I’m writing for tomorrow, day 29.  Because of a foul up with Fred Meyers, Store to Door cannot deliver my groceries until Friday, which sent me out into the weather to pick up food to last me until then.  Of course, that means another bad air day.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:46 (average 5:51).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From Media Matters: Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes’ 21st Century Fox owns and operates 28 stations in major media markets around the country. These stations might seem independent, but Fox uses them to push misinformation to viewers like you.

Watch this short video to see how Fox News impacts local stations:

By operating local stations, Fox News executives can transmit key right-wing talking points to large numbers of people who don’t watch cable news. And with Fox-owned stations now reaching 37% of U.S. television audiences, that’s a huge opportunity for the conservative media.

Click through for a list of cities where they’re seeking volunteers to keep an eye on them. If you don’t live there you can still help. Spread the story round.

From Daily Kos: And now, in accordance with the usual holiday traditions, it’s time for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to let the world’s slowest deliberative body know that if they can’t get the most basic parts of their jobs squared away, they may have to (shudder) cancel their pre-holiday plans

…The threat of enshrunkened Senate vacation time has been a leadership staple during the last half-decade, as the thought of personally losing vacation time seems to have become only reliable way to convince otherwise recalcitrant Republicans to keep the government funded. It’s also a great way to hear some of the most entitled people in America grouse at the inherent unfairness of having to work the week before the week before Christmas, so that ought to be good for a few quotes.

Let’s just hope that it’s also not an incentive for the Nevada Leg Hound, Harry Reid, to give away the farm.

From The New Yorker: In what some are calling his boldest executive order to date, President Obama signed an order on Tuesday that would convert a little-used government building in the nation’s capital into housing for amnestied immigrants.

Signing the order in an Oval Office ceremony, the President said that American taxpayers would finally receive some value for a building that remains empty and unused for much of the year.

Isn’t this one of the best ideas Andy has ever had? πŸ™‚

  1. 6:08 average up to 6:02.  This is a repeat, isn't it?  I remember thinking the leaves looked weird, looking it up, and "writing a novel."  There are multiple species of oak, and this is one I didn't know.

Media Matters – We must have an "affiliate."  I'm glad they aren't looking at those yet because my health wouldn't take it.  On the other hand, you could hardly tell it from cable except that it somes by antenna.

Daily Kos – A straight stick points two ways, doesn't it?  Gotta love it when Republicans suffer.  But it's also scary and dangerous.  As you say, TC.

New Yorker – Now that IS a good idea.  It would also give RBG a chance to recover more fully.  LOL.

Cartoon – I was all of four months old.  I have never known a world without the UN.

  2. A pox on Murdoch, Faux Noise, the Walmarts, the Kochs and a host of others….I'm ready to get the voodoo dolls out.

I wonder what it's like to live with Andy Borowitz?  Do you suppose he ever gets really angry?  Or does he just see the humor in things?  Whatever, he makes me smile even when he's got a good point and merely tells the truth.

  3. Sorry TC – dyslexia and migraine mean I must come back to this – love Andy's idea, it is brilliant!  Media Matters – excellent idea – get people to know where the stuff they are watching has come from!

  4. Fox News?  republian/tea party ?  Nuts on on the hill  I think they are just getting alittle to coky.  Thinking we will just believe what they are spewing out of those nasty big mouths.

  5. 3:44  Now that was a tough nut to crack!

I hope the puzzle meister, Patty, and Jerry are OK.  I haven't seen them about since 01/12/14.

  6. Ah–memory lane of local Fox (not on the list)–15-20 years ago only programming re-runs and old movies (and Elvira) and then, appearing very much like required public information announcements on health, et al, a periodic political op-ed in a video tape of station owner or manager lasting about 5 minutes on a not very controversial local issue (like a proposition for the city or county) where position taken lost by 60-80 percent of the votes…and soon a 10 o'clock local news show was introduced (network affiliates were at 11pm)…then there was the weatherman getting arrested–seems to have been related to his behavior in a women's dressing room at a dept. store…

Maybe Andy can get the 17 governors suing to gather in that building and lock the doors (while the Senate is on vacation at least)?

High school students who participate in the Model UN program better understand foreign policy than the most talkative on the subject in Congress do.

Hope weather and food issues become history soon.

  7. Puzzle — 3:44  Now that was a tough nut to crack!

Media Matters — These two, Murdoch and Ailes, should be locked up in solitary confinement for the rest of their lives.  As evidenced by US elections, he who controls the media and "information" flow controls the people.  How else does one explain people voting against their own interests?  Duped by Murdoch and Ailes. Just seeing pictures of these two induces the gag refex in me!

Daily Kos — Congress Critters (particularly Republicanus/Teabaggers) ≠ work accomplished.  I think Andy says that quite well below.

The New Yorker — Ah, Andy.  News reporting again.  Well if the Congress isn't going to work, at least one of the government's assets will be working.

Cartoon — If I remember correctly, several countries including the US, China and Russia were induced to join only after they were given permanent seats on the Security Council and veto votes. IMO, that is part of the reason that the UN has not been as effective as it could have been.

  8. You did not need another bad air day!

Media Matters:  The FCC should ban any network that deliberately gives out false information.  I don't have a Fox news station in my area, but I shared this on Facebook anyway.

Daily Kos:  I signed the petition in the article.  I hope Reid stands firm, and holds them until they do some work.  Who wouldn't want a job where you only work about 40 days a year and still get paid large salaries and have great health benefits?

The New Yorker:  This is the best idea Andy has ever had.  The building stands empty much of the year.

Cartoon:  Many of the Tea Party want us out of the UN.

  9. Thanks all.  I feel asleep at my desk and just woke up.

  10. Watch this short video to see how Fox News impacts local stations:

Fox is just a mouth piece for wealthy conservative nut jobs. I believe Faux is not allowed to brodcast in Canada due to truth issures…
