It is certainly welcome news that the unemployment rate has finally dropped below 8%, due to the efforts of Barack Obama and the Democratic Party.  It is especially significant, because it has happened in spite of the best efforts of the Republican Party to prevent recovery from the recession they caused.  To see their sabotage going up in smoke is so frustrating to the Republican Party, that they are screaming bloody murder and making wild conspiracy claims.

We’ve hit that moment in the election when people begin to lose their minds. Case in point, within minutes of the jobs report, Twitter filled with Republicans claiming the books were somehow cooked, the numbers aren’t real, etc.

Let’s take a deep breath. Jobs reports are about the economy, not about the election. Confusing the two leads to very bad analysis.

This is a good jobs report in a still-weak economy. The 114,000 jobs we added in September aren’t very impressive. The revisions to the last two months, which added 86,000 jobs to the total, were much more impressive. Those revisions also suggest that September’s jobs could get revised up — or, of course, down. So be careful about reading too much into that number. Still, these are, at best, good, not great, numbers.

The controversy, if it’s worth using that word, is over the unemployment rate, which dropped from 8.1 percent to 7.8 percent. That’s three-tenths of one percent. That’s what all the fuss is about.

Let’s get one thing out of the way: The data was not, as Jack Welch suggested in a now-infamous tweet, manipulated. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is set up to ensure the White House has no ability to influence it. As labor economist Betsey Stevenson wrote, “anyone who thinks that political folks can manipulate the unemployment data are completely ignorant of how the BLS works and how the data are compiled.” Plus, if the White House somehow was manipulating the data, don’t you think they would have made the payroll number look a bit better than 114,000? No one would have batted an eye at 160,000.

The fact is that there’s not much that needs to be explained here. We’ve seen drops like this — and even drops bigger than this — before. Between July and August the unemployment rate dropped from 8.3 percent to 8.1 percent — two-tenths of one percent. November-December of 2011 also saw a .2 percent drop. November-December of 2010 saw a .4 percent drop. This isn’t some incredible aberration. The fact that the unemployment rate broke under the psychologically important 8 percent line is making this number feel bigger to people than it really is… [emphasis added]

Rachel Maddow proved that Republican conspiracy theories are InsaniTEA with Jared Bernstein.

Rachel demonstrated magnificently how Republicans create an alternative universe to deceive their sheeple. Of course truth is poison to the party of Willard, Lord of Lies. On the left we have wing-nuts too, but we ignore them. On the right, they run the show. Can you believe that Welch said he was just raising the possibility? The BLS is thoroughly insulated against such shenanigans. And Kudos to Chris Matthews. Bernstein made the issue crystal clear.

Ed Schultz covered the story with Bob Shrum and Robert Wolf. He documented the real conspiracy.

Republicans decided in a closed door meeting on the day of Obama’s inauguration that to take back the White House, they would obstruct everything Obama tried to accomplish, regardless of damage they caused the economy and pain they caused the American people. Even Bought Bitch Mitch McConnell crowed that the number one objective of the Republican Party was to make Obama a one term President. To that end, they have been sabotaging America for almost four years. That is the real conspiracy here, and it’s not a theory. No wonder that Republicans have gone ballistic that there is finally evidence of some Democratic recovery to this Republican recession.

  1. The 114,000 number is the nonfarm payroll employment increase.  The drop in unemployment from 8.1% to 7.8% is a result of an increase of 873,000 in the total employment in September, over seven times the nonfarm payroll increase.

  2. What I don't understand is why the MSM immediately kowtows to the never-ending stream of Wingnut conspiracy theories and gives a forum to the crazy notion that the BLS cooked the books.

Yesterday it was a single Tweet from Jack Welch (former GE CEO who infamously cooked his own books and faced SEC charges) that sent the pundits into full-mode pearl-clutching.

Last week it was the looney idea that the Polls have been "skewed" against Rmoney.

I suppose after Obama wins re-election the Repubican argument will be that they "over-sampled" Democrats.

  3. One would think they would be happy to see the US coming out of near depression— Man am I a  dreamer!!

  4. There are also many of us, with and without party designation who have been praying for our nation. These aren't the simple prayers of church. These are fasting, giving, sharing prayers for the recovery of our economy. Give us  JOBS, JOBS….JOBS!! We are of many diverse groups and have only met a small percentage of our companions who, with us are praying and positive thinking and working to save our economy.
AND we have been working with and without pay to make those JOBS a reality. We are not only of the Christian churches, we are from every race, every creed, every economic status.  We are positive thinkers who have been meeting for months to offer, together, positive thinking, and positive action.
We give thanks to Creator as we embrace one another, knowing we still have a long way to go.  And we are going, united together.  Alone, we can do almost nothing.  TOGETHER we can save our nation, our planet, our future for our children and our grandchildre.

    So Be IT
    Amen.

    ……………………………………………………….

    • Zee, I fully agree with your sentiment and will happily embrace anyone who will negotiate in good faith to achieve those goals.  Sadly, one party is not interested.

  5. Allen West saying that the unemployment rate has been falsified by Mr Obama — isn't this the guy that accused around 80 Democrats of being card carrying Communists?

Jack Welch of GE  fame, disgraced when he was caught by the SEC of cooking the books, is accusing Mr Obama of cooking the employment figures and offers no proof of his charge, but won't take it back?

Have these two lunatics heard Rmoney's campaign team admit that Rmoney lied all through the 1st debate — what do they say to that?  They probably think it is just fine!  (Personally, with an open admission of lying to the people with malice and forethought, I think Rmoney should be dropped from the ballot!  I know he won't be and that it is up to the people to NOT elect him!)

The Republican/Teabaggers are acting like tantrum struck 2 year old children who are not getting what they want!  Next you'll see them lying on the ground kicking and screaming, just to see if that gets them any further than screaming only!  I will be so glad when the election is over, Mr Obama back in the WH, and I won't have to listen to these petulant popinjays carry on about nothing!

Send Romney, Lord of Lies, and Ryan, his little Lordette, as well as all their minions, out to the unemployment line where they belong!

    Get out the vote!!!!!

    Vote Democratic 2012!!!!!     Vote Obama/Biden 2012!!!!!

    • He's the one.

      That's right.

Lying to voters is not illegal.  It's up to voters to convict him t the polls.

They will always find reasons to throw tantrums and act like two year olds.  That's who they are.

      AMEN!

  6. Truth is a stranger to the RepublicanT-Insani-Tea party.

If something makes President Obama look good, it must be a work of fiction.
I sincerely hope & pray that we don't have to listen to the likes of Bought Bitch Mitch, Agent Orange & Rat-man Cantor any more after this election.

  7. I always picture the pubs and tbaggers squealing like little pigs taken away from Momma's teat.  EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
They think if they talk louder and longer and say the lies over and over, it will make it so.  Sadly, this will work for some. And when the President wins re-election, you can count on more eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee and lies.  I have no idea what would shut them up.
Have to say, I am waiting for that reallllllllllllllllllllly good squeal when President wins re-election.  EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Thirty days left————-we have to get out there and get the votes. Take everyone you can to the polls, make sure you are documented well, they will try to stop us any  crooked way they can. if anyone trys to stop you from voting, raise hell.
We have to win this–can you imagine Romney in the Presidency?  That should put everyone on the move !

    OBAMA/BIDEN 2012

  8. Let’s take a deep breath. Jobs reports are about the economy, not about the election. Confusing the two leads to very bad analysis.

    The CBO also reported a 200 billion reduction in expenditures…. Obama/Biden 2012

  9. The republian/tea party have gone totality "limbaugh" How could anyone not have an ounce of joy that we are finally starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel?  The racist anyone but Obama crowd. It is just sicking.  That people watch and listen to fox and limbaugh.  And the republian/tea party are just full of greed and power that they can not see pass the long and hateful noses they have.
