Oregon Kudos to HRC

There are very few organizations that I try to give a little support each year.  One is HRC.  I figure I owe the LGBT community a debt for the hateful way I treated some of them, before a gay man decided that he was going to be my friend, no matter how I acted, put a face on gay, and kick-started my evolution from homophobia to support for full LGBT equality.  Now HRC is paying me back.

HRC President Chad Griffin meets with LGBT champion Senator Jeff Merkley and Portland Mayor Charlie Hales, Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown, and Oregon House Speaker Tina Kotek.

Greetings from Portland, Oregon. Team HRC is here in the Beaver State rallying volunteers on behalf of the re-election of one of the greatest champions for LGBT equality in Congress, Senator Jeff Merkley. We were exceptionally proud to have been joined by other champions of equality, including Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown, Oregon House Speaker Tina Kotek and Portland Mayor Charlie Hales.

Along with dozens of volunteers, we made calls to HRC members across Oregon encouraging them to return their ballots before next Tuesday. I have to say, the energy in the room and on the phones was overwhelming. In this 100% vote-by-mail state, we spoke to so many voters who had already returned their ballots for pro-equality candidates.  Many others hadn’t yet mailed their ballot or dropped it in a ballot drop box

I could not be more delighted with my Senator.  Oregon kudos to HRC!

  1. Merkley is not only an Oregon treasure, he's a national treasure. We need many more like him.

  2. Already voted for him, naturally…..

  3. HRC is a wonderful organization. I am proud to be a member.

Our country needs more politicians like Jeff Merkley. Actually I wouldn't call him a politician because of its negative connotations. I would call him a great citizen!

  4. Merkley is indeed wonderful, and, bless his heart, favored in this election.  BTW, Patty, you can always use the word "statesman" for a great elected official like Jeff – it has not yet been tainted and is often used to highlight the difference from a mere politician.

I feel good about Merkley's reelection, and just wish I felt as good about Udall's – both of them, but especially Mark since he is mine.

  5. Merkeley does deserve kudos as does HRC.  Sen. Merkeley also has an excellent voting record on environmental issues, among other things of value to his constituents and the American people.

I am glad HRC is among the groups helping get out the vote to support worthy candidates.  I've seen various progressive across a broad spectrum of issues groups doing likewise (e.g., Daily Kos, PCCC, DFA), environmental groups, working families' issues groups, womens' groups along with the traditional unions (just saw a couple from San Jose, CA who are working to get out the vote in Michigan).

Many people have perspectives that may be based primarily on unfamiliarity and perceived difference from self fears that often disappear with experiential knowledge–one of the reasons so many coming out of the closet began to transform the national conversation.  Silence tends to preserve those perspectives and why allies should speak up; thank you TC for doing so.

  6. We need more like Merkeley.

  7. Thanks all.  Pit Stip.  Exhausted.  COPD Stable.  Lungs clear.
