  1. Nice !  Thanks.

    Happy New Year !

  2. Happy New Year, TomCat !  Health, happiness and prosperity.

  3. Happy New Year, to you, too!  Cool cartoon … is that the Portland skyline?  But I hope that I’ll do a bit better than only getting the “love, peace, joy and success” that I so richly deserve.  Because if ‘m only going to get what I deserve, I’ll be in dire straits.

I’ve decided to do a Community Service Message this morning: More Than You Ever Wanted to Know About Hangovers – And Also Ways to Help “Cure” It

Are you paying the price for too much New Year’s celebration this morning?  Rest assured, you’ve got LOTS of company.  So why do folks get hangovers – and more importantly, is there anything that will really help “cure” it?

Probably the main culprit in hangovers is the fact that alcohol halts the pituitary’s production of Vasopressin (aka, antidiuretic hormone, ADH), and this leads to an inordinate amount of urination with subsequent loss of fluids, along with accompanying electrolytes.

In fact this loss of fluids is what causes headaches: in an attempt to rehydrate itself, your body’s organs will “steal” water from your brain, which leads to a decrease in its size resulting in a tugging on the membranes that connect it to the skull, which produces your headache.

Along with the loss of water from frequent urination, you’ll also lose electrolytes – like sodium and potassium.  Since these electrolytes are necessary for proper nerve and muscle function, with their loss comes a sense of fatigue and weakness.

Alcohol is broken down in the liver to acetaldehyde – which is highly toxic.  So to get rid of it, the body uses the enzyme acetaldehyde dehydrogenase and the antioxidant glutathione, which contains high quantities of the amino acid cysteine.  Unfortunately, the liver has a limited supply of glutathione, so the acetaldehyde that accumulates is what causes liver damage.

I bet almost everyone has their own favorite remedy, and I try never to argue with things that work.  But I’ll focus on ones that have some simple, solid science behind them.

So what’s the best thing to do if you celebrated a tad too much?  First and foremost is to drink plenty of water or a sports drink like Gatorade.  Rehydration (or even drinking lots water as a preventative measure BEFORE you go out celebrating) is the key.

Surprisingly a hearty breakfast of eggs, fruit juice and a banana will help you replenish the substrates lost or used up by alcohol.  Eggs are rich in cysteine, an amino acid necessary to replenish your supply of glutathione that was used to detoxify the alcohol.  Fruit juice is a good source of fructose – a simple sugar that hastens the processing of alcohol.  And bananas are loaded with potassium – one of the major electrolytes lost in urine when imbibing.

Of course, some of us don’t even bother going out to celebrate on New Year’s Eve.  After all, who wants to mingle with a bunch of rank amateurs?

    • The best cure for a hangover is not to drink – although I did have two anise-infused martinis at dinner and a glass of champaigne – quite delicious! Watched fireworks from my apt. window as I alternatively watched Placido Domingo singing “Il Postino” an opera that I Te-vo’d (how do you spell that?) – and had a very elegant Eve! No hangover this morning – but I like the idea of your breakfast – and if I keep looking at the clock (a depiction of my brain I think) – I’ll have a hangover in no time!    Happy New Year to all!!!

    • So that is why the drink, prairie oyster, is supposed to be so good in the morning after the night before!  Prairie Oyster — raw egg in a glass of tomatoe juice with tabasco.  Throw in some celery and you’re off to a good start, so I’m told.  I don’t drink normally (I had 1/2 glass of wine all 2011! at a 100th birthday party!) .  Love the graphic!

    • Thanks Nameless!  Indeed it is!  Cool cartoon!  Now, I wonder why I woke up with a hangover when I did not drink a drop.

  4. Same to you Tom. Much peace and many blessings to everyone.

  5. I would add only one word to this, and that is ‘hope’.

    May the New Year

    Bring you all the love,

Peace, joy, hope and success that

    You so richly deserve!

I have enjoyed these brief 5 months with all the PP contributors and of course TomCat!  Thanks everybody for enriching my life and allowing me to play in the sand box with you all!

  6. Happy New Year!  Let’s hope it is a better year for the world and for all of us!
