RepublicansOnParade

Here is the thirty-eighth article in our Republicans on Parade series, featuring individuals who personify what the Republican Party has become. Today’s honoree is the unnamed Salt Lake City School District Nutrition Supervisor for taking food from and humiliating elementary school children, after they had been served.

0201UtahUp to 40 kids at Uintah Elementary in Salt Lake City picked up their lunches Tuesday, then watched as the meals were taken and thrown away because of outstanding balances on their accounts — a move that shocked and angered parents.

"It was pretty traumatic and humiliating," said Erica Lukes, whose 11-year-old daughter had her cafeteria lunch taken from her as she stood in line Tuesday at Uintah Elementary School, 1571 E. 1300 South.

Lukes said as far as she knew, she was all paid up. "I think it’s despicable," she said. "These are young children that shouldn’t be punished or humiliated for something the parents obviously need to clear up."

Jason Olsen, a Salt Lake City District spokesman, said the district’s child-nutrition department became aware that Uintah had a large number of students who owed money for lunches.

As a result, the child-nutrition manager visited the school and decided to withhold lunches to deal with the issue, he said.

But cafeteria workers weren’t able to see which children owed money until they had already received lunches, Olsen explained.

The workers then took those lunches from the students and threw them away, he said, because once food is served to one student it can’t be served to another… [emphasis added]

I understand the District has suspended the Supervisor and the Cafeteria Manager, but they refuse to identify the culprits.

You may ask how I know that the Supervisor is a Republican.  First, that’s Little Lord Willard territory.  However, on the off chance that the Supervisor is a Democrat, some behavior is just so Republican that it even makes a Democrat Republican.

  1. Piss-poor judgment, in my opinion, but a very Republican thing to do.

  2. How could people be so sadistic as to take food from children!  God grant that good comes out of evil and makes everyone who reads this story or who has experienced such injustice Left Wing for life – and politically active too!

  3. This Supervisor was obviously a Big Bully while in school him/herself. The pure stupidity of taking the lunches away and then throwing them in the trash astounds me. My jaw dropped when I heard this on the news yesterday. Wouldn't the smart action be to write letters to the parents but allow the children to eat? It was a waste of food and money because then fruit and milk were handed out to these same children. Probably more nutritious than the slop on their trays though.

    • While reading this, I was listening to a show on film music, and a line was played from "A Bug's Life" – "It's not about food, it's about keeping those ants in their place" (because they outnumber us, and if they ever find out, it's the end of our way of life, etc).  Yes indeed, how Republican.  Kind of wants to make one see the movie.  And/or issue a copy to every school child in Utah.

  4. Children who are subjected to such humiliation by any adult is intolerable – of course it's a Republican issue, but it mentors like behavior from the children who witness it and believe that bullying creates a "result"! These individuals should be fired immediately!

The parents may have been remiss, or more likely just poor, in which case the lunches should be provided for the kids anyway! Where is the justice in this behavior? AAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH! I'm so angry!

  5. P. S. There's a petition to fire the manager at Daily Kos.  Try this link: http://www.dailykos.com/campaigns/661  If it pulls up my information, change it; but I think it should work.

    One word, Unconscionable:mrgreen:

  7. What were they thinking?!?

    • That's the problem . . . they were NOT thinking!  Let's face it, the Republicanus/Teabaggers do not want students taught to think critically.  How better to demonstrate this than by having officials that have no thinking skills!

  8. What particularly galls me is the waste of these meals in the garbage when 1) there are so many hungry children; and 2) Republicanus/Teabaggers rail about wasteful spending and then waste the food.

The only "good" Republicanus/Teabagger is an unemployed Republicanus/Teabagger!

  9. I am signing the Daily Kos petition.  Any adult who would treat children this way should not be working in the school system.

  10. Thanls everyone.  Petitions signed.

    • Thanks to all who signed and referneced other petitions also – I signed those too earlier.  It is easy to get discouraged signing petitions, and I admit we have better luck with agencies and local entitles, but just when one is about to give up, one hears something like this (from Earthjustice):

~~It’s been over five years since a massive coal ash dump in Tennessee burst through a dam, destroyed dozens of homes, poisoned thousands of fish and wildlife and flattened 300 acres of riverfront property. Since then, toxic coal ash has continued to contaminate our waters, threaten nearby communities and kill local wildlife.

But just this week, the EPA finally committed to a deadline for protecting citizens from this deadly waste.

This is a huge victory for those of us like you who spent years demanding help from our elected officials. Your voices were heard, and by December of this year, the EPA has promised to act.

Not that I believe for a moment that this is going to get done smoothly without follow-up, but it is still a victory.

I have one article on this complete mess in a Utah school saved for submission.  This was not an accident, those in charge decided and then told someone to toss that food.  Maybe if the parents find their child humiliated those parents will take the little money they have and pay the school district.  From the board of education to last one on the administration chain, they should be fired.  Children without food, is not just cruel it's a true reflection of the tiny miserly minds running this school district and a total lack of empathy.

Thanks TC – sorry to be late with this one.
