Given the bogus media environment, in which we normally see so-called professionals allowing observable Republican lies to pass without challenge, or worse, it is indeed refreshing to see one of the networks inviting a guest to debunk those lies with factual data.  Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) did just that.

0714BorderHateRep. Luis Gutierrez patiently explained to Bob Schieffer how Rick Perry and the GOP are lying about the issues at the border.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez has been a consistent champion for immigration reform. He’s passionate and he’s great at cutting through all the nonsensical talking points Republicans have crafted about this crisis.

He appeared on Face the Nation right after Governor Rick Perry this morning to counter the ridiculous claims Republicans are making. By now, you know the talking points, but just for clarity, here they are along with Gutierrez’ response [click through]…

Gutierrez did an excellent job, but along with this article’s author, I disagree that Obama should have visited the border. His appearance there helping children would be used by coyotes to convince even more families to turn over their children for the perilous trek north.

Also note that when GW Bush, aka Neocon Nero, finally did visit New Orleans, he was not helping, as Obama is now.  He actually made the Army Corps of Engineers stop shoring up the levees and lose most of a day’s work, because they were in the way of GW’s photo-op.

  1. Very good response to the TeapublicanTs accusations. I also disagree with his assertion that Pres. Obama should have gone to the border. There is noothing he could have done there. It would have only been a photo op and he doesn't need that.

  2. First, let us remember that Pres. Obama is merely following the "Trafficking Victims Reauthorization Act" of 2005 and 2008 – BOTH signed by Dumbya Bush mandating that undocumented alien children be sent to the HHS Refugee Resettlement within 24 hours of arrival (or as soon as possible).

Second, the reason they are coming is because the children from these Central America nations face a homicide rate in their native countries that is TWICE what it was for civilians in Iraq.

Third, these children are NOT "invaders" as Louis Gohmert has called them.  They are REFUGEES!  This is NOT an "immigration" or "border" crisis – this is a REFUGEE Crisis.

Fourth, don't these Talibangelical christianists read their Bibles?  Let's revisit one of their favorite books – Leviticus – specifically Leviticus 19:34:

The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God

  4. Susan B Anthony said something like "I distrust people who are certain they know what God wants because I notice it always exactly coincides with what they want."  I really don't know what I can add to that.

  5. I saw this interview and thought he did an excellent job.  I agree with your point, the Prez should not have visited the border.  Too many so called news casters are letting the Republicans tell any lie they wish without challenging them. Bob Schieffer is one of the few I trust to call out a lie, no matter who is tellling it, and he always does it with such courtesy they have a hard time plowing into him.

  6. It is clear to me that Gutierrez knows what he is talking about.  I like how he referred to the children as refugees versus  illegal immigrants.  As to people (I use the term generously) like Oops Perry and Goh-merde, they are idiots that want to get their own way.

  7. Thanks all.  Good links! Overslept!
