The Republican party faces a dilemma.  They claim to be kind and gentle, compassionate conservatives, while their behavior portrays the polar opposite.  For example, Republicans are hell bent on condemning Obama for not using the word Islamic in conjunction with condemning terrorists.  Could it be that they want to shift attention away from their own terrorist tactics?

Every other year since 2003, hundreds of Muslim Texans – families, young students, community leaders – caravan in from around the state to meet on the steps of the august Texas State Capitol building in Austin. They hope to meet lawmakers, advocate for issues important to them, and just learn about the American political process.

Previous gatherings have mostly gone without a hitch, organizers say. But on Thursday, during the seventh biennial Texas Muslim Capitol Day, the hundreds who gathered were met by a group of angry protesters, who heckled and jeered the crowd as they began – as Texas political events often do – with prayer and the singing of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Emotions have run high as world events, including the rise of the Islamic State militant group and the terrorist massacre in Paris, have sparked pockets of anti-Muslim sentiment throughout the Western world. On Thursday, the protesters, about two dozen members of the Patriot Defense Foundation [Hate Delinked], shouted slogans such as “Mohammed is dead,” “Go back to Baghdad,” and “Remember 9/11.” Some of the group’s signs read "Save America, Stop Islam" and "Go Home and Take Obama with You."…

It was actually far worse than the article lets on. Rachel Maddow covered this event in detail, and others, as part of her coverage of Obama’s statement on bigotry.

The problem here is obvious. Obama seems right to us.  We are not terrorists, and America is not at war with Islam. O’Lielly and his declaration of Holy War seem right to Republicans.  The Republican Party are the terrorists, and they are at war with Islam.  Sadly, we are confronted with terrorism on two fronts, one foreign and one domestic.  The most dangerous terrorists of all are the elected kind.

  1. Given the support some in the GOP have given to home grown terrorists that planned war-like maneuvers against government forces (e.g, the rancher who refused to pay for using our land) they may be seeking misdirection by pretending that the only acts of terrorism are linked to groups claiming Muslim affiliations (not the OK bomber–that wasn't terrorism in their new definitions)….sigh.  I'm so sorry people treated the respectable group in Austin with such disrespect…

    • Most of the Republican agenda IS misdirection, that is the only way they can keep their followers.

    • JL, had I been in Austin during the rally and seen the protesters interupting this peaceful gathering, I would have moved to literally stand in solidarity withthese Muslim Americans.  I have never seen such seething hatred.  The Monster woman in the video is no Christian . . . she has no clue about the teachings of Christ. It is, IMO, as if she is posessed by evil.

    • I completely agree.  They call their terrorism patriotisn.  It is not.  It is bigotry.

  2. I don’t know how people can be so blind to their own “terrorist” actions! When they are protesting and shouting these things at people that are there to learn, its just mind boggling! Don’t they know, if the situation were reversed, they would be so much more upset than these law-abiding people are! Unfrigginbelievable!

  3. Certainly there are white people in Texas who are not bigots (many of them are on Care2.  And I believe there is one who wears pink sneakers on occasion).  But those who are – wouldn't it be nice if we could deport them all and replace them with peaceful law-abiding Muslims?  It would be such an improvement.

  4. It makes me sick to think that Obama can talk to the American people on how we can learn how to fine peace instead of always just being hateful acting like we are above the rest of the world.  And to have the republican/tea party/ hate so much they are ready to hang One of the best person who likes other people just because he is not an angry/disrespectful/money hungry/ racist jerk like them.  I agree Seth how pathetic.  I am so glad we have Rachel Maddow on Tv and Tom on care2 to let people know the truth.

  5. Apparently, to the Republicans and right wing media, freedom of religion means you can choose whatever Christian church you want.  We have a mosque in our small town that was built about ten years ago.  There were no protests, no one objected.  Now I am getting posts on Facebook nightly about the Muslims who are invading our country with evil intent.  The constant hammering by the Republicans and right wing media is convincing people that all Muslims are terrorists.  Some of the people who are sending these posts regularly see doctors who are Muslim.  I gues they just don't get it.

  6. "Could it be that they want to shift attention away from their own terrorist tactics?" — Funny that you should comment so!  I was reading another couple of articles earlier this afternoon about Obama's recent speech and the fallout from it, and thought 'you are the terrorist you lowlife'.  One article involved Yoho of Florida.  Republicanus/Teabaggerum are no different than ISIL . . . they just use different methods to kill people.

  7. God bless those racist sectarian demonstrators with every blessing – especially may they be blessed with intelligence, self-awareness, compassion and empathy, and the ability to tell when they are being lied to by their Repug masters [Sorry God  for saying this last bit- but they seem to be vastly lacking in these qualities!].

  8. Hatred of Muslims is on the rise here and all over the world. I think Murdock's minions have a hand in it if O'Lielly is any representative of them. Muslims in Norway are trying to show the world they are not engaged in a "Holy War". I wish more would speak out. Here's an excerpt from the Washington Post.

"Islam is about protecting our brothers and sisters, regardless of which religion they belong to. Islam is about rising above hate and never sinking to the same level as the haters. Islam is about defending each other. Muslims want to show that we deeply deplore all types of hatred of Jews, and that we are there to support them. We will therefore create a human ring around the synagogue on Saturday 21 February. Encourage everyone to come!"

Does this sound like a war to you?

  9. Racism, Hatred and Bigotry are alive and well, increasing exponentially with each passing  day, in USA, courtesy of the Faux Noise and the GOP/TP/Koch Party propagandists. They are solely responsible for the newly minted, named and increase of the "home-grown terrorists".

The GOP's claim of being kind and gentle, compassionate conservatives, was, at best, a PR promotion propaganda to garner more votes and from low information voters to vote for them.

Rachel Maddow gave an excellent account of this story. See videos above.
