I’m writing early for day 17, and the National Weather Service has issued a Dangerous Heat Advisory until 9 PM. 🙁

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:49 (average 5:33).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From Freak Out Nation (H/T Ellen M): Nothing says patriotism like punishing a student for singing ‘Eyes of Texas.’ That’s what Lt. Governor David Dewhurst has in mind for Leigh Larson, a leader of and organizer with College Kids For Wendy.  Larson has received notice that the Lt. Governor and Attorney General Greg Abbott may be considering pressing charges on her along with others for “disturbing the peace” and “inciting a riot.”

Dang! Had she sung ‘We Shall Overcome’, Texas Republicans would give her the death penalty.

From Think Progress: This past Tuesday, President Obama unveiled his second-term plan for cutting carbon emissions, and delivered a bracing call for the American economy to advance into a clean energy future. This past Wednesday, House Republicans responded by moving a bill out of the Appropriations Committee that would cut investments in renewables by nearly a billion dollars.

They’ll make up for it by finding a new way to subsidize polluters.

From NY Times: According to an updated analysis, the top 200 chief executives at public companies with at least $1 billion in revenue actually got a big raise last year, over all. The research, conducted for Sunday Business by Equilar Inc., the executive compensation analysis firm, found that the median 2012 pay package came in at $15.1 million — a leap of 16 percent from 2011.

That’s where the money that could be used to create jobs is going, exactly as Republicans planned it.

  1. Lt. Governor David Dewhurst has definitely has 'lost it" on the subject of arresting Leigh Larson
for “disturbing the peace” and “inciting a riot.” For Singing a song…?

After Obama made his speech on emissions, House Republicans, the pukes, responded by moving a bill out of the Appropriations Committee that would cut investments in renewables by nearly a billion dollars.

The CEO and their board of directors keep hefting their salaries, once again, with an
increase of 16 percent. The poor and middle classes keep getting poorer and poorer.

The Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty kept exterminating the human race and everything in
    the Planet from non-existence.

  2. 3:29 I rushed through this one so I could get something to eat. All that candy made me hungry!

    • 3:40  Who would have thought that a diabetic would race towards candy?!  Actually, the colours remind me of the fresh fruit sorbet that I occasionally indulge.  Given today's heat (hotter than yesterday) I think I'll take a trip to the gelato store in my air conditioned car.

  3. Freak Out Nstion ~ Dewhurst "freaked out" over the song. He doesn't like the idea of the people watching government.

Think Progress ~ GOP's motto is Think Regress!

NY Times ~ Same old, same old!

Cartoon ~ It is sad to think we live in a world where there are still idiots who want to play with fire.

  4. Puzzle — 3:40  Who would have thought that a diabetic would race towards candy?!  Actually, the colours remind me of the fresh fruit sorbet that I occasionally indulge.  Given today's heat (hotter than yesterday) I think I'll take a trip to the gelato store in my air conditioned car.

Freak Out Nation — Having watched the tape of the singing, if that is "inciting a riot", then I am Santa Clause!  She, and those there in the rotunda were exercising their constitutional right to free speech and peacable assembly.  Dewhurst and his cronies should be arrested for falsifying a legislative vote.  Dewhurst isn't interested in democracy (other than the restriction of), only POWER, CONTROL, and GREED.  The Lt Governor and all Texas Republican/Teabagger politicians are demonstrating why the SCOTUS decision on the VRA needs to be overturned (however that can legally be done).

Think Progress — Well for sure Boehner will bring it to a vote and it will pass the House.  But even though it is an appropriations (money) bill, it still has to pass in the Senate and go to the POTUS, correct.  These lame assed Republican/Teabaggers are going to be the death of the US and global security.

NY Times — . . . while many struggle on minimum wage jobs, 2 and 3 jobs yet still can't make ends meet, are unemployed and having social benefits like SNAP cut off.  There is something definitely wrong with a society that measures success solely in terms of the almighty dollar!

Cartoon — India, Pakistan and Israel never signed the treaty.  North Korea ratified the treaty on 12 December 1985, but gave notice of withdrawal from the treaty on 10 January 2003 following U.S. allegations that it had started an illegal enriched uranium weapons program,  Iran signed the treaty but was found in non-compliance with its NPT safeguards agreement and the status of its nuclear program remains in dispute.

Canada has signed the treaty but does not have, nor does it house any nuclear weapons for other nations on it's soil.  The City of Vancouver (I live in Metro Vancouver) declared itself a nuclear weapons free zone many years ago.

    • Heat?  Grrrrr!

You can't be Santa in Texas.  Ouly Republican Supply-side Santa, who takes toys from poor chilfreen and fives them to vellionaires, is allowed.

      Consider the term "Net Worth".

      Correct!

      Yea Canada!

  5. The CEO's will always be taken care of, just as our senators and representatives keep voting themselves raises while cutting funding for SNAP, Meals on Wheels, and anything else that helps the poor.

  6. Well, Chase's bottom line is looking better and better since they decided SNAP debit cards aren't enough, they need to hand out incentives to fast food franchisees to pay their employees' wages with Chase debit cards.  Of course with fees for everything.  So Jamie Dimon probably thinks he is worth it.  I won't say what I think he is worth.  Petition at http://action.raiseupmke.org/page/s/workers-shouldn-t-have-to-pay-to-get-paid?source=hem1  If it brings up my email just take it out and put yours in.
