I’m writing for tomorrow.  It’s late in a busy day.  Because tomorrow is a prison volunteer day, I may have little or nothing for Friday and/or Saturday, as I shall get home late Thursday night and will have missed a sleep cycle.  Day 31.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 2:55 (average 4:45).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From YouTube: The Colbert Report 2014-05-19 Elizabeth Warren

Hilarious! Did Bernie have it right or what? Warren played it great.

From Daily Kos: On Friday evening I went up to Bellingham to hear Bill McKibben speak. Bill has something fascinating to share with his audience, how Germany has reached the point where it had gotten over 74% of its electrical power from renewable sources the other day. That’s a huge milestone, and it demonstrates that renewable sources can power a large industrial nation. Germany shows us that renewables aren’t a potential source of power for some time in the future, they are a viable alternative TODAY.

I’m no fan of the German conservative government, but they do deserve kudos for this.

From Alternet: Giving out prescriptions for vibrators seems more like a doctor’s bad pick-up line than good public policy. But in Sandy Springs, Georgia, you really do need a medical reason – and a doctor’s prescription – to buy a sex toy.

Melissa Davenport, a resident of Sandy Springs, has filed suit against the city because, as her lawyer Gerry Weber  told a local TV station, the ordinance allows the government to "stick its nose in your bedroom and say you can use this but not that." Davenport has multiple sclerosis, which she says has impacted her sex life with her husband, and she credits sex toys with saving her marriage. Yet her doctors still won’t write her a prescription.

Leaving aside the bizarreness of the policy itself – people should be able to buy sex toys for the sheer fun of it – it seems ironic that a woman with a real medical condition is being denied sex toys, when you consider that the vibrator was actually  invented to cure a (fake) medical condition: hysteria.

I intend no disrespect to women here, but disrespect for the Republican War on Women.  No wonder I call Republicans the Grand Old Pussy Posse! If they spent 1/20 the time policing Banksters that they do policing vaginas, we’d be in far better shape!

  1. TY TC – couldn't watch video unfortunately.  So glad you saw the Daily Kos article on Germany having 74% renewable power, I was so impressed by that, and wish we all had governments who had done such things.  For the last 60 years or so I think the Germans have had more coalition governments than single party, and this seems to have helped them listen to voters more.  Anyway, well done Germany!

Alternet – parts of America still have the power to make the rest of the world's jaw drop in amazement, they really do!

PS voting – we have had European elections here and as I am ill and disabled and can't get out, I have had to hire a taxi to take my vote to the polling station – I hope to goodness it got there – and was accepted!  Why don't people care about voting these days, they'd soon yell if we didn't have votes!

  2. The Colbert Report Mon, May 19, 2014
I could not access the YouTube video as it had "been removed by the user"
You can access here via Hulu for free. http://www.hulu.com/watch/638345#i0,p13,d0

  3. 4:21  Running late today, not just on the puzzle.

YouTube – Saw this yesterday on Daily Kos, where it still is, and with a parial transcript.  http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/05/20/1300623/-Stephen-Colbert-on-Wall-Street-s-hatred-of-Elizabeth-Warren  Kudos to Jim for finding it on Hulu.  Yes indeed.

Daily Kos – 74% is pretty damn good for an industrialized nation.  The only place that has reached 100% appears to be Samso Island in Denmark and even it has some use of fossil fues in the transportation sector, though they are working on that.  http://ecowatch.com/2014/05/01/samso-renewable-energy-island-sustainable-communities/

Alternet – Even when it's something that is non-sexual, even when the substance or proguct has eal issues, saying "you can always get a prescription" is NEVER satisfactory, and I might point out disproportionately impacts the poor.  Not just the expense of seeing a doctor (who may not even prescrible what is needed as in this story) but the time and energy required for the extra steps.  Anyone besides me remember when spray paint was illegal?

Cartoon – Couldn't have said it better.

  4. A prescription for a sex toy?!?  You have got to be kidding.  Perhaps they should pass a law that requires a prescription for the right hand of a man (left hand if he is left handed).

  5. YouTube ~ I watched on TV and Elizabeth Warren was great. Stephen couldn't rattle her at all and she actually had to stifle a few laughs.

Daily Kos ~ Besides being years ahead in renewable (Green) energy, thy treat their workers much better too. I think their conservative is a lot different than our Wing Nuts.

Alternet ~ I bet the doctors have no problem prescribing Viagra.

Cartoon ~ We all know a bunch of them.

  6. Puzzle — 2:58  . . . and I am third!

YouTube — Well the show was not available on YouTube so I was able to pick it up on http://www.comedynetwork.ca .  I loved Colbert's line that Warren is trying to out commie the commie, Bernie Sanders.  Certainly Warren was a good foil to Colbert's shenanigans,

Daily Kos — I am sure that Canada is right there with the US in the "abysmal" category when it comes to renewable energy.

"The renewable technologies are readily available today, all that is lacking is the political will to do what we know we should do."

Harper is so invested politically in the tarsands etc that he is turning a willfully blind eye to environmental concerns.  Such ignorance!

Alternet — Grand Old Pussy Posse indeed!  Lechers!

Cartoon — If you don't vote then don't bitch!  The first step in the midterms for voters is getting their ID etc in order and the 2nd is learning about the issues, and not from Faux Noise.

  7. get some sleep on Friday, TC, we will be here when you get back.

I watched Cobert on Daily Kos.  What a ticket, Warren, and Sanders.  It will never happen, though.  I believe her when she says she isn't going to run.  She has too much integrity to say one thing and mean another.

Alternet:  Are they requiring men to get a prescription when they go to the Hustler stores? Just asking.  They are so obsessed with lady parts and lady actions, will they propose a sharia law next/  will we be required to wear veils in public, or be forbidden to go out without a male relative?

Cartoon:  We have too many of those in our country, don't vote but love to complain.

  8. Thanks all.  The meeting was great.  I had a brief Cat Nap.  New Open Thread on the way.  Good Night!
