Climate Week

All over the world people are protesting over the need to stop global climate change, the fact that the Republican party claims does not exist.  The overwhelming majority of the scientific community agrees, and, although it’s inductive evidence, I’ve observed the change take place locally.

Something’s happening here.

Across the globe, millions of people have come together to send a unified message to our leaders: Climate change is real, and every nation must step up and take action — before it’s too late. Today in New York City, as President Obama prepares to join more than 120 other world leaders for an historic summit on climate, thousands of Americans are taking to the street to urge action on climate change.

And I am proud to be among them.

The dialogue around climate change can often become mired in gloom and doom, which is understandable given the topic. With communities across the country already feeling the impacts — from historic droughts impacting crops, to rising sea levels threatening communities, to extreme weather or tainted drinking water — people can get down.

But here’s the good news: The political conversation on climate change is shifting in real time, and our leaders are taking notice. This shift is happening for a simple reason: Climate change is no longer an abstract issue. Because Americans can feel the effects in their communities every day, they’re coming together to make a change.

The events of Climate Week are only the beginning. This November, Americans everywhere will have a chance to participate in another historic day of action: Election Day. On November 4th, I will join millions of Americans to cast my ballot and make my voice heard, because I believe that together, our voices can make the difference…

Kudos to the demonstrators everywhere.  Although my body does not allow m,e to join you, I am with you in spirit.

  1. Same with me, TC. There in spirit, if not in body! The environment is all we have left to keep us alive! We can’t turn our backs on it now!!

  2. You know Tom if we get another Democrat in the White House things will change even more.  Climate change is a real threat to earth.

  3. Absolutely amazed – and disappointed – at how that MSM "Librul Media" TOTALLY failed to provide coverage of over 300,000 citizens marching mere blocks away from all their anchor studios addressing such a life-threatening issue!

Here's a cool drone video showing a good aerial view of the huge crowd in the assembling area along Central Park West (which becomes 8th Avenue) at about 63rd St.  (More dramatic if viewed full-screen)

  4. Another thing it is past time to realize is that we – by which I mean not (just) those present, not even just all the people of the US, but all the people of at least the developed world – have allowed corporatocracy to get to the point where it itself is virtually a force of nature. To overcome climate change (not to go back, just to prevent Earth from turning into Venus) we will need everyone, including, especially, corporations. Yet they are the ones pushing us into doom. How have we let this happen? Largely by not paying attention and by not voting. But even voting passionately in every election won't help if there are no candidates. I'm not urging people to feel the weight of the problem if it means they will give up, though sometimes it is tough to keep moving. I just think we need to be aware what we are up against.

    • I agree.  Corporate does not have to be evil.  Responsably run corporations exist.  It's the Republican plutocracy and Vulture Capitalism that is evil.

  5. Thank you for taking action to limit global warming pollution from dirty power plants.

  6. We have had the coolest summer in my memory here in Kentucky, and last year, it started snowing in October  which is unheard of. I usually don't get out the winter coat until the end of November. How anyone can deny climate change is beyond my comprehension.  I saw a brief news clip today that they are studying Mars, to see what happened to the lakes and rivers there,  could it be climate change there, too?  Hmmmm, maybe there WERE men from Mars and they destroyed their planet, too.

  7. Too bad that Harper is not attending the Climate Change Summit in New York.  Always the climate change denier and promoter of bitumen crap.  This is one more nail in his coffin.  I run into more people who are sick of Herr Harper and his conservative agenda.

  8. Thanks all.  Very busy day.
