A New Town in Fitzwalkerstan

A new town had cropped up in the Corporate Dictatorship of Fitzwalkerstan, formerly known as Wisconsin.  It’s purpose is to give Scott Walker the credit he deserves for the policies he has enacted there.

6walkervilleEighty years after Hoovervilles sprung up around the country, and four months after tens of thousands descended on the Wisconsin state capitol, progressives have a new home in what they’re calling Walkerville.

The Madison tent city is named in honor — or, more accurately, in defiance — of Gov. Scott Walker, who became an icon for conservatives and lightning rod for liberals after he pushed through a controversial new collective bargaining law earlier this year.

David Boetcher, one of Walkerville’s coordinators, said the aim is to recapture the spirit of Hoovervilles, the shanty towns that popped up and were named to tweak President Herbert Hoover’s perceived inaction in the Great Depression’s early years. Since Saturday night’s kick-off, about 80 tents have sprung up in and around State Street in Madison, with a handful of people sticking it out throughout but mostly fresh rounds of activists rotating through on a daily basis.

"Just like the original Hoovervilles in the 1930s, we wanted to create that type of atmosphere without being destructive," said Boetcher, a government affairs coordinator for the IBEW union.

Some major differences, of course, are that Walkerville will only be up for two weeks, its participants generally can go home, and it is more of a staged political event… [emphasis added]

Right now, it is a staged political event, both appropriate and worthy of support.  But if Walker and his minions stay in power, Walkervilles will become a most unpleasant reality.

Every Republican in office is one Republican too many!

  1. Better days are definitely coming: in July, Walker and his fascist GOP will lose its senate majority due to recall; in January Walker will be deservedly thrown out of office on his ass; and in November of 2012, the nationally obstructionist GOP will likewise lose its grip on the House and will lose seats in the Senate as well as a number of governorships and statehouses. The era of radical Republicanism is rapidly drawing to a close.NO party representing only goony social conservatives and the very rich deserves the status of a majority party, and THIS time a much-higher and more accurate sample of voters will display what the country REALLY wants!

  2. We can hopefully look forward to better: BUT this is not time to take anything for granted ;Heat has to be kept up–vote is not in– Walker is not yet out , and the Repigs are still doing their damm best to create difficulty.
The Era of Tea baggers needs to be brought to a close– What Jack called “radical Republicanism”– We the people must take control of our country–I do not think it will be easy—

  3. I love that they are doing this! Go Walkersville!

  4. when you have your elections are the repugs going to get away with cheating? it seems to me that the judicial election of posser was an other way to cheat and get away with it. are torn bags of votes going to be accepted? i would have someone investigate the group that allowed these questionable votes to be counted. the repugs know how to blatantly cheat and get away with it. bush cheated and won twice. hope there is a way to vote and not feel that your vote was dismissed or changed.

Here in Oregon, we have vote by mail, so there is a paper record for every vote. In locales that have ES&S or Diebold machines with no paper trails, and where Republicans control the counting, past statistics show an average deviation from exit polls near 5%, always in favor of the Republican. So we need to demand paper trails for all voting and remove Republicans from office.
