Ginsburg on Ginsburg

It’s a rare treat to see an interview of a sitting Supreme Court Justice, especially when that Justice is the Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsberg, a frequent dissenter from the Dishonorable Injustices of SCROTUS, Republican Constitutional VD.

In a rare interview with MSNBC’s Irin Carmon, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg discussed her tenure on the court and women’s rights in America today.

Carmon — a rising star at the network who is co-authoring a book about the liberal jurist with the founder of Tumblr blog Notorious R.B.G — started off by asking the question on the minds of a lot of liberals as time ticks down on the Obama presidency: Are you planning to retire?

“I’m concerned about doing the job full steam,” Ginsburg said. “Once I sense that I am slipping, I will step down. This is a very intense job.”

Asked about her replacement, the Supreme Court justice demurred.

"My successor will be the choice of whatever president is sitting at that time," she said.

Carmon and Ginsburg talked at length about the progress that’s been made on women’s rights since the 1970s, when Ginsburg co-founded the Women’s Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union…

Rachel Maddow dedicated two segments of her show to excerpts from the interview.  Here’s the first.

And the second.

I found only one bone to pick with her.  Asked for one word to describe Chief Injustice Roberts, she said “able”.  I would have said “ideologue”… or worse.

  1. I haven't seen the videos yet, since I am on my laptop getting it ready for a trip, and with downloading in the background … well.  But when I read the one thing you disagreed on, I heard a little voice in my head – that COULD be said in such a way as to mean "he definitely has ability – it's a damned shame he misuses it."  I will watch them eventually.

Personally, I think maybe "sphincter" could also be used and would be very suitable.

RBG is one tough cookie, but tough in the good sense.

  3. She will be sorely missed when she retires.  I hope she is right in saying that we will have a Congress that cooperates again and that it happens soon.  This congress is so dsysfunctional that we are lucky if anything gets passed.

  4. When she said he is "able", I think she was just being diplomatic. After all, she has to work with the man.

  5. I do feel that this is an impossibly difficult and taxing job if you do it right (as Justice Ginsberg does) and put a lot of conscience and effort into it – I admire her immensely.  The Repugs in the job don't need to worry about this, as they appear to rule according to prejudice not law.

  6. Ruth Bader Ginsberg –

A gracious lady with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes…

  7. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is one awesome lady… ♥

  8. Justice Ginsberg has been a champion for Women’s Rights for a long time! I hope she never tires of doing the job she is, was, and forever will be, so gracefully doing for all the years! And I hope she lives forever!
