Warren on Vaccines

I have felt troubled, by the recent controversy over vaccines brought about by fools like PIGnocchio, and especially Idiot, Son of Idiot, Named after Idiot.  I had a friend tell me how dangerous vaccines have become, I explained that a duck follows Dr. Mercola (her source) around to sound the warning.  Fortunately someone else is sounding the warning far better than a duck.

Warren2Sen. Elizabeth Warren is not having any of your anti-vaxxer nonsense, or any of Sen. Rand Paul’s anti-vaxxer nonsense either. At a Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee hearing on vaccinations, Warren had some questions for the director for the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC:

“Is there any scientific evidence that vaccines cause autism?”

“Is there any scientific evidence that vaccines cause ‘profound mental disorders’?”

“Is there any scientific evidence that vaccines have contributed to the rise in allergies or auto-immune disorders among kids?”

“Are there additives or preservatives in vaccines that can be toxic to kids?”

“Is there any scientific evidence that giving kids their vaccines further apart or spacing them differently is healthier for kids?”

“Is there any scientific evidence that kids can develop immunity to these diseases on their own, simply by eating nutritious foods or being active?”

(Answer key: No, no, no, no, no, and no.)

Important questions, but one stood out: "Is there any scientific evidence that vaccines cause ‘profound mental disorders’?"

Rand Paul last week: "I have heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines."

Here she is in action:

The facts are clear.  Bringing back diseased that we have completely controlled is insane, and too high a price to pay for for a few wing-nuts to just want to inspire fear.

  1. If you haven't read this, you really must.  It is hilarious and tragic all at the same time.

  2. Well, as a pediatrician I'm well-versed in this controversy.  But to try to keep an open-mind and be truly "Fair & Balanced" I've made an effort to search BOTH side of the story.

Therefore, I'm posting a Link to a site that provides a clear, concise, pithy summary of how vaccines cause autism:

  3. Coincidental timing is not causation; and the encephalitis that went with the diseases prevented by the more recent vaccines did lead to brain damage and related conditions last century before they became our medical guidelines. Important stuff.

  4. I went to the article in Joanne D.’s comment and I was taken to Freya’s article about the anti-vaxxers. I got into the comments and LAWDY, LAWDY! What a kind of demented bunch of nutjobs! I just can’t believe how the other part (hopefully small) think in this debate!
Just a note. One of her arguments was that vaccines cause cancer, from what I could gather. My Grandma had breast cancer long before vaccines were the norm. She had it in her early 30’s and she was born in 1903. So her point on vaccines causing the outbreak of cancers has no air to float that balloon!

  5. “Is there any scientific evidence that vaccines cause autism?”

I have all respect and support for Sen. Elizabeth Warren. ❗

(Answer key: No, no, no, no, no, and no.)

  6. The study they are basing their anti vaccine campaign has been proven wrong.  It is idiotic to let a disease that we had eradicated come back.  There were no vaccines available when I was a child and I as well as my three siblings had measles. We were miserable, but luckily did not have some of the horrible side effects that we could have had.  Too much ignorance is driving the bus.

  7. Added Note:

Notorious R.B.G. aka Ruth Bader Ginsberg will be on the Rachel Maddow Show Monday Night, February 16, 2015. Tune in to see and hear your favorite SCOTUS critter.

  8. I was born well before the measles vaccine was discovered.  But I can tell you, had it been around, my mother would have had us at the doctor's toute suite.  My brother and I both had what was referred to as red measles when we were very young . . . me 3 years old and he 2 years old.  We also had what was called German measles which is now known as rubella I believe.  Add chicken pox and mumps onto all the measles and we kept my mother busy.

As someone with a compromised immune system, I dread running into a disease that was eradicated but now is making a comeback because of stupidity.  I say vaccinate your children!

Warren was to the pont and clear, vaccines do not generally hurt kids, but the diseases they fight sure do.  And as this world comes apart at the seams with war and poverty, deadly diseases will reappear.

  9. It"s bad enough you have to deal with "wing nut" parents during the flu season because they have no concern for other kids,by sending their own child to school when they have a fever.  My daughter seems to be under the wheather just about every week-end with a slight sore throat, running nose and so on.(and she has had her flu shot)   And now we have to worry about the nutty parents who seem to just have no regard and refuse to vacciaite their own children.   For all in the sake of fear and not for the child, but for their own rebelish thoughts about" Government".

  10. I don't disbelieve some kids might have negative reactions to vaccines, but history has shown we have stopped death rates on many illnesses. The 20th century saw the end to many ailments that used to kill thousands, for thousands of years. Public health and safety.
