I’ll be brief today, because I have pants-load of chores to complete.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:18 (average 4:55).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From Daily Kos: For Katrina Shealy, being South Carolina’s only female state senator means facing some unique challenges. The main one seems to be fellow state senator Tom Corbin.

That’s when Corbin – no stranger to making bizarre statements –  is said to have begun needling his lone female colleague regarding her gender.

“I see it only took me two years to get you wearing shoes,” Corbin told [State Sen. Katrina Shealy], who was elected in 2012 as a petition candidate.

This was apparently an oblique barefoot and pregnant reference, and a staffer notes that "he makes comments like that all the time."

At one point in the conversation – which quickly escalated into a confrontation – Shealy is said to have angrily asked Corbin where he “got off” attacking women. […]

“Well, you know God created man first,” Corbin said, reportedly smirking at Shealy.  “Then he took the rib out of man to make woman.  And you know, a rib is a lesser cut of meat.”

He was lying when he said he wanted her wearing shoes.

From CBS: The Democratic Party has decided to hold its 2016 presidential nominating convention in Philadelphia.

"In addition to their commitment to a seamless and safe convention, Philadelphia’s deep rooted place in American history provides a perfect setting for this special gathering," DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz said in a statement. "I cannot wait to join Democrats across the country to celebrate our shared values, lay out a Democratic vision for the future, and support our nominee."

Because of this choice, expect a mass exodus of hookers from Pennsylvania to Ohio, where the "family values" Republicans are holding their convention.

From Think Progress: A Mississippi state lawmaker said he opposed putting more money into elementary schools because he came from a town where “all the blacks are getting food stamps and what I call ‘welfare crazy checks.’ They don’t work.”

In an interview with the Clarion-Ledger regarding education funding, state Rep. Gene Alday (R) stated his opposition to a push to increase funding to improve elementary school reading scores. Alday implied that increasing education funding for children in black families would be pointless.

This is how the Republican Party Reaches out to African Americans.

  1. Living in KCMO – home to more GREAT barbecue joints than anywhere else in the world – I find it hard to believe that a Southern boy like Corbin would speak disparagingly of "ribs" – especially after I saw his picture.

Then again, it's much better for ANYONE to be a "lesser cut of meat" than a Total Dick like Corbin!

  2. 4:07 average still 4:55.  Frankly, it looks scary.

Daily Kos – I agree with Hunter that whatever they are paying her, it isn't enough.  (Personally, I always thought Adam was just a rough draft.)

CBS – Yes, that may be the least toxic choice of the three cities they were considering.  I actually emailed the committee when they published the three possibilities and request votes, and said, "Could we not find a state where there has not been outrageous public police brutality against black people recently?"  I never got an answer, so I guess they couldn't.  With regard to hookers, so many are under the domination of pimps, and so many of those are underage, that it seems like a golden opportunity for the Feds to enforce the Mann Act – if they cared about anything other than abusing citizens with legitimate grievances and/or truthful information to share.

Think Progress – You know, I kind of watch for your posts, and would have been here sooner had I not been watching Verdi's "MacBeth" on PBS, which made me consider the question of which was the more Republican.  Certainly neither of them was any better at perceiving reality than this guy, Alday, is.  But I think my vote is for MacBeth on the grounds of his obsession with Banquo's descendants.  He was never able to explain why having Banquo's descendant be kings some vague time in the future was interfering with, and poisoning, his life today, but, by God, he knew it was so.  Isn't this just like Republicans and marriage equality?

Cartoon – Had this not happened, some other pretext would have started the war.  The "yellow press" (Faux Noise of the day) had set it up beforehand.

    • Shakespeare would have had a field day with Republicans.

      • Well, actually, he did.  We sometimes forget that Republicans are not solely a modern phenomenon; they have always been around; they just called themselves and were called other things.  Verdi also had a field day with them when he was writing from sources other than Shakespeare.

  3. 3:13  A very peaceful stroll in the woods!  We've been down this path before.

  4. Today is Canadian Flag Day!  Fifty years ago we ditched the Union Jack (UK) and adopted the red and white flag we all know.  I remember it wasn't easy and there was a lot of controversy.  Many at the time wanted to keep the Jack.  There were design "contests" but the red and white won out.  The 2nd choice as I remember was similar with blue bars at either end representing the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, and 3 red maple leaves in the centre.  http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/stephane-dion/canada-flag-50-year-anniversary_b_6679104.html

Puzzle — 3:13  A very peaceful stroll in the woods!  We've been down this path before.

Daily Kos — Just because "he makes comments like that all the time.", does not make it right. This idiot should be censured for his remarks.  They are demeaning, sexist and discriminatory.

CBS — So Philly it is, but please Democrats, get your shit together and fly united.  The enemy isn't the administration.  The enemy is the Republicanus/Teabaggerum!

Think Progress — Will someone take this Republicanus/Teabaggerum misanthrope out behind the shed and whoop him!  Another typical racist remark from a party of racists, bigots and misanthropes.

Have to leave to go see momma.  I'll be back later.

    • Happy Flag Day!  I do think that, along w/ your stellar and beautiful National Anthem, you have a very handsome flag.  Rates right up there with the Swedish flag (but then again, I'm biased).

      • Apparently,Lebanon and Canada are the only countries with plants on them … the flag of Lebanon has a cedar tree and Canada has the red maple leaf.

    • Cartoon — Was the Bush family or the Cheney family ever involved with the Maine?

"It has been suggested by some that the sinking was a false flag operation conducted by the U.S. This is the official view in Cuba. Cuban officials argue that the U.S. may have deliberately sunk the ship to create a pretext for military action against Spain."

They love pretexts don't you know!

      Interesting piece in Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Maine_(ACR-1)

    • Will Harper be replacing the leaf with a tar pit?

  5. Meant to note that today is Galileo's Birthday.  He was born 2/15/1564, so that would make him … well, really, REALLY old.

And I want to share one of his better, if not his best, quotes:

The Bible shows the way to go to heaven, not the way the heavens go.

  6. Daily Kos:  Grrrrr, that makes me so angry.  She should have some recourse, to have him censured at least for his disparaging remarks.   Back in the sixties, women had no recourse when a co worker or supervisor used these tactics on them, they do now, and she should use them.

CBS:  Loved your concluding sentence  We all know the Republicans are the sanctum of family values!  I hope Philadelphia is ready for the onslaught of tv reporters looking for something off to report on the Democrats.

Think Progress:  Although it is not the same thing, this sort of thinking goes on in Frankfort about the children in Eastern Kentucky.  Our school systems get much less funding than those in central Ky, where Lexington and Louisville are located.  That being said, African Americans in Mississippi should band together to support whomever runs against him in the next election and boot him out of office.

  7. Elected officials are only protected for things a part of their official duties so I wouldthink she could bring harassment claims against Corbin.

Philly is better than in AZ.  Philly has a very active Sanctuary Movement.

I think Alday needs to try to pass the tests–suspect his grade levels would have him unqualified for high school graduation today.

Thanks for the extra history Lynn.

  8. South Carolina's Tom Corbin (R) has made it onto the Asshole of the Day list.

  9. Doctor's appointment this AM. It's 11 below zero with wind chilld of 20 to 35 below.

Happy 50th Birthday to the Canadian Flag!

Daily Kos ~  God tried her hand at Mankind and made a mistake. So, she created Woman.

CBS ~ The Pope is going to visit Philly and now the DNC Convention! What a boon for the City of Brotherly Love! Shane's niece is a reporter there and is slated to cover the Pope's visit. Maybe she can get into the Convention too.

Think Progress ~ Mississippi = Red State = High Welfare?

    Cartoon ~ Interesting pretext, Lynn.

  10. Daily Kos – the dimwit sexist Tom Corbin hasn't even read the Bible – there are TWO creation legends in the Bible – presumably the first has precedence, as it appears in Genesis 1:27 "So God created humankind in His image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them" – it is only in Genesis 2: 21 – 23 there is the legend with the woman being created out of the man's rib.

Ah – have just thought – even if he knew what legend came where – he would almost certainly have not told anyone about it – those seem to be his politics.

Hope your appt went well TC – lots of prayers!

Lynn – Happy 50th Birthday to the Canadian flag too !

    • Based in  textual constructs, the second version was probably added several hunderd years later.

    • With the amount of flesh on Corbin's body, I dooubt God could even find a rib in his body to use.  I guess that is most fortunate for womankind, if you believe the 2nd version.  Personally, I go with the first.

  11. Glad to see your appointment went well, TC! Those spots. can be a bitch!
So sorry that the legislature has such dimwitted people in it! There has to be an a$$hole in every bunch!
I thought we got rid of the backwards thinking idiots! Oh, wait! I forgot that the election went the way it did! Ugh! They are the epitome of hate-filled, ignorant, sexist, and racists bunch idiots that have ever walked the Earth!
Oh, please, let them all be sanctioned and impeached!

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
