Keeping the Urgency Alive

Yesterday President Barack Obama spoke in Hartford, CT, accompanied by eleven family members of gun violence victims.  They joined him aboard Air Force One and are coming to Washington to lobby Congress for sensible firearms regulation.  Lets start with the complete video of Obama’s speech.

Obama was right to shame Republicans for politicizing an issue on which almost all Americans agree, since the Republic an response was more pro-death sabotage from Bought Bitch Mitch McConnell.

FilibastardsSenate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said he would join a group of Senate Republicans threatening a filibuster to oppose a cloture vote if Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid moves a gun bill to the floor this week.

Reid has promised to move a gun bill to the Senate floor this week, but it’s unclear which one. It depends on whether Democrats can strike a deal on background checks on gun sales — otherwise, they may settle for a less strict bill that includes some form of background checks, increase penalties for gun trafficking and increase school security. In order to get around the filibuster, Reid has indicated that he would file a cloture motion, which would require a 60-vote margin to move the bill.

While nobody knows yet what Senator Reid’s plan is for the gun bill, if he chooses to file cloture on the motion to proceed to the Reid Bill (S. 649), Senator McConnell will oppose cloture on proceeding to that bill,” McConnell spokesman John Ashbrook said in a statement.

McConnell joins a group of 13 senators who have already vowed to block any gun legislation… [emphasis added]

That’s right.  Even though negotiation is incomplete, he and the other Republicans will obstruct the bill, no matter what it does.

Rachel Maddow covered the story well and interviewed Jillian Solo, whose sister was killed in the Sandy Hook massacre.

In short, these Republicans believe that the “right” of people to evade the law and purchase guns illegally outweighs the right to life taken from over one thousand people killed in the short time since the Sandy Hook massacre.

It is criminal that the only way victims’ families have to help fix the problem is to put their raw grief on display to shame these Republicans.  It is imperative that we join with them in keeping the urgency alive.

  1. As far as I can see the only people who support the Repuglicons demands for weapons everywhere are lunatics and psychopaths!  What is wrong with people that they allow these imbeciles to make demands like this?

  2. One of his most powerful ever —-Lets just watch now– The Repigs will not bend– their mission is to destroy– whatever would make them become reasonable at this point ? Only thing that can be done is to vote the fools out in 2014–

  3. The Insani-Tea will not end.   The jerks are afraid of threats by the NRA an  don't think twice about the danger  of  some guns to voters.

  4. Want a sad and horrifying preview of what will eventually happen if teachers start carrying guns in America's classrooms?

A pistol in the hands of a 4-year-old boy went off during a weekend cookout, killing the wife of a Tennessee sheriff's deputy who was showing his guns to a relative, state police said Monday.

    • It's a sad state of affairs when a law enforcement officer does not practce ther basic gun safety practices that I learned, ironically from the NRA, as a child.,   Learning and demonstrating such safety procedures should be a requirement to own and use firearms.

  5. Hey – I can't stand Reid – either – he's responsible for taking most of the credibility out of a weak bill – I hold him equally responsible — yeah – sure – let's get a stupid "check law" in place – it's like let's put a cookie next to your hot fudge sundae – it's next to nothing – and they'll even object to that — I don't like this country's stupidity regarding sensible laws – so I guess – let them shoot the kids and each other — and maybe for this one subject I'll be forever grateful that I live in NYC – where there's a bit more responsible gun laws than in the wild — Iwest (which apparenty includes most of the South and Mid-West) — I'll just wait for the next repellant executions and I for one will blame each of the god damned 2nd amenders – including democrats  – for each death that they decided to sign into law!

    • Lee, I was furious with Reid when he stripped the assault weapon s and oversized clip bans from the package.  I can understand him doing so, if and only if ge forces a szewparate vote on those measures.

  6. The Republican/Teabaggers are sounding a whole lot like some of the cast of The Wizard of Oz — no brain, no heart and no courage!  Only braindead, heartless people without the courage to do what is right, would entertain the idea of filibuster and obstructing any gun legislation!

I heard on the radio today that Michael Bloomberg and a "pro gun control group", possibly Mayors Against Illegal Guns, will be providing ratings of members of Congress on their gun control votes and stances very much like the NRA does.  Only difference, his will be from the pro gun control perspective.

There was a passion in Mr Obama's speech, but now I agree with Rachel Maddow that it was perhaps anger at Republican/Teabaggers making this issue a political issue instead of doing what is right.  Mind you, when did the Republican/Teabaggers ever do what was and is morally and ethically correct?  Never.

    • Everyone, I'm sirry to inform you that the lion, the scarecrow and the tim man were so angry about the insult that they mugged Lynn. 😉

      Great idea!

      I fuly agree!

  7. The NRA has gun owners scared of the Big Bad Government.  I have received some ridiculous emails and posts on Facebook from otherwise sensible people.  The Republicans will use anything to cause fear of this administration.

  8.  It is imperative that we join with them in keeping the urgency alive.

    I agree… 💡
