, and both force others to believe the same dogma.

  10. Thsnkd all.  I'm pooped and running late.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
