Memorial Day

I hope you all will join me today in taking a few minutes out to remember our fallen heroes, and the sacrifices made by the families they left behind.  This does not mean we must support the wars.  I hate most of America’s wars and have opposed most in my lifetime, but those who serve didn’t start any of them.  In my opinion, it is appropriate to to hate the wars, as long as we love, honor and respect the warriors.

    Take the time to have your own private moment of silence to remember those who so valiantly have fought and continue to fight so that we can have the Freedoms we do.

    God bless all those who gave their lives and their health to preserve our way of life; God bless them all, animal and human; please remember their families too who have to cope under very difficult circumstances.  Amen.

    Pres. Abraham Lincoln's letter to Mrs. Bixby, on learning of her loss of five sons in the Civil War:

    Executive Mansion, Washington, Nov. 21, 1864

    Dear Madam,

     

    I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming.

     

    But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.
