Republicans have long considered themselves the party of business, just as Democrats consider themselves the party of labor.  The latter remains valid, but Republican TEAbuggery like shutting down the government and costing the nation ‘s economy #24 bullion hits business where it hurts.  Where this extremism is most apparent, such as Georgia, business donors are beginning to desert the Republican Party in favor of the Democrats.

1102NunnSigns of the Republican Party rift between business and the Tea Party are showing up where Democrats most want to see them: in the campaign account of Michelle Nunn, daughter of four-term Georgia Senator Sam Nunn…

…Nunn, 46, is running for the seat of retiring Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss, and her opponent has yet to be determined. Eight Republicans are competing in a June 3 primary, including three U.S. House members who supported the ill-fated plan to link defunding Obamacare to lifting the debt ceiling and passing a government spending bill. Their efforts led to a 16-day shutdown that Standard & Poor’s estimated cost the U.S. economy $24 billion.

In addition to Wieland, Nunn’s donors include Jim Cox Kennedy, the chairman of Atlanta-based communications company Cox Enterprises Inc., who contributed $2,600 to her candidacy, after giving $30,800 to the Republican National Committee and $5,000 to Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in 2012…

Steve Kornacki explained the Georgia race.

Now, it’s pretty apparent that, if elected, Nunn will be a DINO on more than one issue important to progressives, so why am I celebrating that possibility?  It’s simple.  We’re not going to get a progressive nominated in Georgia right now, let alone elected.  At least a DINO counts toward a Democratic Senate majority and will vote with the party more often than not.  When the choice is between Broun, Gingry and a DINO, thank God for that DINO!

  1. I agree TC.

  2. Remember the scene in _Cabaret_, where the rich German mentioned that they used the Nazis to put down communists?    With 20-20 hindsight we know how that turned out.    The 2% were using the tea baggers, but are finding that they can't control them.

And the thing is – the President and Congress that they have now are more pro-big Big-money than any others in our history.    And unlike the tea baggers, they know who their bosses are (follow the money).

    • Howard, I agree with part one of what you said, but part two id the falsse doctrine of ewuovalence.  This legislation will get stopped in the Senate, because what you said is bot true.  Democrats will stop it.  In the vouse, the overwhelming majority of Democrats voted against it.  The few that I listed are the exceptions, but you are painting the rest with their brush.

  3. Editing comments:

    Who is "Wieland"?

Unless one remembers Sam Nunn as a Democrat right off the bat, the article is unclear whether business is backing Dems or non-Tea Party Reps.

    • Welcome Clay. 🙂

Wieland is a Republican donor who contributed to Little Lord Willard's campaign.

The included video is part of the article, to which you must not have attended.  That makes the point wuite clear that Sam was a Dixiecrat.  That's before the racist wing of the party defected to the Republicans.  I state dirrectly that she is a Democrat.

  4. It's so sad that Georgia can't dig up another Jimmy Carter…but I get that even he wouldn't have a chance in the crazy climate of politics these days.

However, DINOs in General are a real threat to the Democratic Party's basic ideal. I absolutely hate Gov. Pat Quinn (D-IL.), he has done more harm to the Democrats than ex. Gov. Rod Blagojevich ever did! It took 2 trials to get Rod convicted of bogus charges…it only took one term to prove Quinn is just a stinking DINO as bad as the RepubliCONs who bankrupted Illinois for 30 freaking years before Rod!

  5. I just saw this & it proves to me that business money is surely moving to the Democrats: "..On Friday, former Republican Governor Charlie Crist filed official paperwork to run as a Democrat against Governor Rick Scott (R.). Though deeply unpopular, Scott is well funded and mud will surely fly."

I'm sure that's NOT a good thing..people are so attention deficit these days they will forget what he Really is & real Democrats will be lost..:(

    • And he's now embracing the hug with Obama, using it to help win over Democrats.

Well he has my vote as anyone would other than Tea-Bag Rick Scott.

    • Yvonne, I'm all for supporting a progressive candidate in the primary, but if it comes down to Crist or Scott, better Crist.

  6. When the choice is between Broun, Gingry and a DINO, thank God for that DINO!

"Michelle Nunn, daughter of four-term Georgia Senator Sam Nunn…"

She has my vote when I move to Georgia…. 💡

  7. A DINO is a little better than a Bugger.

  8. Sorry to all, but I think a DINO is a LOT better than replacing it w/ an "R"

    Committee Chairs

    Judicial Nominees

    Filibusters

    Etc

    Etc

After 65+ years, I guess I'm willing to swap a little purity for a LOT of practicality.

  9. Big business was also hurt by the shutdown, and they will also be hurt by the cut in Food Stamps.  Perhaps they will see the light if it is hurting their cash flow.

I hope Ms Nunn wins, I would far rather that a Centrist democrat be there than any kind of Republican.

  10. The only loyalty that business shows is to its own bottom line.  Right now, business is showing contempt for the radical right agenda because the radical right, rabid Cruz etc, lead the government shutdown and cost the economy $24 million.  That's $24 million right off the bottom line.

The Republicanus/Teabagger leadership are to the blame for this shift because they were unable to control the radical right.

A DINO is better than handing a seat to the Republicanus/Teabaggers.  But a DINO bears watching.

    • Certainly.  You can be sure that, if she wins,  there will be many occasions I will write dowm her name with a request to tear her a new one.

  11. The insanity of conservatives in the US and Canada. This is a serious problem for the citizens in North America. Big business, big corporations and big money are running the government and NOT the citizens whom elected them in the first place. People have lost sight of what is important in life and that is the freeedom to live as they wish within a civilized and democratic society. As we see currently here in Canada, Conservatism is ruining our once proud and progressive country. We have unelected and unconstitutionally appointed Senators whom have a sense of entitlement screwing the Canadian taxpayers and, in Toronto the largest city in Canada we have a real life Boss Hogg whom  has been caught with crack and crooks.

It certainly is NOT a lovely day in the Canadian neighbourhood. We have a Prime Minister who made the statement at the Conservative convention this week that if people don't agree with him or like what he says; "I could care less." This is what we have had running this undemocratic country of ours.

So where is the 99% now? What a flash in the pan that was. We must organize and get control of our countires democratically or we face a very bleak future. People were suppossedly to elect people whom they could trust to look after the interests of the "people." Then we must become more progressive and socially responsible for and consciencious of our society. Call it soft socialism if you wish, the so-called Christian Right whom have become so far right they have fallen off the scale. These people have forgotten or have not really read and studied the Bible, they should know that Christ's teachings are Socialist. He looked after the underdog, the sick and the social outcasts. Remember, Jesus became so very angry at the money changers in the Temple he tossed the tables and these crooks out of the Temple to restore it to what it was suppose to be; a place of prayer. So should we with Big Business. We cannot solely be a Capitialist Society because we end up with what we have now…a facist state. Remember post WW1 and pre WW2 in Europe? If people do not study history or are aware of history we repeat the same mistakes over and over…  Be very careful for what you selfishly wish!

    • Nancy I fully agree.  I'll let Lynn speak to Canada and harper's Harlots, but one problem is that in the US, we tend to want instant toip down.  The 99% movement wanted immediate federal reform, when what they should be doing is working bottom-up  Start by getting progressives on local school boards and county commissions and expand upward from there.

    • Hi Nancy!  I certainly agree with you.  I am finding that Canada is a mirror image of the US anymore, and the Rt disHonourable Prime Minister Twit Stephen Harper keeps looking in the mirror asking "Who's the fairest one of all?"  Trouble is, his mirror only gives him one answer, one that he is fully invested in — himself.  Want to get a feel for Harper?  Read a relatively short book (150 pages) which is very insightful "Rogue in Power: Why Stephen Harper is Remaking Canada by Stealth" by Christian Nadeau.

Harper in particular, and his harlots (the Conservative caucus), glorified Baby Bush and the Republicanus/Teabaggers.  All you have to do is look at some of the election tactics — wonky constituencies, robocall scandal, lack of promised reform (Senate) now that Harper has the reins.  He made that last one during the election campaign that first made him PM.

Like you, I would like to see Canada return to its peacekeeper roots, to its 'soft socialism' as you call it side.  We cannot afford to have Harper at the helm any longer.  2015 can't come soon enough.

I would like to see parliamentary reform and election reform and have some ideas but how to get there is another question.  I'm thinking The Council of Canadians may be a place to start.  Any ideas?
